Denial {Shirbert Fanfiction} {Anne with an E}

Anne's POV

''It's quintessential that this time you play Elaine, Ruby'' I said matter of factly.

''Anne as I told you last time, I'd die of fright, you must play Elaine''

I adore sunny afternoons, the bright sun shines on the lake in just the right spot that makes the name the Lake of Shinning waters ever so fitting.

''Come on Anne before mother catches us again like last time'' Diana hurried.

''If I must'' I said

But I do have a confession, I long to play Elaine. In the books she is described as the most queer soul and I'd die if I could ever reach her levels of beauty, as it is the sad reality that my freckles and awful red hair will never leave me, it's quite nice to imagine a world where I'm beautiful.

I laid on the boat as Diana handed her daisies.

One by one they kissed my brows and said farewell, then I was launched in the lake as the girls laid their heads down in remembrance of loveable Elaine.

As I'm playing Elaine, I mustn't think thoughts that Elaine wouldn't think. So please brain don't think of the beautiful flowers you are holding or how you feel a cold rush through your dress. Wait--

I open my eyes and identify that the boat is in fact sinking.

Oh no no no, I can't die this way, I'm far too young, childhood hasn't even ended yet!

I look around and spot a bridge ahead that I can hang on too before the girls find me and rescue me.

I reach the bridge, with a jump I escape from the boat and hang on for dear life.

As I squint my eyes I see a mysterious boat coming my way and release a sigh of relief. I'm being rescued!

I know I am in the midst of dangers but I can't help but stare at tree ahead, it just looks so awfully wonderful, and it would be so easy to climb and sit on its tall branc-

Oh no

Why?! Out of all the people in Prince Edward Island of course I must look a fool in front of Gilbert Blythe.

Not because I like him or care about his opinion of course, but I just know he's going to bother me with this for the next month.

''Good afternoon Anne'' Gilbert said with a smirk

''Wipe that stupid smirk out of your face and help me on''

He chuckled

I don't get what Ruby sees in him.

''May I ask, why were you hanging on to a bridge'' Gilbert chuckled.

''Well remember the lesson of Elaine, we remembered it and decided it would be utmost fantastic to reenact it.''

''So I saved Anne Shirley Cuthbert'' Gilbert said proudly.

''No the girls are getting help right now and someone would have come eventually. Anyway why are you here'' I ask.

''I had a sense that I would be needed in the lake today'' He said

I rolled my eyes

We reached the shore and I quickly got off the boat

''Thank you Gilbert, even though your help wasn't needed'' I said

''ANNE'' Ruby called as I saw the girls racing towards me along with Matthew and Marilla.

''You had us worried to death!'' Diana said

''We went go get help, oh we were afraid you've drowned''

''Well you needn't to worry my kindred spirits as I am alright''

''Hi G-Gilbert'' Ruby said

''Hello Jane, Ruby, and Diana. Well must be on my way'' Gilbert said as he got on his boat and paddled away.

''Anne, for heavens sake! I told you one day these adventures of yours would get you in to trouble. Come one lets get you home and dried off. Would you girls like to come for some tea?'' Marilla said.

They all nodded

''How nice of Gilbert, to save you'' Diana said with a sly smile

''Don't get your hopes of Diana, he would have saved anyone, and you know it'' I groaned.

''When will you ever stop denying the fact that Gilbert Blythe is head over heels for you Anne''

''When my ugly freckles disappear from my face, I have beautiful golden locks, and I have a pink puffed sleeve dress'' I exclaimed.

Diana rolled her eyes

Oh when will Diana learn that Gilbert and I are just friends. He could never like a girl like me.

We arrived at Green Gables, as we all settled for some for some green tea and began conversing over the most lovely matters, until they brought up the dreadful dance performance.

''Anne what had happened to you?'' Jane asked

''Oh I don't know, its normal for me to take Josie's insults when it's just the classmates but when she said those horrible things in the stage, I just freezed.''

''Lucky that Gilbert was there to snap you out of it'' Diana said taking a sip of tea

''Yes, it was rather chivalrous of Gilbert to help you Anne'' Ruby admired

''Speaking of boys, how's it going with Jerry, Diana?'' I said as the girls giggled.

''I don't know what you're talking about, Anne'' Diana blushed

And as though fate itself had brought upon my wish Jerry opened the door and found himself crowded by the Avonlea school girls.

''Pardon'' Jerry said as he entered

''No sorry necessary Jerry, Diana was just talking about you'' I smirked

''ANNE'' Diana muttered through her teeth

A small giggle escaped from my lips

Jerry's eyes wandered to Diana

''Good evening Diana'' Jerry said with a smile

''Good evening Jerry'' Diana responded rather formerly

''Jerry!'' We heard Matthew call from outside

''I-I must go'' Jerry said with a nod

''Its so frustrating seeing the two of you talk! Just confess your love for each other already!'' I groaned as Jerry left

''Funny, I could say the same thing to you'' Diana said as she took a sip of her tea

I rolled my eyes

''Lets head upstairs girls, after harvest I received ever so many paper! We can write all day long about whatever our imagination wishes!'' I said quickly before any of the girls could understand what that meant.

Poor Ruby would die if she heard about Diana's foolish thoughts about Gilbert and I, how could me Anne Shirley Cuthbert ever develop feelings for my number one school nemesis. Even if he still is my friend, I will NEVER let him get in between me and title of the smartest student and that is a promise.
