Chapter 27. My past.

I scowled when I saw tears in Chance's eyes. "Why is he regretting his decision to confront me now?" I asked myself while sighing. I was dismayed when I heard Alexei ask me, "You were planning to leave the company despite knowing who I was, Zachariel?" I nodded, then answered Alexei truthfully with, "I never intended to have a relationship with you, Alexei. I was glad that you were doing well. You didn't need me beside you to survive. I had bought a plot to build my company before applying for a job. I just needed the green light from Axel to establish my business. I won't be leaving you anytime soon, Alexei. You and the kids make me happy, and that is all that I need."

Alexei stroked my head, then uttered, "Thank you for being honest with me, Zachariel." Briac put his hand on Chance's back, then asked him, "Are you satisfied now, Chance?" Chance wiped his tears away, then responded to Briac with, "Yes, I am, Briac." He then looked in my direction and uttered, "I'm sorry for acting like an idiot, Zach." I chuckled while looking at Chance's red eyes. I got startled when Amelia suddenly hugged me. I didn't even see her approaching me. Amelia placed a kiss on my cheek, then said, "You are amazing, Zachariel. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise." I stroked Amelia's back, then responded to her with, "I'll keep that in mind, Amelia." Mr. Marquis sighed, then said, "It's probably not the right time to say this, Zachariel, but I have to get this off my chest. I didn't hire you because of the email that I received from Andrew Waltz. He had mentioned in the email that you had betrayed him. He wrote that you had stolen millions from him. I didn't tell Amelia that I found you because of the letter. I didn't want her to associate with someone untrustworthy."

Amelia frowned at Alexandre, then uttered, "You should have let me be the judge of that, Alexandre. I have seen how caring and helpful Zachariel is. He would never betray his partner." I didn't even concentrate on what Amelia had said. I turned around to face Alexei, then asked him, "Did you also receive an email from Andrew Waltz, Alexei?" Alexei threw his arm around my shoulder, then responded to me with, "We have people who screen our emails, Zachariel. It probably got deleted by one of our workers. We don't accept junk mail. Chance liked your performance, so he hired you. His goal was to win the award for best advertisement this year." Chance groaned, then yelled, "Don't tell him that, Alexei." I sighed while thinking that I had to do something about Andrew before he did something even more drastic to ruin my life.

I got lost in my thoughts and didn't even realize that Alexandre was staring at me. I thought that I had already revealed everything about myself. I was starting to get anxious, so I asked Alexandre, "Are you still worried about my past, Mr. Marquis?" Alexandre leaned forward on the table, then responded to me with, "No, Zachariel. I trust you. I'm just wondering why you didn't make an effort to find your birth parents. You are smart and possess all the resources to seek them. I don't understand why you haven't done it already." I sighed, then stated, "I was curious about my parents as a child, Mr. Marquis. Those cold and lonely nights made me miss them. My interest faded away when I grew up. I did try to find them out of boredom, though. I discovered surveillance footage of that night. The woman who placed me on the doorstep of the church was in her sixties. She could have never been my mother. I didn't want anything to do with my birth parents, so I didn't feel the need to report it to the police. I have survived for this long without them and don't need the people who abandoned me in my life." Alexandre nodded, then responded to me with, "I hope that you will change your mind soon, Zachariel. Anyone would be proud to have a son like you."

We ended our discussion when we heard the children's footsteps. The kids ran towards us while giggling. I groaned when Dominique threw himself at me. Dominique poked my cheek, then asked me, "Can you guess what I've just dreamt about, papa?" I pulled Dominique onto my lap, then answered him with, "Was it about you guys going on a mission to save a bird, Dominique?" Dominique gasped, then asked me, "How do you guess it right every time, papa?" I tickled Dominique, then responded to him with, "Because I'm smart, and because birds and going on adventures are always on your mind, Dominique." Dominique squealed with glee. Genevieve approached her grandfather then asked him, "Would you like to play tag with us, grandpa?" Alexandre smiled at his granddaughter, then responded to her while taking off his suit-jacket with, "Of course, Genevieve. I need some exercise, so start running." Dominique jumped off my lap while squealing, then joined Genevieve. Jacques grabbed Amelia's hand, then said, "Come play with us, grandma."

Amelia took off her heels, then said while picking up Jacques, "Let's go beat everyone at tag Jacques." Chance looked in grief at me, then asked me, "Is everything alright between us, Zach?" I smiled at Chance, then answered him with, "Yes, Chance. Let bygones be bygones. There is no harm done." Chance nodded, then grabbed Briac's hand. He pulled Briac out of his chair, then stated, "It's time to gain some experience as future parents, Briac." Briac chuckled while following his fiancé to the bush where Genevieve was hiding. Alexei moved his chair closer to me after Chance and Briac left. He ran his fingers through my hair, then asked me, "How are you feeling, Zachariel?" I smiled at Alexei, then responded to him with, "I'm fine, Alexei. It wasn't as exhausting as I thought it would be." Alexei placed a kiss on my cheek, then said while looking at his watch, "It looks like my family will be staying over for dinner tonight, Zachariel. I'm going to notify Charlotte about it." Alexei frowned when he heard me laugh. "What are you laughing at, Zachariel?" Alexei asked me while pinching my cheek. I snickered, then answered Alexei with, "You called them your family without a second thought, Alexei." Alexei groaned, then said while walking away, "Stay put, Zachariel. I'll be right back."

I smiled while looking at the kids. They were having the time of their lives with their grandparents and uncles. I was just about the join them when I received an email notification. I was surprised when I saw that it was from Axel. It seemed like Zavier had contacted him. Zavier had told Axel that I was neglecting my health. He was worried that I was going to get sick again. What hurt me the most was the fact that he had accused me of plotting against him. Axel had fortunately ignored his claims, but he still wanted to know the truth about our relationship. I sighed while thinking that I needed to move out of Zavier's house. I didn't even realize that I had been staring at my phone. I got startled when I felt someone's hand on my shoulder. Alexei looked in shock at me when I flinched. He grabbed my hand, then asked me, "What happened, Zachariel?" I put my phone away, then replied to Alexei with, "It's nothing that I can't handle, Alexei. Let's join the kids." Zavier was my problem, and I was surely going to take care of him myself.
