I'm back boys

Edward awoke uncomfortably on his back with an unfamiliar weight on his left arm. He stirred onto his side with a low groan, his eyes slowly adjusting to the light that spilled into the room from the crack in the window curtain.

He took a breath through his nose, but it caught in his throat when he smelled the shampoo that you used. He held his breath until his face turned red, remembering how you came to him last night. His head blew up in smoke, his entire body glowing a bright red as he tried to untangle his jumbled thoughts.

He sat up as much as he could, his arm stuck under your head. He didn't want to wake you, considering your typical violence in the mornings. He gulped down the lump in his throat and moved as slow as he physically could, laying your head flat against the bed without disturbing your slumber.

He sighed in relief and glared down at you with a troubled expression. This was the most at peace he'd ever seen you.

Normally you slept with your hand next to your gun, constantly on high alert, but right now you were sound asleep without a worry in the world. He was relieved that you could feel so comfortable with him.

He gazed out the window at the fields, feeling a sense of peace that he long chased after. He knew it wouldn't last forever, so he took it all in. He enjoyed the feeling of the chilly morning air against his skin and the sound of birds singing. To his right, a beautiful sunrise. And to his left, a breathtaking woman who put said sunrise to shame.

He wished that the alchemy he lived and breathed would defy logic and turn into something magical. Something that would allow him to freeze time if it meant seeing you at peace for all eternity.

The sunlight kissed your skin, and for a fleeting moment, he was jealous. He had to physically shake his head to come to his senses. Being so helplessly in love that he was jealous of the sun?
Ridiculous. He scrunched his nose and turned his attention to the outside once again.

It didn't last long, his peace. Because the moment he saw Hohenheim out the window reality set in. With furrowed brows he watched him chat away with Pinako in a long-winded goodbye.

The shift of weight in the bed woke you. It wasn't startling, but it was confusing in the first few foggy moments of your wake. You slowly stirred onto your stomach, sighing into the sheets and dreading being awake. You turned your head to face Edward who was completely distracted with the outside world, and the longer you stared the more flustered you felt.

You rubbed your tired eyes and sat up, stretching your arms above your head. "Morning..." you mumbled.

His heart jumped to his throat and he whipped his head around to meet your gaze. "Sorry, did I wake you up?" He braced for an angry blow from you but was pleased when you just gently shook your head no. "Sleep okay?"

"Mhm," you hummed in response and smiled sleepily at him. You looked out the window, seeing his father walking down the dirt road. "Do you think you'll see him again?"

"I better not," he responded in a low voice. He rubbed the back of his head, irritated.

You had a gut feeling that wouldn't be the last time you'd be seeing him though.

"Last night I overheard them talking," Ed almost seemed hesitant to tell you. "Before we head back to Central, there's something I need to check."

"Sure," you felt a little unsettled by his tone. "What is it?"

"He mentioned," he rubbed his hands together anxiously. "The life form we transmuted might not be our mother at all."

He felt your hand come down on his, and it calmed his nerves greatly. "What are you planning to do?" You had many questions after he dropped that bomb, but your biggest concern was his course of action and his safety. Whatever he was planning, it wasn't good.
