"I lost my dad. Well maybe you could say he lost me. And to this day I wished I had a family member like you to that would teach me all the thing a girl would need her dad to teach her. I think X is really lucky to have had you. And I'm positive he's forever grateful to share your last name."
She always had a way with words and I found myself back at the funeral home 5 years ago. I quickly snapped out of it when she ran her nails through my hair.
"You okay?" Her head tilted.
"I'm perfect." I have her a faint smile.
"Well old man you might think it's silly but I brought your favorite; scotch and brandy." I could almost hear his laugh.
"Well. Until next time ya old bastard. I love you. Okay? I'll see you soon."
I gave his tombstone a final look. Then lead Kaia and I out of the large field of souls.
We got in my car and I felt kisses all over my face.
"I'm so so proud of you, okay?" She pouted and her eyes glowed.
"Okay princess." I chuckled.
"I'm proud of you too though. You did so good at the cemetery."
"Yeah.... about that. I was really screaming for help on the inside. I really can't take them things, they creepy me out. To think for miles and miles are all these people that belong to someone. And I just..... mhmmmhm." Her reply sent me into a never ending laughter.
When we were kids one Halloween I had scared Kaia in a cemetery so bad she peed herself. We were all on some scavenger hunt and she couldn't find her partner.
"Awe my baby girl." I cooed as I laughed at her.
"It's not funny" She cooed back.
"Thank you for taking me. And for trusting me. It means a lot to me that you took me X. I feel honored." She smiled.
"It's you. The girl I was supposed to bring to him. I can just feel it whenever I'm around you. He would've loved you. And would've told you embarrassing stories about me." I laughed and I started to think of all the thing he could've told her.
"Speaking of embarrassing stories. Do you have any embarrassing baby pictures?" She gave me a sly smirk.
"It's funny you ask that. I took all of the ones I could find when I left home. I know how much you love pictures." Pictures were important to her.
She called them life in pauses. And that our descendants could really enjoy and appreciate them.
I pulled her closer and kissed her forehead. "What do you say we get out of here, have a lazy day and go look at those photos."
Her face lit up with happiness which gave me pure joy. The littlest things made her happy. She appreciated things you wouldn't expect her to.
I started the engine and we made our way back home. School would be starting back this Monday and I was nervous. We'd be seeing Maia for the first time since they fought.
They'd get into little arguments and forget about it two hours later. But this felt a little different. Almost like they'd never come back from it.
