"Hey blue, are you recording? You're recording right?" Lance tapped the lions snout gently then a blue light flashed at him, making Lance smile. He then started petting the lion as the mice jumped on to it. "Okay good."
"You knew about this and didn't tell me?" Allura said, placing a hand to her chest. The mice nodded and pointed back to the display screen on an empty wall.
Keith's mouth hung open. Lance knew this would happen? Why didn't he tell anyone?
"Uhm, hey guys! If you're seeing this I'm must've...been hurt or uh, died, haha~" The boy scratched the back of his neck as his smile seemed to falter. "Geez, what did I get myself into? Why did I think this was a good idea? This is embarrassing! Oh quiznack, what if they see this and try to talk to me about it?!" Lance eyes didn't crinkle at the corners like usual as his lips curved upward. "Oh wait, haha~ I forgot."
One of the mice jumped on his head, making him blink for a second before reaching up to scratch his head. "There's no turning back."
He placed the the mouse on his lap before taking a deep breath, looking straight into the camera even though he probably didn't know where it was. And that's when Keith noticed it. The sleeplessness, the paleness, the dimness of his eyes. He looked rough behind his smile.
"I know this is probably cliche, but I want you guys to remember the good times you had with me. But, there's probably not many to remember. I'm the lazy goofball flirt with nothing to prove. But I want you to hear me out, and I don't want you to feel guilty, okay?"
"What is he talking about?" Shiro muttered confused.
"We'll find out in a second," Pidge said, getting comfortable on the ground with a sorrowful Hunk.
"Pidge, I know I'm not as smart as you. You're the genius of the group but...you're like a little sister to me. Remember at the Garrison where I would sneak into your room and we'd have sleepovers? You'd always talked about the quantum energy and the theories of space and time. You'd talk about the secret codes only you and your brother know and the fun times you had with your family. And I'd complain, I'd complain so much about Veronica and her little crappy pranks, the Garrison teachers, and would brag about the girls falling for me even though that was obviously untrue. Haha~"
Keith looked over at Pidge who was silently crying, her eyes wide at the shock that Lance remembered all those little memories.
"Hunk, I remember we used to sneak into the kitchen to steal some twinkies and other stuff to make deserts out of and we'd eat till we got sick. We only got caught once and I remember we had a long lecture from the commander. But that didn't stop us from making our Lank special! You even engineered a robot to keep it nicely frozen!"
"Khe-Yeah. Then it blew up," Hunk murmured softly with a smile.
"I remember how much of a chicken you were and I'm...I'm proud that you don't throw up every time you fly Yellow. You really have come a long way and you really kick butt! Ramming into things and stuff!" Lance jumped up and punched the air, excitedly. "I remember how you almost pooped your pants when we landed on that alien planet to retrieve Yellow! Haha~" The boy gently smiled. "Keep being that big tough softie, Hunk."
"Lance..." Keith looked over to see both Pidge and Hunk crying on each other. Shiro patting their backs.
"And Shiro, I remember how amazing you were at the Garrison. You were a prodigy! I always admired you because you were so cool and manly!" Lance punched his palm, only to yelp and hold his hand as he chuckled nervously. "I didn't believe for a second you died and I'm happy we got to become...friends?" Lance scratched his cheek confused. "I dunno what our relationship is but you kinda remind me of my dad. He's kind and strong like you and never fails to make the best decisions for the family-" He jumped before he gently smiled. "Yeah, family. I know you don't prioritize me or might not even notice me...like you do Keith. But I understand. Keith is a natural, a genius in his own way even though he's annoying and hotheaded and rash at times and I'm....kinda jealous of that..."
"Wait what? I thought you-" Keith's eyes widened as he remembered the conversation the day before. Shiro looked at him, worry and guilt filling his usually playful and serious eyes.
"I see the same potential in him you see and...he's better....everyone is better than me..." Lance crisscrossed his legs and looked down. "Allura is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. She's powerful and smart and nice and she's a princess. Coran is spunky, funny, loyal and nice and smart too. Everyone has their thing. Keith is the pilot, Pidge is the genius, Shiro's the amazing leader, Hunk is the kind mechanic and chief and I'm...average. Quiznack I'm below average! I once set a pot of water on fire!"
"Lance..." Allura reaches out her hand before pulling it back to her chest. Coran was a sniffling mess as Shiro, Hunk and Pidge we're gathered in a group huddle of comfort.
Keith couldn't believe what he was hearing. Was Lance that self conscious of himself? Was he really that insecure enough to the point he knew he would die someday?
"I'm the flirty goofball that everyone thinks is stupid! And you know what!? You're right! Maybe I flirt and joke around with everyone to create an outlet for everyone to lash out! Maybe I am an idiot that's always late because I can't seem to find the motivation to do anything! Maybe I am aware that everyone compares me with Keith! Keith is amazing and so is everyone else! And even though I miss my family so dang much, I'll gladly lay down my life and suffer if it's for you-"
Lance gasped, shocked at his own outburst as much as everyone else. Tears streamed down his tan face as he sat defensively in front of the camera. He quickly wiped away his tears and stood proudly even though he already let his thoughts out of his mouth. He scratched the back of his head with a baffling chuckle.
"Oops~ sorry, haha! Now it's gonna be real awkward if I happen to regain consciousness and you guys saw this!" Lance sat back down, contemplating every word he said before he sternly stared into the camera. "But I mean everyone word of it! I may be-I maybe useless and...and I may be a seventh wheel but I'll still be trying my best. If you-If I do die on the battle field I...please," Lance shoulders started to shake as he looked down, his breaths clearly wavering. "No matter how forgettable I am I just want you to remember me. It doesn't matter how you remember, just please don't forget I lived and existed. I hope I at least brought you a little bit of peace with this video...."
He laughed again and that was the most painful laugh Keith had ever heard come out of someone's mouth.
"Haha~I know I said at the beginning not to feel guilty but knowing you all have great and kind hearts you probably will. Just know I'll be watching out for all of you."
"I love you all. Really." He stood up and his eyes were swollen. Keith never knew how complicated Lance was but, after seeing his face of agony right there and then he could help but tear up. "Blue, stop recording."
He waved bye and the video cut out.
