Bad Choices || Auston Matthews

The game ended and I'm not able to get ahold of Steph. Her and Mitch are probably out to dinner or doing 'things'. Gross.

I really can't afford to get a hotel for the night. I don't know what to do. I don't wanna make Caleb sleep in his carseat all night.

I guess I have no other choice that to ask Auston if he can take Caleb for the night, so he has a proper place to sleep. Even though I don't want to see his face.

I'm sitting in an empty parking lot with Caleb in my lap, feeding him French fries from my dinner. I picked up my phone and went to Auston's contact and hit 'call'.

It rang four times before he finally picked up.

"Hello?" He answered.

"Hey, can you take Caleb for the night?" I asked.

"Why?" He asked.

"Can I explain in person?" I replied.

"I guess" he told me. I rolled my eyes.

"I'll see you in like fifteen minutes, okay?" I told him.

"Okay, see you then" he replied.

"Alright, bye" I said before hanging up.

I set my phone down and got out of my seat to put Caleb back in his carseat. Once I got him in his carseat and got back into my seat, I started my car back up and pulled out of the parking lot.

I got to Auston's house. I got the diaper bag and got Caleb out of his carseat. I walked to Auston's front door and rang the doorbell.

After a couple moments, Auston finally opened the door and let me in. I didn't wanna be anywhere near him but I felt like I had no choice.

He took Caleb from my arms when we got into his living room and sat down on the couch.

"Why do you need me to take Caleb for the night out of nowhere?" He asked. I took a deep breath, so I wouldn't blow up on him for being the one causing all of this.

"Well, I moved back in with Kody because y'know? You broke Willy and I up. Well, Kody and I got into a fight and I left, I can't get ahold of Steph and have nowhere to go. I'm gonna sleep in my car but I wanted to make sure Caleb sleeps in a safe environment tonight" I explained.

"How did I break you guys up?" He asked, playing dumb.

"Don't play fucking stupid. You told William what you and I did over the summer" I spat.

"Well, I figured if you guys are gonna be making such a big commitment, he needs to know" he shrugged.

"It wasn't your place to say shit to him. I was going to tell him when I felt comfortable doing so" I replied.

"Yeah, if that would have ever happened. If you cared about him, you would have came clean to him to begin with" he told me.

"Who are you to say that I don't care about him? You don't know shit" I asked.

"I know enough" he stated simply.

"Whatever. Can you take Caleb for the night or not?" I asked.

"Yeah, I can. You're more than welcome to stay too" he replied.

"I'd rather not. I'm just gonna sleep in my car" I told him. He rolled his eyes.

"You're not sleeping in your car. I have a guest bedroom, sleep in there. You need to have a safe place to sleep too, y'know? What am I supposed to do for Caleb if you were to get hurt because you chose to sleep in your car?" He brought up. I didn't feel like arguing with him over this.

"Fine" I mumbled.

"Has C eaten dinner, yet?" He asked. I nodded.

"Just need to give him his night time bottle, then he can go to bed" I replied. He said 'okay' and took the diaper bag from me. He dug out the can of formula and went to the kitchen to make him a bottle.

Caleb was put down for bed and now it's just Auston and I.

We're both sitting on opposite ends of his couch in awkward silence. The tension was so thick that you could cut clean through it with a knife.

"...Do you want anything to drink or anything?" He asked, breaking the silence.

"No" I replied, quietly.

"I'm gonna head to bed in a few minutes, just let me know if you need anything" he told me. I nodded before walking upstairs to the guest room.
