Freefalling; What A Pain

Start from the beginning

He shivered as he tried to back off. But there was nothing behind him. His eyes widened as he glanced down, nothing. There was nothing. I gasped. Luckily, he pulled himself together, scooting away from the edge. He cuddled up into a ball as he pulled his legs up against his chest. More tears came streaming down his face. As he buried his face in between his knees in fear.

I took this chance to observe him. He really did remind me of a lost boy. Even the ripped off-white shirt, which I assumed was very old. By the off-white color. His jeans were ripped up badly too. He looked like he had just escaped from a burning building. I couldn't help to pity the young male. Envisioning him as a crying little boy who had just got attacked by a bunch of bullies. Is it my fault that I wanted to comfort him?

I forcefully shook myself out of my thoughts. As I took a step towards him. I internally sighed in relief when he didn't move away from me. Or he couldn't hear my footsteps in the rain. Either would work. I sighed as I got closer and closer to him. Alerting the boy once again that someone was coming closer. He scooted back. Closer to the edge of the building again. I internally facepalmed myself for being so loud.

I groaned, kneeling down on my knee before him. His breath hitched, scared of what I was going to do with him. He flinched as I reached my hands out to him. He opened his eyes little by little, surprised at the weight on his head. He watched as I smiled at him, patting his wet black hair. A glen of sadness washed over him. I was just happy to see emotions in his eyes again.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Ash."

"Ashy." He perked up, glancing at me in curiosity like a cute puppy. This was the first time he had heard my voice being this soft. I mean he had only heard me laugh at him. I chuckled, "Ashy. May you tell me why you here?"

He gulped, "I wanted to give up on life." He removed my hand from his head slowly, "Have you ever felt rejected from society." He turned away from me, "I guess not. You're a hero, after all."

I watched as he glanced at the night-filled stars. I sat down beside him. Admiring the view in silence. Just with some interruptions here and there. Especially the yelling of other heroes to tell me to pin the lad down on the ground so he wouldn't jump off. I knew he wasn't going to do it. I trusted him. But he did look a bit jumpy.

"I know."

His eyes widened. Not actually thinking that I'll respond to his question. He just assumed that I'll do what the other heroes told me to do. Pin him to the ground. And the cops would bring him to the mental ward.

"It's not my fault."

"I know."

He frowned as more tears came flowing out. His eyes were puffy and red. It hurts a lot for the amount of crying he had been through. He was exhausted, tired, and wanted to leave this world today. But he met a few obstacles on the way.

"It's not my fault..." He cried, "I don't have a role in this world. I don't know what to do with myself. I'm mentally exhausted. And I just wanted to sleep. I want to sleep without thinking if I'm going to eat tomorrow. If I was going to live until tomorrow." He explained, tripping on some of his words, "I'm tired. I wanted to provide for my sister's education. I want her to live a better life than I do." He continued to tear up, "I-"

"Your life isn't done yet."

He snapped his head towards me. I was busy stargazing, ignoring his eyes on me. I yawned, also pretty tired after the events of today. I really wanted to sleep. Lay on my bed and sleep like a log. I had almost forgotten about the lad next to me.

"You don't want to end it now." I smiled, "You have so much ahead of you, young man..." I turned to him, patting his head again, "Just don't give up now."

"I-"

I gasped as I saw him fall over the roof. I glanced around. Everyone was just too occupied in their conversations. The crowd beneath me was the one that was actually focused on this situation. I groaned as the heroes finally turned to me. Tilting their heads in confusion, wondering where the boy had gone. I just wanted to smack every one of them. I frowned, swinging myself off the building too. Going after the kid. I heard surprised gasps and screams as I fell.

"White Noise!" Asher screamed, "Please help me! I don't want to die yet!"

I scoffed and rolled my eyes, "Of course you don't. Why couldn't you say that three hours ago?!"

I reached my arms towards him as my speed increases. The tips of our fingers touch, but I couldn't fully grab his hand. I frowned. As I reached it further, interlocking our fingers together. I celebrated internally as I watched Asher release a sigh of relief. Making me sigh as well. I frowned as I made sure that I had a tight grip on him.

"Hold on-"

He gasped as I swung us up. Onto a nearby building with the help of my support gear. He was in tears as we landed. A wave of cheers could be heard, accompanied by a few chants of my name. I placed him down, dusting off my hands. Sadly, it was still raining, ruining the mood. The boy gasped for air. I probably scared the shit out of him. He coughed, taking in deep breaths, still in disbelief that he had just fallen off a building.

Switching off some levels on my support gear. Changing some gears here and there. I was surprised that this had actually worked. It was the first time I had used it too. I smirked happily with the conclusion. I then turned back to the coughing boy and knees down beside him again. This time with a different question in mind.

"Even though I don't know your quirk. I would love to accept you as my sidekick. You have a lot of potential. Sadly, nobody could see that." I smiled as I lend him a hand.

"What do you say?"

"What do you say?"
