The breeze was cold as I walked outside making my cheeks turn a soft pink, the snow crunched under my feet.
The first school week had passed since the new year and today was my first shift back at Luke's.
"Morning." I chimed walking into the diner.
"Matilda, go get started on a new batch of coffee." Luke said popping up from begins the counter.
"What are you doing?" I asked walking up to him.
"Fixing stuff." He huffed laying back on the floor.
"What stuff?" I asked.
"Shelf stuff." He said leaning under the counter with a hammer in his hand.
"Aha." I answered before taking off my jacket and grabbing a pen and paper.
"Gonna go take some orders." I said leaning back over the counter to look at Luke.
He nodded before banging another nail into the back of the counter.
I heard the loud voices of Rory and Lorelai walk into the diner and sit down at a table behind me.
I took a deep breath before turning around and going to take their orders.
Me and Rory still hadn't spoken after our fight and the house felt quiet without us together. I did miss being her friend but it was her time to step up and take responsibility for her actions.
"Hey, what can I get you guys?" I said putting in a fake smile for Lorelai.
Lorelai hadn't figured out the our fight was that meaningful and big so she thought that it had passed a while ago.
"Two coffees, scrambled eggs with cheddar, no pepper and french toast." She said before u write it all down.
"Be back in a bit." I smiled softly before going to the kitchen to give Caesar the orders.
"Matilda." I heard Luke say from behind me.
"Yep?"
"There's new stock in the storage, go unpack it."
I headed right to the storage room and grabbed the box cutter. The boxes were filled with coffee beans, pickle jars, different kinds of jams and ice cream that I shoved straight in the freezer.
"Hey Luke?" I yelled from the storage room.
"What?" He yelled back.
"Where's Jess?" I asked.
"I have no idea." He replied.
After my shift I headed to the bookstore. I had been saving up my money for a book shopping spree.
"Hey Andrew." I smiled.
"Matilda, nice to see you. There's new shipment in the back." He said pointing to the back right corner of the store.
I walked to the back of the shop and started looking through all the new books and reading all the descriptions.
I chose 2 books that I liked the most and paid for them.
I walked home as it was already starting to get dark outside. The streets were quiet with no one in sight making me feel a bit uneasy until I remembered that its stars hollow, the safest town on earth.
I started to hear footsteps behind me and glanced over my shoulder seeing a man with a hood on.
I started to walk faster as the footsteps quickened behind me.
"Hey!" The voice called out making me stop.
"What do you want?" I huffed turning around.
"Haven't seen you in a while." He smirked walking closer.
"What do you want Liam?" I repeated.
"Still with that boyfriend of yours?" He asked.
"Yes."
"Too bad." He replied raising his eyebrows.
"I don't have time for this." I said turning again and starting to walk away.
"Let me walk you home." He said jogging up to me.
"No, thanks." I said putting my hood up and shoving my hands in my pockets.
"You really don't like me, do you?" He grinned.
"No I don't." I scoffed.
"I can change that." He said.
"Bye Liam." I said before running off towards home.
I took a deep breath as I entered the house knowing that Rory was there.
I was right, I saw her and Dean sitting on the couch watching a movie. I quietly creeped to the kitchen and put a bag of popcorn in the microwave.
After grabbing the bag I hurried upstairs as the started to kiss so they wouldn't notice me. I changed into my pjs and washed my face before braiding my hair and getting into bed.
I grabbed one of my new books and started to read before drifting off to sleep.
"Matilda!" Yelled Lorelai startling me awake.
"Jeez, I was asleep." I groaned rubbing my eyes.
"There was a fire at the inn." She said in a rush.
I immediately hopped out of bed and changed into some blue jeans, a dark blue hoodie and grabbed my book.
I quickly brushed my teeth and splashed my face with water before throwing my hair up in a messy bun and rushing down the stairs.
I slipped my feet into my uggs and grabbed my jacket as me, Lorelai and Rory rushed out the door and towards the inn.
"Michelle, is everyone okay?" Asked Lorelai the second we arrived at the scene.
"Yes, I did a headcount." He replied in his usual salty tone.
"What time is it?" I asked butting into the conversation.
"Five forty five." Replied Michelle glancing at his watch.
"Matilda gather up the children and try to entertain them." Lorelai sighed giving me a small smile.
I nodded even though I had no idea how to entertain kids but I was going to try. I gathered up the 7 kids and led them to the town square where we played tag till shx thirty.
"I'm tired, you guys tired?" I said leaning against the gazebo trying to catch my breath.
"No." Replied the kids in unison before they kept running around.
They all kept playing as I sat on the bench observing them all. I didn't know how many kids I wanted in the future, I just knew that I wanted them. I wasn't going to raise them like my parents, I was going to be kind and give them all the love and attention in the world.
"Matilda." Said a little girl startling me.
"Hey, what's your name?" I said as she sat next to me.
"Lucy." She smiled lightly. She had black hair and huge green eyes that stared up at me.
"Why aren't you playing with the other kids?" I asked.
"I want to talk to you instead." She said bluntly making me smile.
"Well Lucy, what do you like to do?" I asked.
"I like to paint and I just learnt how to read." She said proud of her accomplishments.
"What do you like to paint?"
"I paint birds, my friends and rainbows." She said with a sweet smile on her face.
"Wow that's beautiful." I said.
"What's your hobby?" She asked.
"I'm a ballet dancer." I said seeing her eyes lit up.
"Really?" She asked with an excited expression.
"Yeah, I twirl and jump in sparkly tutus." I said making her even more excited.
"Like this?" She asked as she got off the bench and started to twirl around.
"Exactly like that." I chuckled getting up and joining her. We spun and jumped around acting like we were ballerina princesses.
"I see you've replaced me." I heard the husky voice behind me say.
"Long time no see stranger." I smiled turning around. To tell the truth we saw the day before yesterday.
"Who's that?" Asked Lucy with a confused look on her face.
"This is my..... friend, Jess." I smiled earning a glance from Jess.
"Jess this is Lucy." I said introducing him to the little girl.
"I like your jacket." She smiled looking at Jess' leather jacket.
"Thanks, I like your pig tails." He said pointing at her hair making her smile.
She tugged on my jacket sleeve making me crouch down to her level.
"He's cute." She giggled.
"Super cute." I replied making Jess blush.
