This was a big day.
This would be the day.
The day that (Y/N) made his trip.
"It'll be fun!" they said.
"It'll be a great experience!" they said.
"What's the worst that can happen?" they said.
But moving to a country halfway around the world was no small thing.
(Y/N) had gone before. He liked it. It was nice.
But did he like it enough to move there? Not particularly.
Whatever, he had thought. It's temporary. No problem. If I don't like it, I'll leave. Simple as that.
"Big Bubber!"
Well, at least (Y/N) had some company.
"Big Bubber!"
"...what?"
"We're boarding!"
"Oh, already? Cool."
(Y/N) stowed his doubts away in his suitcase, along with his music player and headphones.
"Flight TS806, bound for Chūbu International Airport, is now boarding," a voice was heard over the PA system.
Welp, no going back now.
(Y/N) was conflicted. He wanted the new experience and thought the things he learned would contribute to his overall self.
And then he wanted to stay home. Japan was a big place. Why not just stay home? Nothing bad would happen if he just stayed home.
Come on, man up. Worst case scenario, I don't like it and I move back. Best case scenario, I don't know... I find some really nice friends and some really nice girls, hehe. He suddenly frowned. Unlikely, though. We're talking real life here.
"Sir, are you with this girl?" a boarding attendant asked.
(Y/N) snapped back from his thoughts.
"Hi, um, yes, I am."
"I need your passports, please."
"Right away," (Y/N) said, reaching into his pockets to retrieve their passports.
"(F/N)?"
"That'd be me."
"Ally (L/N)?"
"That'd be her."
"Alright. Have a good flight!" The attendant bid them farewell as she handed (Y/N) the passports back.
"Thanks, you, too," he replied.
A decade and a half on this planet and I still can't stop saying "you, too". Nice.
"Big Bubber! Are you excited?"
"Enough."
"Aww, come on, this is gonna be amazing!" Ally exclaimed, throwing her arms in the air. In doing so, she accidentally let go of the handle of her suitcase, letting it tip over. She managed to catch it before it hit the ground.
"If you say so."
"Hey, where's that optimist?" she asked, peering into (Y/N)'s eyes from a very short distance. "I know it's in there somewhere..."
(Y/N) chuckled. "Yeah, you're right. I should be being more optimistic."
Ally chuckled back. "That's the spirit!"
They shortly reached the plane. (Y/N) performed his common tradition of slapping the outside of the plane before the flight before he entered.
They found their seats and stowed their suitcases above their heads.
"Hello, everyone, this is your pilot speaking. Please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened until we take off. The flight attendants will now give a safety demonstration. Please pay attention."
~ + ~
"We're about to land in Tokoname, Japan. Ensure your seat tables are up and your electronic devices are turned off. Thanks for choosing Air Transie, and I hope you have a good rest of your day."
*bump*...*bump*..*bump*...*ride*
"...huuhh?" (Y/N) rubbed his eyes groggily. The flight from [city of choice] to Tokoname was quite lengthy, during which sleeping was more than natural.
(Y/N) and Ally clapped their hands at the successful landing, although rather quietly since they had both just woken up.
Ally yawned. "That was a short flight!"
"Says the one that slept for basically the whole thing."
"It's not my fault!"
"Then whose is it?"
It was too early in the morning for Ally to fight, so she called it quits there.
*ding*
"You may now get up from your seats."
As he was about to leave, (Y/N) turned around to see Ally barely reaching the overhead compartment. He jokingly sighed as he went back to help her.
"Pasupōto o itadakemasu ka?" ("May I have your passport?") the Japanese customs officer asked (Y/N) and Ally.
(Y/N) nervously blinked. "Uh... Eigo de onegaishimasu?" ("English, please?") (Y/N) nervously laughed.
"Sure. We get a lot of English travellers. May I have your passport, please?"
"Yep, right away," he said, handing the officer their passports.
"(F/N) and Ally (L/N)?"
"Yep."
"Right this way," he handed them back their passports.
"Arigatō gozaimasu!" Ally cheerfully responded.
Taxis... Taxis... Taxis...
"Taxis!" (Y/N) exclaimed, finally finding the 'taxis' sign. "This way!" he pointed as they started off.
Gasp!
