I became engulfed in my own thoughts as I was left alone, laying at the ceiling. The slight creak of Josh's bedroom door sounded, I flicked my body upright and gazed heavily at the door- watching it like a hawk. The door swung fully open and Josh peered our of the door frame, he looked at me to see me staring at him and inhaled deeply before emerging from his cave.
He slumped over to the corner of the room and sat next to me, staring blankly at the wall. We stayed in silence for a few minutes before Josh rocked his body back and forth nervously, he turned his head to face mine and licked his dry lips to wet them. "I uh, I um, I'm sorry. Look can we forget I said anything and just move on?" He nervously giggled, looking down at his legs. "I was wondering if you'd like to uh, go on a date... apocalypse style?" He made finger guns at me as a twinkle grew in his eyes.
"Uh yeah, I'd like that." Chuckled lightly in order to ease the nerves, he placed his hand on my leg and smiled gently at me.
"Great, I'll uh pick you up at nine." He got up from the sofa and left the room, waving before he went out of the door.
I dug through my pocket and picked out my phone, the time read 8:00, I kicked the tatty old slipped from my wounded foot and shoved it into the other timberland boot that Josh gave me. I shot up from my seat and dashed as quickly as I could out of the room. It was easier to run now that I had proper footwear on both feet, the wounds still hurt slightly but they were nowhere near as bad as they were before. I alternated between clothing stores and rummaged through the pile of clothes in each store, sloppily putting an outfit together before making my way back to our hangout in order to get ready in time for the date.
I lay out the clothes before me, I had a yellow hoodie with the words "tonight you belong to me" embroidered on the chest, a pair of black ripped jeans and some yellow vans. I threw them on quickly before diving onto the couch, plugging my phone into charge quickly. The time was 8:45 so I had a few minutes spare to relax and wrap my head around viewing Josh as more than a friend. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that I did really like him.
I lay alone and put a dvd into the the tv. I fell deep into the world of Harry Potter when there was a loud knock on the door, I checked the time on my phone, 9:00. I rolled out of the couch and scrambled towards the door, opening it almost as soon as I got there. Josh stood, wearing a black suit and tie, a bouquet of roses tightly grasped in his hands, his shades resting lightly on his face. He handed me the roses and took my hand. "You look great." He gasped.
"I look under-dressed. You look great." I smiled, stepping out of the room, interlocking my arm with his.
He glanced at me. "No, you look great. I look overdressed." He loudly laughed. "Anyways our first stop of the night is outside so let's go. You've got your umbrellas in case it rains yeah?" He looked to see that I'd left the bag at the green room. "No bag? Hang on wait right here, we need your umbrellas." He stretched his fingers out and a look of urgency swiped his face. His footsteps echoed as he sprinted down the hall, they stopped and the door slammed. Seconds later the boy reappeared with an umbrella stuffed in each pocket, a tired look across his face. He walked towards me and took my arm in his own again, we made our way outside as he cleared his throat. "As I was saying before, our first stop is outside so let's go." He laughed, pushing the door open to reveal a sky full of stars and a black car positioned neatly on its own.
"Is that for us." I questioned, looking intently at him.
"It is indeed m'lady." He took my hand and directed me to the car, we got inside and he ripped his shades off. The car started, vibrating as the engine roared, the car moved castle and before I knew it, we were zooming down a desolate highway in the baron lands of California.
The scenery around us was breathtakingly beautiful, the roads surrounding us were decorated in dashings of dust creating perfectly neat and untouched blanket-like roads as the bold light of the moon turned the gigantic mountains to silhouettes. We drove to the top of a small hill, the car slowly stopped and Josh got out of the car. He walked to my side of the car and kindly opened the door for me before taking the roses from my hands and placing them on the backseat of the car.
His hand enclosed mine, he guided me to the trunk of the car where he opened it with care to reveal he'd packed the car with pillows and blankets. A plastic bag sat on top of the setup, inside were a plethora of snacks and candy. "I thought we could sit in the trunk and watch the stars as we ate your favourite foods." His smile glistened in the moonlight, he held my hand and helped me climb into the trunk. His arm snaked around my body as my head fell to rest on his shoulder.
"This is the best apocalypse style date I've ever been on." I nodded.
"Ah you go on apocalypse style dates often then?" He laughed, throwing an m&m into his mouth.
"Obviously, what kind of prude do you take me for?" I laughed, acting offended.
"A prudey prude." He joked, we fell into a comfortable silence, watching the stars twinkle as they illuminated the night sky.
An hour or two had passed, we laughed, cried and opened our hearts to each other. Josh turned to face me with a mischievous look upon his face. "Onto the next stage of our date, get back into the car." He playfully demanded but I obeyed, I placed my body into the car and waited patiently to be taken to our next place.
The roads were completely dark now, I had no idea at all on where we were going but our journey came to a pause when Josh told me he had to get something. He hopped out of the car and ran into the dark, leaving me alone again. But my loneliness was thankfully shattered when he came running back, he threw something into the trunk of the car and we began to drive back to the mall.
He wrapped a blindfold around my head and tools me through our usual route, holding my waist tightly as he navigated me through the windings of the mall. He went into what I'm assuming was the green room and left me alone again.
Minutes had passed and I was told to enter the room, I did so and upon taking my blindfold off, I was met with the biggest surprise.
