Alec's POV

Alec opened his eyes to find himself lying in a patch of grass. Magnus's jacket was on the grass next to him. He sat up quickly.

He could have sworn they had been by that river. He scanned his surroundings.

Grass, grass, a few rocks, and more grass. Oh god. Where's Magnus?

"Magnus!" Alec began to panic. There were leaves wrapped around his ankle and wrist, and surprisingly, they both hurt a lot less than yesterday. "Magnus! Magnus where are you?!"

"It's no use,"

Alec jumped, whirling around a little too quickly. He winced. A short guy with a long white beard and no hair on the top his head stood in front of him.

"I've been here for years. There's no way out. I'm lucky to even be alive."

"What? What do you mean? Who are you?"

"So many questions. I'm Ellis, but my everyone calls me El. And you are?"

"Alec."

"A Shadowhunter?"

Alec was taken aback by El's statement until he rolled up his shirt sleeve, revealing the Angelic Rune on his forearm.

"Ellis." Alec thought about it for a moment. A Shadowhunter named Ellis went missing years ago, and had been pronounced dead.

"Which Institute are you from?"

"New York," Alec replied. He was still deciding if he should trust this guy.

"Very interesting," Ellis said, studying Alec with his eyes. "You seem young. How did you get here?"

"You missed a lot."

"Like what?"

Alec started to explain how Valentine came back, all about the Mortal Cup, Jocelyn Fairchild and Clary, the Mortal Sword, the Angel Raziel, Clary using the wish, and killing Valentine. He left out a lot of things, like the fact he was Head of the Institute and he had a boyfriend, and the whole 'I died and came back to life' thing.

"That still doesn't explain how you got here."

"Got caught in the waves. I washed up on the beach. With a warlock, Magnus Bane. And I really need to find him."

Ellis smiled. "This Magnus person must be pretty special to you,"

"Uh-huh,"

"Well, you'll probably never find him. I've been looking for my sister for years. I never found her until she turned up dead."

Alec looked at the man. "Dead?"

"All sorts of stuff happens on this island. Once you get caught in this magical labyrinth, there is no turning back. We could be walking through this field of grass and in a few seconds, we could be in a desert.

Suddenly, a scream echoed through the field.

Alec's stomach dropped. "Magnus!"

"Alec! Alec please! Help!" He screamed again.

Alec started running toward the sound, ignoring the protest of Ellis, who was chasing after him.

"Magnus!"

"Alexander!" Magnus yelled, screaming in pain. Then it was quite.

"Magnus?" Alec screamed. "Magnus, where are you?!" Alec was shaking.

Ellis was saying something to him, but he couldn't hear him. His ears were ringing. He kept running, screaming Magnus's name.

Ellis finally grabbed his arm, forcing him to stop. He had a strong grip for such a small and skinny guy.

"You need to stop running on that ankle. You're going to make it worse."

"Who gives a fuck about my ankle?!" Alec yelled at him, his hazel eyes filling with tears. "I have to find Magnus!"

Alec tried to pull away from him, but Ellis just gripped his arm tighter. "It wasn't Magnus."

"What?"

"What you heard, that wasn't Magnus. The island plays tricks on you. Most people go insane. You can't let that happen to you, okay? Just try to calm down."

Alec stopped fighting him, standing still. He reached up and wiped the tears from his eyes.

"You promise?"

"I promise." Ellis let go of his arm. "Now, I don't have a stele, but I did work in the medical field for a few years." He said, taking Alec's broken wrist into his hand, being gentle as possible, just like Magnus had.

"Let's get you fixed up, and if you want, we can try to find your friend."

Alec nodded. Ellis had him sit on the ground, propping his ankle on a rock, placing Magnus's jacket under it.

"Let's get to work."

Magnus's POV

"Alexander!" He cried.

Every time. Every single time. Just as he reached him, Alec would disappear.

He appeared again, farther away than the last time. This time, Alec's forehead was bleeding, and he fell to the ground.

Magnus started running to him, his legs getting tired from the previous attempts. But Magnus just wanted to know he was okay. He didn't know if this was the real Alexander or not, but just in case he was, Magnus had to get to him.

"Magnus..." He whispered.

Magnus finally reached him, noticing that his stomach was also covered in blood. "It's okay, Alexander, I'm here." Magnus reached out to touch him, to see if he was real. For the first time since he woke up in this desert, his hand did not go through him. He was real.

"Magnus, it hurts."

"I know, Alexander, I know. Just breathe."

Alec nodded slightly, closing his eyes. Magnus didn't know what to do. Without his magic, without a stele, without any medical supplies, what could he do?

A wave of fear washed over him. No. I can't lose him. Not again.

But Alec was no longer breathing. His body faded to dust.

It wasn't really him. Magnus sighed in relief.

He stood up and kept walking through the desert. All around him the sand shimmered, and then he was, once again, on the beach. Magnus shook his head, rubbing his eyes. How the hell did that happen?

Must have been the dehydration getting to his head.

Behind him, there was a large field of grass. Two people stood in the center of it, but they were too far away for Magnus to see who they were. He sighed, sitting down in the sand, watching the waves. He'd deal with that tomorrow.

The sun was setting over the horizon, the sky a brilliant canvas of reds, pinks, and oranges, reflecting off of the water, which was rather calm as you looked farther out. It was beautiful.
