An ill-tempered alchemist, a girl who enjoys poking fun a little too much, and a poor suit of armor that stands between their fights. An initially forced partnership that forms an unbreakable bond. (Y/n), with her sights set on finding the person re...
The reason you stayed so diligent, always on guard, the reason you took your job so seriously and stayed determined, the reason you acted so tough on the outside. There was a little girl crying for help in there.
"Stop crying already, we understand," he refused to look at you.
"I-I'm trying," you hiccuped and pulled your shirt over your face to hide. He felt his heart drop, your agony pained him. You stood up, aggressively wiping your tears away. You felt embarrassed, ashamed, sick to your stomach. You turned on your heel, walking out without another word.
The brothers shared a look, conflicted and saddened by the harrowing story. "Brother, what do we do?"
But Edward didn't know. He wanted to go after you, but thought you might want to be left alone. "Just leave her alone for now."

You laid awake for hours, unable to sleep with your intruding thoughts. You weakly sat yourself up in the bed, feeling a uncomfortable weight on your chest. The burden of your secret had been lifted off your chest, but a new one replaced it. A guilt you couldn't shake, and a new fear of disappointing the people important to you.
You rubbed your eyes, trying to relax and calm your anxious thoughts. As you looked out the window at the crescent moon, you heard your door open. "Ed?" You watched him walk closer, he looked fidgety and uncomfortable. He sat down on the bed next to you with his arms crossed over his chest, wearing a grumpy frown. "Uh-?"
"Listen closely because I won't say it again," he almost sounded angry.
"Yes..?" You watched him suspiciously. So many things could be said right now. Is he disgusted with me? He's probably pissed.
"I'm sorry," he said it quickly and quietly.
"What?" You watched him stand and start to walk away. "Hold on," you grabbed his hand to stop him. "What did you just say?"
"I told you I won't say it again," he stubbornly insisted.
"Ed," you giggled and tugged on his arm, making his butt fall back on the bed. "What's this about?"
He sighed in response, avoiding eye contact and rubbing the back of his neck. "There's a lot of things I'm sorry for, okay? For throwing that bread at you the other day and telling you to go away... and for asking you about-"
"Wait," you put your finger over his lips and drew his eyes to yours. "It's okay," your cheeks felt hot under his stare. "I wasn't trying to hide anything from you I just... I don't like talking about it..." you said quietly. "And please don't push me away anymore, I just want to help you," you spoke softly, embarrassed to be so serious with him. "Okay?"
You reached out to soothe out his bed head, gently running your fingers through to detangle. It gave him chills and made him sink further into his seat. His eyes were glued to you and it made your heart race. You pulled your hand away and looked at your lap, nervously fiddling your fingers together.
You felt very relieved that he wasn't angry with you. And the fact that he went a step further to actually apologize, it made you feel giddy almost.
"You're right," he sighed and reached out, gently patting the top of your head. "I'm sorry," it was a genuine sorry this time.
You slid down on your side with a satisfied smile and pulled the covers over your shoulders.
"Hey Ed? Will... you stay until I fall asleep?" Your question baffled him. "I-" you felt embarrassed. "I have a hard time sleeping in hospitals," you admitted. He grinned wickedly, remembering Hughes had mentioned something that he promised he'd use against you.
"I suppose they can be pretty scary, sometimes you can hear the ghosts at night," his statement made you go paralyzed with fear, the color draining from your face.
"Don't be stupid Ed..." you pulled the covers over your face and tucked the blanket under your feet.
"Wait... do you hear that?" He shook you to grab your attention. You threw the blanket off your face and carefully listened. A lonely moaning echoed through the halls outside the door. The hair stood up on the back of your neck, and you quickly hid behind Edward, holding onto him as if he'd protect you from the ghosts.
A ghost? A real ghost??
The door swung open, and your soul left your body when you didn't see anyone on the other side. You couldn't even muster any words. You trembled, tightly gripping Edward's shirt with both hands.
A large shadowy figure jumped in from around the corner with a loud "BOO!!" You screamed and started chucking anything you could reach. Pillows, an old cup of water, rolls of bandages. But you stopped when you heard laughter underneath the sheets. "Huh...?" You lowered your arms, realizing there was no ghost. Your cheeks turned red from embarrassment.
Alphonse pulled his poor disguise- a sad hospital sheet- off his body.
"Al! You-?!"
"Good timing Alphonse," Edward stood and proudly high-fived his little brother.
"I was just coming to check on you," he was not as innocent as he played out to be. Red anger rose to your head, your skin visibly steaming. You lifted the small table by your bed over your head and threatened them with it.
"GET OUT!"

You had just been released from the hospital, and Hughes said his goodbyes outside the building before you set off on your next thrilling adventure. He was giving you a lengthy lecture about safety before letting you go. You took it all in with a smile.
He was a mumbling, nervous wreck. "Your wounds haven't completely healed so make sure you take care of them. And don't do anything too reckless. If you see those people from the 5th lab you report to me immediately. Oh- you don't have to worry about Scar anymore but keep an eye out for that masked guy," he tightly grabbed your shoulders. "And finally... Come back to me in one piece."
"I know I know," you pat his arm reassuringly. He threw his arms around your neck, pulling you into his chest and nearly suffocating you. You gave into the hug, letting him hold you until he was satisfied.
When you stepped back, his eyes dropped to yours. They were glossy, and even though you didn't want him to cry for you, it felt good to know he cared so much.
You turned on your toes. "I'll be home before you know it. Don't forget to give Elicia my present! Oh and uh...." You looked back at him and with a nervous smile you said, "thanks, dad."
Those words made his heart sing. He bursted into dramatic tears. You waved as you walked off, joining the brothers' side again.
"Dad huh?" Edward grinned. "He's going to be bragging about that one all year."
You nudged him with your elbow "shut up."
