Ralph nervously rubbed at his hands, standing in front of Jack's, and his own, apartment building.
Simon walked up, placing a hand on
his shoulder, "You got this, Ralph. I know it.""You're batty," the response was almost mechanical.
"Yeah, yeah. Just remember to think while you're there," Simon was aware that Ralph didn't really think about things when he was anxious.
Ralph nodded and turned his head towards Simon, offering a small smile. Simon returned the favor.
"Best of luck," he said as Ralph typed in the code to enter the doors.
"Thanks, Si. I love you, bud," Ralph replied with a nervous smile.
Simon nodded and walked back to his car.
Finally, Ralph was facing the future on his own. As he walked up the stairs, he thought about what Jack was doing right now. Was he frantically getting ready? Was he becoming frustrated? Did he even remember he was coming?
Ralph shook his head and dismissed the thoughts. Breathing deeply, he finished his last flight of stairs and faced the door of the apartment he knew all too well.
Remember to think, he repeated in his head. The excitement of seeing his boyfriend again started to come to him and he couldn't help but let a small grin sneak through. He bit his lip and knocked on the door.
In a matter of seconds, Jack was standing before him in the door way. He looked nicer than he usually would, wearing a plaid button-up instead of his signature hoodie. His hair was still messy, as always, but that couldn't be helped. Ralph loved it anyway.
"Ralph," Jack breathed out with a smile.
Ralph, in response, began to stifle a laugh.
"What?" Jack snickered.
At last, Ralph let himself explode with emotions and jumped on top of Jack with loud, loving laughter.
"Whoa— hah!" Jack chuckled heartily while he fell to the floor with Ralph on top of him. He kicked the door close as they rolled around each other. Finally, Ralph stopped them and pinned Jack between his arms, leaning over him.
"You're beautiful," he smiled. Jack intertwined his arms behind Ralph's neck and lay them sideways.
"You're so handsome, my pretty boy. My sunshine," he smiled, moving a strand of Ralph's hair behind his ear. Jack let a tear roll down his face and Ralph wiped it away.
"Don't cry," he sniggered.
"How do you expect me not to?"
The boys laughed in pure bliss, intertwined in each other. It really was a case of true love, wasn't it?
After a while of comfortable silence, they decided to move to the couch and watch a movie: for old time's sake. Jack, now wearing his hoodie again, let Ralph, who was wearing his old sweatpants and Jack's t-shirt, wrap his leg and arm around him and Jack had an arm resting on Ralph's back. They lay cozy and quiet under a warm blanket before Ralph spoke up.
His voice was soft, saying, "You know, I didn't think...well, I lost hope for a moment that we would...get back to together."
"Hm? Why's that?" Jack replied, his head turning to look Ralph in the eye.
"I thought that, maybe, you wouldn't be stable enough for a relationship after everything that happened. It was really scary for me, honestly."
Jack thought for a moment, then said, "Well, we're here now, right? No use dwelling on the past."
Ralph chuckled at the small smirk that Jack offered. After a minute, he asked, "You didn't hurt yourself after we talked, right?"
Jack turned his body so he was fully facing Ralph, "No. I promise, I didn't."
"Okay," Ralph breathed out, "I believe you."
Jack smiled and held Ralph in his arms as Ralph nuzzled himself into Jack's chest.
"Don't you think it's funny how us two could ever be in a successful relationship?" Jack snickered.
"I suppose," Ralph rolled his eyes teasingly, then became sincere, "But we learned from each other. We've changed a lot over these past few years. I think it's our love that changed the both of us. Because that's what it does. Love makes you better, love makes you kinder, love makes you complete. Everyone needs some kind of love, y'know?"
Jack gaped, then responded, "Whoa, that was beautiful."
"Thanks," Ralph chuckled.
The pair shared a kiss, and afterwards Jack yawned.
"Are you tired?" Ralph asked.
"No, I just—"
Jack was cut off by another yawn.
"Well, maybe I am a bit tired..."
Ralph chuckled again and stood up, pulling Jack off of the couch with him.
"C'mon, let's just go to bed. I have to shower anyway."
"Okay," Jack agreed.
The pair walked to the bedroom and Jack practically flopped into the bed as Ralph began to take of his shirt.
"Sexy," Jack muttered with a smirk.
Ralph scoffed in mock annoyance and walked into the bathroom, smiling while saying, "Yeah, yeah, whatever."
He could hear Jack's laughing through the bathroom door which was now closed. Sighing contently, Ralph hopped into the shower and let the water douse him as he thought about all the day's events. He thought about how soft Jack's lips were and how safe he felt, once again back in his arms. The blonde smiled and went to wrap his arms around himself when he noticed the spot on his ring finger that was lighter than every other part of his skin.
It was where the promise ring, Jack's promise ring, used to lay. He rubbed at the spot, thinking of what happened the day Jack gave it to him. They had gone on a movie theatre date and then ventured to a park to mess around. At one point, Ralph ended up falling on his back and laughing profusely, but Jack only stared with a smile and pink tinted cheeks. It was then that Ralph teasingly asked if he was okay and Jack fell down next to him. They star gazed with only each other as company for a while until Jack turned to Ralph and pulled out a ring. Ralph remembered turning his head as well and seeing the most beautiful boy holding the most beautiful ring. He remembered what Jack had said, too.
"It's a promise ring. Basically, if you give it to someone, it's like you're pledging your hearts to one another and you're saying you'll always be together, no matter what. So, I mean, if you'd let me, I'd like to pledge my heart to you and you pledge yours to me."
Of course, Ralph accepted. From then on, the ring stayed in the exact spot that he was rubbing his finger on. He snapped out of his thoughts and decided that he had to find that promise ring.
When he finally came out of the bathroom doors, Ralph had accidentally awoken Jack from his sleep.
"Ralphy," Jack whined, very much still sleepy, "Come lay with me."
Ralph snickered and jumped into the bed with Jack. Jack wrapped his arms and legs around Ralph and Ralph nuzzled his head into Jack's neck. He was pulled to sleep by the comforting sound of Jack's heartbeat and his steady breathing.
Maybe the promise ring could wait just a little longer.
