The Apex Games.
The Apex Games were notoriously known throughout the galaxy. The universe, even. A bloodbath of a sport with millions of viewers waiting to see who would come out on top. The game had gone through numerous legends throughout the years. There was always a new challenger to make up for those who didn't make the cut.
Assassinations, retirement — the usual nowadays.
The games were something you hardly ever paid any mind to, ever since your childhood friend, Octavio Silva, had left to pursue his adrenaline junkie dreams. Now, you couldn't kick yourself sideways for this; you were very happy he could find something to crave his addiction for that rush he constantly goes on about!

...
"Octavio, you can't be serious! The Apex Games? Are you out of your mind!?"
The speed demon let out a groan of slight frustration, his eyes reflecting the brilliant rays of the sun as he dipped his head backwards to exaggerate his annoyance with this conversation. The two of you had been taking a simple walk around your development, something you often did together to get in your daily workouts. They were usually something you looked forward to; until Octavio sat on a nearby bench and patted the spot next to him. Everything went downhill from there.
"Common, amiga! What's the big deal? It's not like it's an actual death sentence or anything! It'll be a ton of fun, and you know how quick I am on my feet! They won't be able to lay a finger on me! I'm lo mejor de lo mejor!" He would bend back to normal and turn his head to face you, his eyes drooping with dread. You only squinted your eyes at him, your anger slowly yet surely making your blood pressure rise.
"What, blowing your damned legs off wasn't enough for you? Now you have to go off to join a...a damned blood sport!?" You didn't mean to raise your voice at him, being as soft spoken as you naturally were. It made you flinch a bit, but he seemed unfazed.
"Sí! That's exactly what I'm going to do, te guste o no!"
The two of you sat in silence then. It enveloped the two of you so quickly; it was almost overwhelming. The tenseness of the atmosphere weighed down on the both of you, though it didn't seem that way for him. For Octavio Silva; the adrenaline junkie. The speed demon. Your best friend.
"I..." You turned away from him and let out a soft sigh. With this foreign silence between the two of you becoming too much for you to handle, you stood up, unable to bring your eyes to meet his. "I hope you've finally found what you've been looking for, Octavio, but this isn't something I can support." And with that, you walked away. It would be the last time you'd see him for years to come.

...Scratch away everything from before. You were always kicking yourself sideways for the way things ended between the two of you. The two of you had known each other...practically all your life. You went to him for everything, and he with you. You were his cheerleader for everything he did, his support line, his best friend. And he to you. However, when it came to the Apex Games, that all drastically changed.
Octavio left the day after your altercation. No texts, no calls...nothing. You hadn't heard from him in 3 years, at this point. It always rained down on you, every day — every waking moment of your life. The only time you ever got to see him was when you flipped the station to those damned games... The Apex Games. It was always refreshing to see him laughing away at the rush. Whether he was the champion or not, he was always having a blast. It made you smile, but you could never bring yourself to watch the entirety of the games.
