I opened my eyes to see only debris everywhere around us. I still had Aly in my arms and just when I was getting off my bed I realised that we weren't in my room anymore but in the middle of the living room. The house had what it seemed like exploded and crumbled down, there were debris everywhere, smoke coming out of some places in the house which was now completely destroyed.
I looked around everything was burned everything was broken, there was no ceiling anymore, the walls crumbled down, the only thing that was still standing was me, Aly and my bed. I looked around trying to find Roy when I see his lifeless body laying a few feet away from us and instantly I burst out crying.
I wasn't sad don't get me wrong but the relief of seeing him laying there was something I couldn't even comprehend myself. How could I be happy of someone's death? I looked at Aly, who was still in my arms and she was fast asleep, how did she not hear the boom or feel everything explode around us, how did I not feel a thing? I sat on my bed watching everything I always knew literally die, my pictures with my mom, my clothes, Aly's toys, everything was burned and everything was broken, I couldn't move I was just staring at everything around me. I didn't even realize when the ambulance and firefighters arrived and they took me and Aly in the ambulance. I couldn't hear anything I couldn't process anything, I was completely and utterly in shock.
———————at the hospital——————
I woke up and immediately looked all around me, the room was all white, there were some machines here and there and suddenly I started to realize where I was and panicked not seeing Aly with me.
"I see you have woken up, Miss Jones, how are you feeling?" says a woman entering with a long white doctor coat.
"Where's my little sister?" I asked with pleading eyes.
"Aly is fine she is in the pediatric section but we will bring her to you as soon as we are finished with her exams, how are you feeling? It's kind of a miracle that both of you are well and alive." She said looking at my hands they had small burns that I didn't realise before nor understood where that came from.
"I, I don't know how to feel, what happened?" I asked her as I laid back down on the hospital bed, my head now hurting a bit.
"From what we know a gas leak is responsible for it, apparently someone was trying to light a cigarette up with it, which is pretty dumb, then forgot to turn off the gaz and lit a lighter to light up the cigarette and ended up lighting up your whole house and then you know the rest." She said checking my heart rate.
"Did anyone else survive?" I asked fearing that Roy might have made it.
"No, only you two, which is kind of amazing, where were you when it happened? Because getting out, with barely a scratch out of such an explosion is amazing." She said a bit curious, again.
"I don't really remember I just remember being with Aly because she was crying." I said to her, which seemed to be enough since she stopped talking and nodded her head.
"I will see if they are finished with Aly's exams and if so I'll bring her to you in no time, in the meantime someone from child services is here for you. Do you feel okay to talk to her now?" She asked a small smile on her face.
"Yes sure, and thank you doctor.." I said waiting for her last name.
"Hill, doctor Hill." She said with a smile then left the room, to let another woman enter.
"Good morning Miss Jones, I'm Miss Banner, let me first say how sorry I am for your loss, I know it must be hard to have lost the last person you had in your life, your stepfather." She said to which I snorted a bit but covered it up quickly, as I just nodded to let her continue.
