CHAPTER FIFTY SIX stairway to heaven. season five, episode thirteen.
CASSIE'S INTERNS STOOD OUTSIDE OF AN ON CALL ROOM, IMPATIENTLY WAITING FOR THE DOOR TO BE OPENED. Rue jiggled the handle for the millionth time, rolling her eyes in annoyance as she turned to Ryan and Ollie, both of whom were exhausted and just wanted a place to sleep.
"I hate people," she grumbled, kicking the door once for good measure. "I'm tired."
Ollie nodded in agreement, resting his head on his boyfriend's shoulder as he let out a yawn. "Why is it even locked?"
"Why do you think, babe?" Ryan snorted, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. Seconds later, loud moans could be heard through the thick walls, making all three of them cringe. "Case in point—"
"I'm sick of this!" Rue groaned, kicking the door once again as she raised her voice to a shout. "Go fuck somewhere else, assholes!"
All of a sudden, the pleasured moans turned into a scream of pain that echoed throughout the hallways, followed by the sound of a panicked female voice. "OH MY GOD?!"
The interns froze in place, not moving a muscle as they checked to see if anyone else heard.
"Should we, you know, go in there?" Ryan wondered aloud, cringing as another shout of agony ripped through the walls. "It kinda sounds like someone's dying." Rue shook her head, reaching down and paging her resident instead.
"I paged Dr. Harper," she informed them. "She'll know what to—" The intern was cut off by the sound of a pager buzzing from inside of the on call room. "—do."
Ollie looked between them with a questioning look. "Let's run away and pretend we were never here?"
"I'm in."
"Sounds good to me."

Cassie stood in the center of the on call room, her hand covering her mouth as she watched her boyfriend, naked and writhing in pain on the mattress. "Oh my god?!"
Mark's face was scrunched up in excruciating pain, his face beat red as he screamed. "Ah!"
"Oh my god!" Cassie shouted for what seemed like the hundredth time, staring down at Mark's injury in revulsion. "Are you okay?!"
