POV : Ray
It was dark. The chilling air crept down my neck like a shiver. Stakes were high and one of us was on death row. Lightning flashed! How very spooky and mysterious for such an event. And then, the unspeakable! Thunder CLAPS!
" Gotcha! "
I cocked a brow at the blonde girl. I had successfully won after many checker tournaments. She, of course, shook her head in defeat. I patted her on the head. We continued to talk about scientific things as we played. I nodded along with practically everything she said. Of course, Anna was (almost) always right. Especially when it came to things like medical things. I always found it so intriguing to talk to her about, well, her strong suits. On the daily, she's pretty calm and relaxed; but when I bring up a debate: she is ready to speak her mind.
I guess that's why I got close to her.
Norman was rarely around to talk to. Outside of school, Norman would usually be doing his homework or trying to find clues that lead to Emma. I knew he was determined, but I felt bad he never got a break. So, in turn, I made friends with Anna to keep my space.
" you're too good, how do you always manage to be one step ahead? "
She said, letting out a small laugh afterwards. I could see her face turn a little red. I crossed my arms, being a little dramatic and replied;
" Well, I guess it's just a natural gift. Just like how you are so smart- uh..."
We both turned away a bit. Why did I say that? It kind of sounded like I was... interested (which I am not.) Even if I was, (which I am not.) she has a boyfriend. I couldn't possibly risk our friendship for some silly crush (which I do not have.)
" I realize now that even if I cannot be as smart as you, Norman or even Emma; I have to try doing my best at what I am good at. That just so happens to be something we both enjoy!"
I looked back at her. She was... smiling. Her words were always so touching and meaningful. However, I couldn't help but let out a chuckle. Of course, she got flustered again.
" oh, did I say something wrong? I'm so sorry I didn't- "
I gently touched her shoulder and gave her a crooked smile, holding her back from saying any more.
" No, it's not that. I'm just glad you are so optimistic about things. You remind me of- well, unlike myself, I tend to be a bit more of a pessimist. "
She opened her mouth to speak, but a gush of queasiness fell over my body. I saw Norman and Emma fidget a bit in their seats, then get up to go to talk. Hands were motioning to the back of the plane, and soon, they were off.
Were they?- no. No, they were not. God knows the two of them are too innocent for things like... like that. So, I inferred had to be wrong. In the brief moment Norman walked passed me, our eyes locked. I could tell he was worried. But why? Why now of all times? We had just gotten our beloved Emma back, and chaos was already ensuing? I looked down at my hands. I began to contemplate.
" Ray, are you alright? "
I jumped a bit in my seat as her hand grazed my shoulder. I nodded quickly and proceeded to take off my seatbelt. She seemed taken aback by my actions. Of course she did. She could have had a clue as to why I was so... unorthodox.
