At the end of the song, you take a deep breath as the tears threaten to fall. The others howl and you're taken back to the first time you heard the song.

"Momma, why is this song so sad?"

"It's the tale of our people. We fell into the shadows and they became our home. There is nowhere safer than the shadows for us." Your mother says while stroking your hair.

"The song reminds me of Cindwe. Our ancestor, papa." You tug on your father's shirt.

"That's the point, little bird. It reminds us of those who fell. Those who came before us and those who fall around us." Your father pats your head.

"Oh..." You fidget before tugging on your mother's shirt, "Momma...? Why are our people so sad?"

"You'll learn in time, sweetheart. Now shush, Vander is going to be speaking, and we need to be very very quiet." Your mother lifts a finger in front of her lips. You nod your head and look at the platform wondering why everyone is so sad.

You sniffle and an aching coldness wraps its dead hands around your heart. Your eyes land on Vi once again. She's hunched over, turned towards Caitlyn and very close to her. You can see their lips moving, and you wonder what they could be talking about. 'Vi spent the whole time talking to Caitlyn. She didn't even look at me while I sang.' A hand on your shoulder causes you to turn your head. Ekko's lips are set in a straight line as he shakes his head. You sigh but nod yours as he steps forward to dismiss the Firelights. You step down from the stage feeling something crack deep inside your chest.

Heather practically runs at you once she's out of her seat and catches your elbow in a tight grip. She leads you to the other side of the amphitheater that leads to the Dead Zone. There are no words exchanged between you until you find yourself shrouded in the tunnel's shadows.

"Hawk... I know this isn't the right time but I have to tell you something." Heather says softly.

"Tell me what?" You question dully, clutching your arms to your chest. The image of Vi and Caitlyn is still embedded in your mind.

"Vi is into that Piltie... I'm sorry." Heather puts her hand on your shoulder. The world spirals after that one sentence. Your lip trembles as the tears slip down your already dampened cheeks, "That's not true. S-She's not. She can't." Your voice wavers as dread floods your mind and a coldness begins to seep into your bones.

"Hawk." You hear Liz's voice, "Heather's telling you the truth." She steps into the shadows with you two and lets out a heavy sigh. 'Liz was the one shadowing them this whole time. If she says it...'

"Liz." You whimper brokenly, "Please. Please don't say that. They're oil and water. It can't happen." Your anxiety rapidly chases the feeling of dread as it runs circles around your mind.

"You know I would never lie to you. Especially about something like this. When you're not around, they're close. The conversations they've had are nothing short of blatant flirting... and those are the conversations that I can hear." Liz rubs her arm. 'Hearing this shouldn't affect me so strongly, right? It must be because I'm already upset. Vi would never fall for a fucking Piltie. She told me I was her one and only. She wouldn't lie about that... Would she?' Ice twists in your chest. The matching expressions on your friends' faces don't help. 'She's not going to leave me again. Right? She wouldn't do that. Not again.'

"No... No!" You let out a choked sob, "She wouldn't! T-That's not her. S-She wouldn't!"

"We'd be horrible friends if we let you believe everything was all rainbows and daisies." Heather says gently.

"I'd be a horrible brother if I let you." Ekko's voice sounds and your heart cracks a bit more. You look up as he joins your small group in the shadows, "...Vi likes Caitlyn too, sis. I didn't believe it when I realized it too."
