Chapter Three

I felt a numbing pain in my head, followed by a sting on my neck, where I remembered being stung by that thing, whatever it was. The first thing I saw were Clary's green eyes, followed closely by that girl from Pandemonium.

"Who—who are you?" I asked the girl, struggling to sit up. I felt as if I'd been hit by a truck. I noticed I was on a bed I didn't know, in a room I also didn't know.

The girl smiled. "I'm Isabelle. I've never seen Jace so curious about a Mundane!"

"Thank God you're awake!" Clary said with a sigh. "Your mom would kill me if I let you die on my watch."

"Something tells me I almost did. Jace is the guy who rescued us?"

"You mean the hot blond? Yep. That's him." Isabelle smiled.

"All I know is that everything is spinning around me and I can't seem to understand what is going on," I replied with a sigh. "Clary, where are—"

"I don't know about this place either. I asked to stay here with you until you woke up."

The black-haired boy and Jace entered the room. "Mundanes shouldn't be here."

"Yeah, where exactly is here?"

"They are not Mundanes, Alec." So that was his name. Alec.

"How do you know that?"

"Because the seraph blade lit up when they touched it. Isabelle can you—" Isabelle nodded and moved aside, while Jace sat on the bed by my feet. "I'm Jace Wayland."

"I know. I'm—"

"Leah Rollins, we know," Jace turned to Clary. "And we know who Clary is, too."

"I have to report this to the Clave—" Alec started.

"What is the Clave?" Clary asked in confusion.

"You know what? Dial it down a notch." Jace snapped at him, annoyed.

"My brother doesn't have a dial. I love you, Alec. But you have a switch that's always on." Isabelle teased him.

"Would you all give me a minute? Here's a word you never hear me say much, please?"

"What is with you?!" Alec asked angrily.

"I'm not leaving—" Clary started, but was interrupted by Isabelle grabbing them both by their arms.

"Walk with me guys. Help me make some treats." She then left with both of them.

I was completely alone with Jace, which was awkward but at the same time, I felt safe for the first time since this madness started.

"Your wound. It's healed," he cleared his throat, gesturing to my neck.

I took a quick glance at my neck, and widened my eyes at the burned mark on my skin. "What the—did you freaks tattoo me?!"

"We're not freaks. And that's not a tattoo. It's a Rune."

"Is this some kind of Witch Doctor practice cult?"

"No! I'm not a warlock. Or any kind of Downworlder, for that matter—"

"I literally have no idea what you just said."

Jace took a deep breath and stared at me for a moment. "Warlocks, vampires, seelies... All the legends are true. We're Shadowhunters. We protect the human world from the demon world."

"You mean demons like in Supernatural? Actual beings from..." I pointed downwards.

"I don't know what Supernatural is, but yes, as in creatures from other dimensions whose sole purpose is to destroy life itself."
