Teddy blinked. "Connor?" she signed.
"Yes, Connor," Leah confirmed. She sighed, "I know I have no right to say anything because I haven't even figured out my own feelings and he's a nice enough guy, but he brought a bouquet to Penelope's room. Penelope loves plants! I guess... I just felt a bit jealous."
"He said it was for a friend," Teddy signed in response.
"I know, and I feel awful for feeling this way when Penelope's literally suffering right now, but," Leah paused, muttering, "what kind of odd coincidence is this? Things were like this even with Ferris..."
Teddy gaped at that last statement. Leah was also jealous of Connor getting close to Ferris? They hate each other! Teddy thought.
Upon seeing the look on her friend's face, Leah said, "Don't look at me like that! They might hate each other superficially, but they're always together!"
Yeah, always together fighting, Teddy thought, still unconvinced.
"Did you see Connor's face when he was talking about Ferris today?" Leah continued, trying to justify herself. "He blushed!"
Teddy rolled her eyes. "Okay, even if that's true, you've never confessed to Penelope or Ferris," she reminded Leah.
Leah faltered. "I-I guess that's true," she muttered, before sighing. "I'm being selfish, aren't I? Penelope's in the hospital and here I am, worrying about my feelings." She shook her head. "It shouldn't matter who the flowers come from, as Penelope's happy, and I know she'll be happy since she loves plants."
Teddy nodded. "She does always seem happy when she's tending to her garden," she signed in reply.
At this, Leah's eyes widened. "Right, Penelope's garden! She's in the hospital, so nobody's taking care of it! Thanks for reminding me, Teddy. I know how I can help Penelope now. I can tend to her garden! I mean, she would hate it if her plants died while she was away!"
As Leah moved to leave, Teddy hurried to stand in front of the door to get her attention. "Hold on, Leah. Calm down. I'm sure her parents are making sure her garden is being maintained," she signed. "And considering how Penelope reacted when we visited, she might take this the wrong way. She might think you're pitying her."
"But I'm not," Leah protested. "I just want to help."
"And I know that, Leah," Teddy replied, "but I don't know if Penelope does."
Leah's face fell. "...Fine, I'll wait a bit before going over to help. But in the meantime, I want to help at least one of my friends." With this, Leah's expression became determined once more. "Teddy, I'm going to help you with your homework!" she declared.
We really need to something about you forcing your help onto people, Teddy thought. "I don't need help with that," she tried to convince Leah.
"Then how about I help you with your social life?" Leah exclaimed. "I'll sign you up for a club!"
"I'll take the homework help instead," Teddy quickly signed.
It turned out that there wasn't really much Teddy needed help with in regards to her homework, but Leah still seemed proud during the few times Teddy did get stuck and Leah could use her recollection of what she'd learned two years ago to help.
Well, at least she's happy, Teddy thought.
Right before she went to bed that night, she checked the group chat that she had been added to yesterday. Talia had apparently made a bad pun earlier that day and Sawyer had politely pretended to laugh. Or did Sawyer actually find that funny? Teddy didn't know. Lola insulted the pun immediately and then Talia and Lola both started playfully insulting each other.
