“Where are you leading me?” Dio questioned as you drug him through an alleyway, towards James’ apartment. “At least take me to dinner first,”

You glared at him harshly over your shoulder, making him laugh. “Shut up, and stay behind me. And be nice,” You emphasized the last words, making your point clear to him.

“Alright,” He said. You glared at him one more time before pushing open the door to the building. “Do you want help?” He asked as you headed for the stairs.

“No, and don’t you dare even think of picking me up either,” You warned, stepping up the stairs. The bandages on your leg were tight, and it ached and burned with every step. Dio had scolded you for about ten solid minutes after seeing it, bellyaching at you for not being more careful and cautious when you’d reopened the wound. When you got to the top of the stairs, Dio forced you to wait before continuing on.

“You’ll bust the sutures right out of your skin. Again,” He added, huffing at you. You waved a dismissive hand at him and limped down the hall.

“I’ll be fine,” You sighed.

“You say that, but are you really?” Dio hummed. You shrugged as an answer and opened the door to the apartment.

“Who’s just come through the door?” Harry asked. You grinned and poked your head around the corner and into the kitchen.

“Y/n!” Samantha exclaimed, jumping from her seat. She ran towards you and jumped in your arms, making you grunt in surprise, but hold her nonetheless.

“You’ve been gone for so long!” Helen exclaimed. “We heard about Elijah from one of the gals you work with,”

“Papa went to file a report, but they said you were probably dead as well! But I knew you weren’t!” Michael said happily, hugging your leg. You winced.

“Off her! All of you! Can’t you see she’s hurting?” Harry ordered, plucking the blonde from your arms and the brunette from your legs. Harry glanced behind you and noticed Dio standing there. “Friend of yours?” He asked, placing the two kids back in their seats to finish their homework. He then pulled out a chair and motioned for you to sit down.

“Yeah. He’s the one who’s been helping me,” You said, sitting down. Harry pulled another chair up and motioned to Dio.

“I’ll stand,” He said, leaning against the wall behind you.

“Where’s James?” You asked.

“He’s running to get some thread for Helen’s dress I do believe,” Harry said. “No, Micheal don’t put that pencil in your mouth,”

“I’m sorry I left for so long,” You said.

“It’s alright, I can handle things here,” Harry smiled at you, shaggy hair falling in front of his eyes. “Besides, it’s not your fault that you were attacked and hurt. And you,” Harry turned his attention to Dio, who stiffened slightly. “Thank you,”

Dio raised an eyebrow. “For?”

“Taking care of Y/n,” He said, glancing at you as you leaned across the table to snatch the pencil from Michael and bop his nose with it. “If they didn’t have people like you to look after them, they’d probably die somewhere in an alley,”

“I would not,” You defended. “I can take care of myself.”

“Y/n, you literally have had the bones in your wrists and hands shattered, twice, and you’ve come home with more stab wounds than I can remember,” Harry said, looking as if you were an alien.

“That’s nothing,” You mumbled. Everyone looked at you as if you’d said something completely stupid.

The front door opened. “I’m back!” James called.

“Papa, hurry! Y/n’s come back!” Michael exclaimed. There was a pause before a rush of footsteps came, and James entered the room.

“Thank God,” He said, moving to you quickly. “Are you all right? I heard about the carriage accident and Kaliah’s death.”

“Then you’ve heard about Elijah as well? He hasn’t shown up here has he?” You asked, standing up. James noticed the way you extended your leg out.

“No, he hasn’t. What happened to you?” He asked.

“Nothing. It’s just a scratch,” You said, brushing him off. You then handed him a bag of pounds. “Here, this is yours.”

“What? No, Y/n-”

“Take it, James,” You said. “I have to be off again. I’m sorry I can’t stay longer, but I only need a change of clothes.”

James sighed heavily, knowing that you had gotten yourself into more trouble. “Alright. Helen, go with Y/n and help them, please,”

“Okay,” The girl said, following after you as you walked down the hall to the room.

“What happened to your leg?” Helen asked, folding up your old clothes and draping them over her arm. “Those bandages look fresh.”

“It was a cut,” You said. “And they were just changed.”

“That man that came with you,” Helen said, making you look over at her as you slipped the gray long sleeve over your head.

“Yes, what about him?” You asked, slipping your legs through the pants, careful to mind your wound. These pants had an elastic in them at the waist.

“He’s the man who Elijah told us to stay away from,” She replied, glancing at the door. “Is he bad?”

“No, he’s helped me and saved me more times than I can count. You shouldn’t listen to anything Elijah has to say. And I don’t want any of you around him. If you see him in the street, turn and run the other way,” You mumbled, brushing your hair out.

Helen came behind you and fixed your shirt, tucking it into your waistband. “He’s gone mad, hasn’t he?”

“I don’t know,” You sighed. “I wouldn’t doubt if he did. He was never in his right mind, to begin with.”

“Is he your friend? The man in the kitchen I mean,” Helen asked, fetching your cloak from the bed.

“I suppose,”

“Do you like him?”

“What do you mean?” You looked over at her as she shrugged.

“He just looks like a nice looking man,”

“Are...are you trying to marry me off?” You laughed.

“Well, if you aren’t going to take him-”

“You are way too young, miss,” You said, hooking your arm around her neck as you ruffled her hair. “Besides, Brando isn’t up for grabs,”

“Such a shame,” She sighed, handing you your coat. “He’s a nice sight to gaze at, that’s for sure.”

“You watch too many of the women in the street,” You said, walking down the hall as you swung your cloak over your shoulders and clasped it at your neck.

“I have to learn somehow,” She giggled, making you shake your head.

“Brando, are you ready?” You asked. “These children are driving me mad-” You stopped in the hall, making Helen run into your back. She peered around you, and burst into laughter, the sound mixing in with your own.

Dio was sitting in one of the chairs, Samantha seated behind him as she put various clips into his hair. Small tufts of his blonde strands were tied off into small sections, and the poor man looked so helpless. He looked up at you, eyes twitching in annoyance.

“They’re driving you mad?” He hissed through clenched teeth. You covered your mouth and laughed harder.

“Now he really is a pretty sight to look at, ain’t he?”