"There are moving sidewalks!!" (Y/N) and Ally both exclaimed. They loved moving sidewalks.
They immediately jumped on the sidewalk in the direction of the taxi terminal.
"Ahh... this is great!"
They closed their eyes to fully enjoy the experience.
But suddenly, they stumbled.
"Dang it. It's over already?"
"I guess..."
They looked back at the sidewalk forlornly.
"So long..."
They turned back around and saw... another moving sidewalk!
Gasp!!
Finally, after many moving sidewalks, they reached the taxi terminal.
"Which did Dad say he reserved? Number 8?" (Y/N) tried to recall.
"I think so."
They walked to the eighth spot to find it occupied by a black SUV. They knocked on the driver's window, which he rolled down quickly after.
"Hi! (Y/N) and Ally?"
"Yep," (Y/N) confirmed. "Do we put our bags in the trunk?"
"Yes, let me help you with that."
They made their way into the car after they loaded their luggage.
"Where to?"
"It's an apartment building in Tokai... I don't remember the address exactly, though..."
"Could you find it for me, please? I can't go anywhere without the address," the driver chuckled.
(Y/N) promptly took out his phone and located the apartment building on a map. After showing it to the driver, the black SUV pulled out of the terminal and set off into the night.
- = + = -
"..."
"..."
"I expected more."
"More what? More colour? More fun? More—"
"Everything."
The apartment was pretty bland. For a newly bought apartment, though, that made sense. There weren't really supposed to be any things in it.
"Is there a bed?" Ally asked, full of hope.
They looked around, trying to find the bedrooms.
"Over here!" (Y/N) called her.
She darted over to find... a standalone mattress. On the floor. By itself.
Her shoulders sank, as did her hope.
"Hey, at least there's two of them!" (Y/N) tried to be optimistic.
"Yeah..."
"Well... Unpack your stuff, I guess. We're gonna be here for a while."
"Bro, thank goodness there's Wi-Fi!" (Y/N) said as he checked his phone for nearby networks.
"Yeah! I don't think we'd be alright without it," Ally agreed.
"I mean, we have data, but since we're roaming, there's a maximum."
"But now we need to address the problem at hand! What's for dinner?"
Ally was right. It was a problem at hand. It was 6:30—not particularly late for Asians to eat, but to get to the place, to order the food, to wait for the food, to get the food... That would all take a bit of time.
"Eh. Heard there was a good burger place nearby."
Ally gasped. "How close??"
"Like, around the corner."
She gasped more loudly. "Really?!"
"I believe so. Let me double-check..." (Y/N) said, pulling out his phone once again.
"Yep," he confirmed, "it's a four-minute walk. Just a bit past that scarily big condo building."
"Oh yeah, that one. I saw it as we were driving here." Ally pretended to get a chill.
"Shall we head over there, then?"
"Sure! Just don't forget your card."
(Y/N) had been given a credit card by his parents specifically for use in Japan. "Got it."
Despite it being late in the evening, it was moderately sunny outside. There was a slight breeze blowing the newly bloomed cherry blossoms from their trees.
"Tempura? Is this the one?" Ally asked (Y/N).
"Yep, that's it."
They walked in and heard the sound of a little bell. A young man spoke up from behind the counter.
"Welcome to Tempura! The menus are on that table," he pointed. "Order when you're ready. You can take a table, too, if you like."
"Thank you!" (Y/N) made sure to mimic the Japanese's politeness. He knew he had to adopt the habit as soon as possible.
While (Y/N) and Ally were looking over the menu, a woman walked in. Well... a young woman.
"Welcome to Tempura! The menus are on that table," the man repeated. "Order when you're ready. You can take a table, too, if you like."
"It's fine, I'll just order," she replied.
"Ah, yes, I seem to recognize you. You've come before, right?"
"Yes, I have. Now, I would like a double cheeseburger with all toppings, to go, please."
"Okay... literally all of them?"
"Yes, please. Oh, except pickles. No pickles, please."
"Okay... Would you like a drink with that?"
"Um... An iced tea would be great."
"Okay... Would you like to make that a combo, with fries, for only a hundred yen more?"
"Um... sure, thank you."
(Y/N) and Ally were secretly eavesdropping.
