“Miss Kaliah!” George said, emerging from the open doors of his manor. You and Elijah followed after her as she walked towards him, holding the ends of her gown up.
“Oh, hello George! It’s so nice to see you again! It’s been too long!” Kaliah said, wrapping her arms around the man. “How are your boys doing? Lord knows how hard it is to raise two bullheaded boys alone!”
“Jonathan and Dio are doing just fine. Thankfully, they’ve gotten over their phase of quarrels. It amazes me how well they get along together now, but I’m very happy they’ve accepted each other,” He said. You frowned behind your face covering. “Oh, are these guests of yours?”
Kaliah turned back to you and Elijah, you stood behind her with your hands behind your back respectfully. “Quite the opposite actually,” She sighed. “They’re bodyguards my butler has hired. I’ve been getting very nasty threats lately. I was advised not to come tonight, but I just couldn’t resist! So, they came along. I hope you don’t mind them,”
“Of course not! They’re here for your protection, aren’t they? Your safety is what matters the most!” George said. “Now, why don’t you come inside?”
“Thank you,” Kaliah said, curtseying. She then snapped as she walked forward, and you and Elijah trailed after her. Your fingers twitched at your sides as you looked around the large house, and even though there was a huge amount of people, it still seemed bigger. You looked over to the chair you sat in when you yelled at Jonathan three years ago. Guilt swirled inside of you. You averted your eyes quickly.
“Vitz, would you mind going to get me something to drink?” Kaliah asked, turning to Elijah as she used his alias. He gave a short nod, then broke away towards the long table full of refreshments. You walked beside Kaliah as she departed from George and moved about the room. “Do you know your way?”
You nodded. Before she could say anything else, two figures approached both of you. Two...familiar figures.
“You must be Jonathan and Dio!” Kaliah exclaimed. “Look at how grown both of you have gotten! You both must be so popular with the ladies!” She looked towards you and grinned devilishly.
You glared at her beneath the shadow of your hood. Silently growing angry, your fingers twitched towards your blade but were stopped when a figure knocked into you. Elijah walked past and handed a glass to Kaliah.
“Oh, thank you, Vitz!” She said, happily taking the wine glass.
“Did you say Vex?” Jonathan asked suddenly, confusion washing over his face. You tensed up.
“You must have heard me wrong,” Kaliah said, frowning as she cupped her hands around her glass. “His name is Vitz.”
“Oh, I’m terribly sorry!” Jonathan said, turning to look at the tall boy beside you. His eyebrows were furrowed and he had an apologetic expression.
Kaliah laughed. “It’s quite alright! Some things go misheard all the time!”
“Please excuse me if this is rude, Miss Kaliah, but who are these two men? They’re dressed quite oddly,” Dio said. His eyes flicked to you, and you could have sworn he met your gaze, even if he couldn’t see your face.
“Bodyguards,” Kaliah sighed, shaking her head. “Many people are targeting me for my money. Can you believe that? People would kill over a single pound. It’s disgraceful!”
Elijah grabbed your wrist before you could touch the handle of your dagger.
“I apologize,” Dio said, smiling. “I didn’t know.”
“It’s not your fault. As you said, you didn’t know,” Kaliah smiled. “If you would excuse us,”
“Of course. Sorry for interrupting,” Jonathan said, smiling sweetly. Your stomach churned with anxiety. “Come on, Dio.”
“Go, now,” Kaliah said in a hushed voice. You and Elijah nodded and split in opposite directions. Thanks to the dark clothing that matched the walls of the manor, it was easy for you to blend in with the shadows. Your steps became silent as you slipped away from the party, the sounds of loud laughter and voices slowly dying out behind you. No one was in the hall, and it wasn’t long after that Elijah came to crouch beside you.
“The office is down the hall more,” You said.
“Let’s hurry then, while no one is around,” He muttered, looking around before running down the hall silently. You ran after him, remembering to pace yourself as you looked around once more.
“Here,” You said, stopping in front of a set of large double doors. You reached out and grabbed the handle, slowly turning it and gently pushed the door, only for it to remain closed. “It’s locked.”
“Move aside, and watch the master,” Elijah said, crouching in front of the door. He reached into his pocket and panic washed over his face. He snapped his gaze up to you, but you were already looking around while holding a lockpick and your dagger to him. He sighed in relief and took it.
“The master huh?” You asked. Elijah glared up at you before he jammed the lockpick into the lock and mimicked your voice childishly.
“I’m better at it than you,” He spat. Footsteps echoed down the hall.
“Shut up,”
“No, you’re just angry that I’m bet-”
“Eli, shut your trap! Someone’s coming!” You whispered, making his hands fly from the lock with the lockpick and your dagger in one hand. He grabbed you and threw open the door, rushing inside. Off to the side was a small closet that he shoved you inside of and came in behind you. The crawl space was crammed, so your body was pressed against his, sandwiched between him and the wall. His arms rested beside your head as he shielded your body from view. The door to the study opened, and the dim light of a candle shone under the door. More lights were lit up as the person used the flame from their candle to light the other candles. Your mixed breathing became silent and both you and Elijah’s gazes were trained at the bottom of the closet door to watch the shadows pass under the light.
“Where the hell does that old bastard keep it?” Someone murmured to themselves. The voice echoed in your mind. You recognized it almost instantly. Elijah looked at you in confusion, a look that was also plastered across your face.
What was Dio searching for his father’s office for? Especially while he was a host of the party? It spiked your interest, but you hadn’t dared to mutter a word. The sound of a chair scratching against the wood had your attention turning to the door. He sat down.
Elijah turned to look at you with exasperation. His head dropped into your shoulder.
“You don’t have to hide,” Dio said, making both of you tense. “I know you’re in there,”
“Vex.”
