A choice that matters (Kris x Reader)

(Y/n)'s POV.

Another puzzle blocked our way but this time the answer was vandalized, so that we had no idea how to solve this. "Great. What now?" I groaned in frustration. "Maybe we could ask around? Perhaps someone knows the password." Ralsei said and since we didn't have many other options, we followed along with that plan.

There were holes in the ground around the area. We walked over to one of them, hoping to find a clue but as soon as we got close a round head with a thin neck sprung out with a big smile. "Omg, Rouxls Kaard came by... What a hunk! Am I right, girl?" They asked me with excitement. I didn't know how to respond so I just gave a "Uhm... Suuuuuuure?" I heard a huff from behind me but dismissed it. "He vandalized the puzzle to stop the Lightners... But WE know the answers!" They continued and I instantly picked up on that. "Really? You do? Would you mind telling us? We have some important... uhm... business up ahead and we can't get trough." I asked politely, leaving out the details since I doubt they would tell us, if they knew that we have a Lightner traveling with us.

"Oh, of course we'll tell you! Ummm... The first symbol is definitely a Heart! Haha, just like Love! Does that help?" I don't know why but when they said the world love, for some reason, an image of Kris came into my mind. 'The hell! Why is he popping up in my head all of a sudden? I can't love him! I just met him hours ago! If anything, I just have a small crush on him! Yeah! That's it! I just think he's cute! With his messy hair... His soft smile... His gentle touch.... His bravery... His protectiveness... His-- Whoa! OK, this is going way too far!'

"Yeah, this helps us a lot, thank you!" Ralsei answered for me since I was too busy scolding my inner voice. "Great, my siblings will tell you the other answers, just go to the other holes!" So we did. They weren't able to give as a concrete answer but did give us some information that can help us figure it out. After we talked to them, we went back to the puzzle and thought about it for a moment. "Let's see... First symbol is a heart, none of the symbols are the same and there are no clubs in it." It took us a moment before we solved it and a new path opened up.

As we were about to continue on, a Darkener came up behind us. It were the three heads we just talked to but now we could see their full body, which revealed that the three of them shared the same body. Apparently, it was their birthday and one of the heads was insulted that we didn't congratulate them, while one of them timidly tried to stop them. We were pulled into a fight, which lasted a bit longer than usual since every head had their own things they liked and it took us a while to figure out how to sooth each of them. The whole time they tried to talk at the same time making them sound like a bad choir. It was a lot, to say the least...

During the fight, we figured out that they liked to talk about boys, so Ralsei tried to direct the subject on that. "Umm... What kind of 'Boys' do you like?" He asked, clearly flustered at such a question. They immediately perked up. "Glasses are cute, I think..." "Fluffy! Glasses! That's it!" "HIM???... err, sure." Two of them winked at Ralsei. He blushed out of embarrassment, covering his face with his hat. I stepped in front of Ralsei protectively. "HEY! That's my best friend you're talking about! I mean sure, he's adorable. But that doesn't mean you can just hit on him!" I hisses at them. "(Y-(Y/n)..." Ralsei whined, still embarrassed by the situation.

"Hey, what about you! What kind of boys do you like?!" One of the heads asked me, eager to hear my answer. My face paled and flushed at the same time. 'Me and my big mouth... How do I explain what I like of my crush is standing right next to me!!!' I opened and closed my mouth a couple of time but no sound came out, I probably looked like a fish. "I'm quite curious aswell. What type of guy can make your heart race, doll~?" Kris chimed in with a smug grin on his face. I gave him the side eye. 'Asshole! You know damn well what kind of affect you have on me!'

"Uhh... I... don't know..." I managed to get out, hoping that would be a good enough answer for the clover but... of course it wasn't. "Aww, come on, everyone has a type!" "Just spit it out already!" "Uhm, you really don't have to if you don't want to..."

I furrowed my eyes at the ground before letting out a sigh. "I guess... I like someone I can depend on... someone caring... and brave... Uhh, yeah..." I stammered out, wanting nothing more than the earth to sollte me whole. The clover, and Ralsei, aww'ed at it. Oh how I could feel Kris's stare on me. It was intense but somehow, it didn't make me uncomfortable. I cleared my throat. "So... can we pass now? L-Like I said, we have some business up ahead, soo..."

"Oh, of course!" "Fine, I guess." "Sure, sorry for bothering you...!" With that, we spared them and they walked away.

There was an awkward silence in the air. The tension was thick enough to cut with Kris's sword. I couldn't stand this awkwardness and blurted out. "Allright then, I'll be up ahead!" I ran a few meters away, holding my blushing cheeks, feeling the heat coming off from them.

Author's POV.

Once (Y/n) was out of earshot, the two boys looked at each other and shrugged before following after her. As they were doing that, Ralsei glanced at the older companion from the corner of his eye. "Uhh, Kris?" Kris hummed, indicating that he was listening. "This situation got me curious... What's... uhm... What's your type...? You don't have to answer if you don't want to, of course!"

"No, it's fine." Kris interrupted him. "My type.... Hmm..." I thought about it before looking up ahead, where (Y/n) was still trying to calm herself. "I like a girl who's passionate and kind. Who has her heart in the right place but isn't afraid to kick butt if she has to. I also like confidence but I'd also like to protect her at times. Some weird random hero instinct, you know?" He explained, not taking his gaze away from (Y/n). A smile came to his lips as he thought about her.

"I see..." Ralsei hummed, full aware of Kris's eyes on his best friend up ahead. They fell silent for a moment. "You know... You should tell her..." Ralsei broke the silence. Kris's eyes widened, looking towards him in question. "What do you--..."

"Kris, people look at me and think I'm completely oblivious and I have to admit, I am in a lot of ways but I can't ignore what's directly in front of me."

Kris blushed and he avoided eye contact. "I'm just saying... Kris, we are on a quest to not only safe the world but also to send you and Susie home... And we don't know if you'll be able to come back... You should tell her how you feel before it's too late. I'd certainly be happy for both of you." Ralsei gave on of his famous smiles, placing a hand on Kris's shoulder before walking ahead towards (Y/n)'s side.

Kris stared after them, his walking pace dicreasing for a moment.

'He's right... I'm going to go home soon. Back to mum and dad....and Asriel... but no (Y/n)... Should I even continue this whole flirting thing with her if I might never see her again after this? Perhaps I should try to distance myself. Dammit Kris! You know what happens when you get attached to someone. It only hurts in the end...
