Meet Teddy (Teardrop), a nonverbal girl starting high school. Despite her introverted nature, she's going to find herself connected to the centers of drama in the new high school. Between her two childhood friends (one of which has an evil twin), a...
"Oh wow," the other girl replied, seeming to lose a bit of confidence after Phoebe's answer.
"Well, what about you, dear?" Mrs. Regenbogen asked the other girl who raised her hand.
"Ah, I'm Bella Campana," the other girl said, "and the only instrument that I can play is the harp."
"Wow, where did you learn to play the harp?" Phoebe asked.
"My mother taught me," Bella replied.
"How wonderful," Mrs. Regenbogen said. "I would ask if you'd like to play for us, but we have no harps here, unfortunately. The principal says it's over budget."
"It's okay," Bella said. "I've never been to any schools that have harps anyway."
"Well, is there anyone else who can play any instrument?" Mrs. Regenbogen asked. "Don't be shy."
Teddy looked around once more to see if anyone else would step up, but the rest of the class all seemed to be shaking their heads, which Teddy soon did as well.
"Alright then," Mrs. Regenbogen sighed. "Well, I would like the rest of you to pick one instrument that you would be interested in learning. Hopefully, it's an instrument within this room, but if you're willing to buy an instrument that you can feasibly take to and from class, I can work with that too." She paused. "Actually, Bella, does the harp you usually play on happen to be a lever harp? If so, could you bring it to class?"
Bella shook her head. "No, but I could buy a lever harp, if you'd like."
Mrs. Regenbogen nodded. "If you could, that would be great." She turned to her daughter. "And Phoebe, which instrument would you like to work on for this school year?"
Phoebe seemed to think about it for a moment. "I'd like to continue learning more songs to play on the guitar."
"Excellent," Mrs. Regenbogen said before turning to the class once more. "Feel free to look around at the instruments for ideas, but please be careful. Once you know what instrument you'd like to work on for this school year, come talk to me if I'm not busy. If I am, please wait your turn before telling me what instrument you'd like to learn. I won't let you leave unless you tell me what instrument you'd want to learn." And with that, she sat down at the front of the room, leaving the class to do as she asked.
Immediately, Sawyer turned to Teddy and Dora. "What are you planning on choosing?" she asked.
"La flauta," Dora replied.
Sawyer blinked for a moment before asking, "...I'm guessing that means flute?"
Dora nodded. "Sí." She and Sawyer both turned to Teddy afterwards. "¿Y tu?" Dora asked.
Teddy finished up typing and pressed enter. "Piano since I've had to work with keyboards a lot," the automated voice replied.
Sawyer chuckled.
Teddy typed something else into her AAC app and pressed enter. "What about you, Sawyer?" the robotic voice asked.
"I don't know," Sawyer admitted. "Part of me wants to play the same instrument as one of our upperclassman friends, but the other part of me wants to play something different, you know?"
