The ride back home had been extraordinarily quiet. An overwhelming, harsh silence that weighed on both of them.
Becoming muggles. Renouncing to magic. That was the only way to break the curse.
The old-lady, Lily (much to their surprise, that was her name) had given them the book where there were all the details about the curse and the recipe to prepare the potion to become muggles.
Nevertheless, before starting to gather the ingredients, the thing was: did they want to become ones? To give up on their magic powers? Abandon Hogwarts?
The thought that had invaded Scorpius' mind was that Albus presumably didn't want to.
I mean, he already feels like a delusion for his father because he has been sorted in Slytherin and although Harry has approved our relationship, I'm still a Malfoy, and my dad has... broken Harry's heart. So why would he ever accept his son becoming a muggle just to be with me?
Albus doesn't want to fail his father once more. Harry Potter's son won't become a muggle just to be with Draco Malfoy's.
So the blond's thoughts were certain that Albus didn't want to drink the potion. He didn't know what they were going to do, maybe separating or probably just waiting until another fruitless possession to kill the other would have arrived.
On the other hand, Albus was thinking the same, but not about him. About his lovely and dorky Scorpius, who was looking outside the train window with his beautiful, almost breathtaking, grey eyes.
Why would he ever renounce to magic just to be with me? He loves it so much. He loves learning new spells, new potions. He loves Hogwarts because it's the only place where he managed to sleep when he still lived in the Malfoy Manor. My geek, nerd, lovely Scorpius, would never renounce to magic just to be with me. Magic is his everything.
So, in the end, they were both thinking the same exact thing: would he abandon everything just to be with me?
But how could one of them ask the other? Words wouldn't have managed to express the implications of the choice. They would have underestimated the love that they felt for each other.
Then Scorpius turned his head to him, not looking at the green trees and almost desert countryside anymore.
Scorpius turned his head to him and since Albus was already looking at him, their eyes immediately met.
That's when they understood. They understood that they both would have renounced to magic if that meant breaking the curse and being with the other safe and sound.
Albus smiled, a little, small, soft smile, their eyes still locked. In that precise moment, Scorpius knew that they were making the right choice because life wasn't life without Albus and their love was more powerful than everything they had to go through.
«It's going to be hard,» Albus said suddenly, still looking into the other eyes.
Scorpius looked so beautiful, breathtaking, almost a painful, disarming beauty.
No, no more pain for Scorpius. No more pain for both of them. No more pain for anybody.
«Brewing the potion?» the blond asked.
«No, telling our parents» the shorter replied.
The train whistled all of a sudden, interrupting their moment, so they looked outside the window together to see where they had arrived.
Kings' cross. London.
The taller looked at Albus again, «If they don't kill us for having disappeared for six months without any letter before» and then he started gathering their bags in the compartment.