"What gluttony," (Y/N) muttered to Ally.
"I agree," Ally agreed.
"That will be 1400 yen," the man totaled it up.
"Card, please," the woman replied.
"Thank you! It will be out shortly."
(Y/N) glanced at the girl. To his surprise, she was pretty thin in most parts—thicker in others, but he tried to avoid looking there.
He took note of other things: her outstandingly red hair; the little star-shaped pin near each of her temples; and what really made her stand out—an enormous ahoge.
Of course. It's only natural she has an ahoge to top it all off.
The girl glanced over at them. (Y/N) immediately looked away but kept her in his peripheral vision. Ally, on the other hand, maintained her eye contact with the girl. She smiled at Ally, who happily smiled back.
The girl pointed at her, then (Y/N), then her again, and turned her hand, as if asking a question. Brother, Ally mouthed. The girl nodded.
She formed a thumbs-up, pointed at (Y/N) again, then did the same hand turn. Ally raised her hands a bit and spread them slowly, as if motioning "very", then formed a thumbs-up.
The girl looked impressed at the fact.
Is it that surprising that I'm a good brother? (Y/N) thought.
"Sir, are you ready to order?"
(Y/N) turned his head towards the man talking.
"Um, yes, I am,"—he turned towards Ally—"are you?"
"Yep!" she responded.
"Yeah, we're ready."
"Okay," the man said.
"I will get a double cheeseburger, only ketchup, please."
"And I," Ally piped in, "will get the Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe, with all toppings but pickles. I hate pickles."
The girl looked impressed (again).
"Is that all?"
"Um... We'll also get a large fries and two cups of water, please," (Y/N) finished.
"Alright... 3000 yen."
"Card, please."
"Thank you! You can take a seat, if you like."
Ally led (Y/N) to the table next to the girl.
Why... we just got off the longest flight ever, and now my own sister forces me to sit next to a girl... and a cute girl, no less...
They sat down with a big smile plastered on Ally's face. She knew exactly what she was doing.
"Hi!" Ally excitedly greeted the girl.
Oh my goodness now she's socializing...
"Hi," the girl smiled.
"My name's Ally. Nice to meet you!"
"Likewise! I noticed we have similar tastes."
"Yeah! You don't like pickles either, do you?"
"I don't. I find them quite repulsive."
"Very true."
The girl nodded. "Itsuki. Pleased to meet you." She turned to (Y/N). "And you?"
"Um... yeah, pleased to meet you too."
"I meant your name."
Ally read the expression on (Y/N)'s face: oh my goodness and now she's talking to me what do I do what do I say.
"This is (Y/N), the bestest brother in the world!" she happily explained, resting her arm on his shoulder. He just nervously chuckled and smiled.
"Pleasure to meet you. I see you guys aren't Japanese?"
"Nope," Ally continued, "we're from [nation of choice]."
"Ah, interesting! With the [stereotype 1] and the [stereotype 2]?"
Ally sighed. "Yep..."
The man at the counter suddenly arrived at the table with the food.
"Double cheeseburger, all but pickles, plus fries, plus iced tea?"
"Here," Itsuki motioned.
"Alright... double cheeseburger, just ketchup?"
"Here," (Y/N) motioned.
"And... Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe, all but pickles?"
"Here," Ally motioned.
"Large fries and two cups of water?"
"Here," Ally and (Y/N) both motioned to the space in between them.
"Enjoy!"
Itsuki piped up. "Water is boring. Don't you want some flavour in your drink?"
"We like to stay hydrated here," Ally reasoned.
"Well, enjoy, I guess," Itsuki said as she got up to leave.
"Thank you!" Ally smiled and waved enthusiastically.
Itsuki was not a very social person, but she wasn't able to resist. She waved back just as enthusiastically as Ally did.
~ + ~
"Dang, that was a good burger," (Y/N) noted, satisfied with the meal, getting up to leave.
"Yep," Ally agreed, following suit.
"So how much do we leave?"
"What do you mean?"
"How much of a tip?"
"Dude, the Japanese don't do tips."
"Oh... Right..."
They left the restaurant. Ally gave an extra "Thank you!" on the way out.
(Y/N) sighed. If this means anything, our stay in Japan is not going to go well.
