"You two better not get hurt. Got it?" the blond said, tugging you and Matt into a tight hug. Mello had always been against physical affection and would always grumble, but this hug felt very final this time. As you clung to your boyfriends, a pit settled in the pit of your stomach.

"We should ask the same of you," Matt quipped, a grin overtaking his face. "You're far more likely to toss yourself in the lines of danger."

"I'll try not to," Mello replied, pressing his lips against you and Matt. With that, he settled his helmet over his head and hopped onto his motorcycle.

You and Matt piled into the latter's car as you both waited to watch Mello kick off and ride away, disappearing into the night.

"Hey, Matt?" you said, waiting for the man to hum in response. "I don't have a good feeling about any of this."

"It's important to think happy thoughts, (Y/n)," Matt responded, ruffling your hair and settling his eyes on your worried expression. "If push comes to shove, I will not hesitate to protect you."

"I'll protect you as well... Tooth and nail." Your fingers wrapped around his as he moved out onto the road. "You remember the plan, right?"

"I may or may not need another run-down," he murmured, sheepishly avoiding your gaze as you softly giggled.

"This may be one of our last missions. Of course, you forget the plan."

---

Heavy breaths left Matt as he took a long draw from his cigarette, eyebrows shooting up at the mass of police cars that were gathered around his car.

"Welp, so much for my luck..." he muttered, hand reaching out to open his car door. His arm was caught by your hand, causing him to falter and shoot a questioning glance at you. "What is it, love?"

"I don't have a good feeling about this..." you softly replied, your eyes glued on the police. You gently tugged on the sleeve of Matt's striped shirt, pleading with him to stay in his seat.

"I know, but they're not going to shoot us-"

"Matt, I don't trust them. We don't know who they're working for. They could be working for Kira, and they would shoot us without a second thought. When has my intuition steered us wrong?" you plaintively responded, watching as Matt glanced at the crowds and took another draw. His gloved hands moved to push his goggles back over his eyes as he quickly pressed a kiss against the side of your face.

"Alright, then. Let's hope I can get us out of this sticky situation." As soon as he had placed his hands back on the steering wheel, shots rang out.

In terror, you dived down and pulled your boyfriend down with you. Strangled curses left Matt as his car sped forward, crashing into multiple things, none of which you could see. Your mind raced, trying to discern if he was shot. The windshield was littered with holes, which wasn't a very good sign. Obviously, some bullets had entered the car. It seemed like years until Matt was able to park the car in a safer location. He slumped against the steering wheel, taking gulping breaths.

"You good? Are you bleeding?" Matt's exhausted voice cut through the ringing in your ears. His hand reached out to shake your shoulder as he studied your body for any sign of bleeding. "(Y/n), I'm going to need you to snap out of it. We still need to get through this and meet up with Mello. Though he can handle himself, I really don't trust that Takada woman."

"Yeah..." was all you could muster before looking over Matt worriedly. Your fingers strayed to your backpack, which held your medical kit.

"I'm okay, (Y/n). I don't think my baby is okay, though." Matt answered, throwing a mournful look at his car.

"Mel and I will buy you another car once this is all said and done," you replied, sitting up straighter in your seat. "Now, hurry up..."

"Nothing can replace my baby-"

"Shut up and drive!"

--

Your hands tore away the notebook paper that was crumbled up in the girl's fist, trying your best to ignore the blood that pooled around her body, which leaked from the bullet hole in her head. Matt pushed his gun back into his pocket as he neared the scene, watching as you picked up Takada's blood-splattered phone as well.

"How far did she get on Mel's name?" he asked, peeping over your shoulder.

"She was nearly done with the final letter," you answered, your eyebrows knitting in thought. "That doesn't count, does it?"

Once Matt shrugged in response, the two of you rushed to the front of the truck, throwing open the door to reveal Mello's irritated face.

"Why the hell are you two early here? What was that gunshot for?" he immediately asked, only growing more frustrated when you and Matt pulled him into a hug. "For God's sake, can one of you answer me already?"

"Just take a look at this," you quickly answered, holding out the paper for Mello to read. His eyebrows shot up as he palmed the back of his neck.

"Well, it looks like we got a lot of information," he muttered, glancing over at Matt. "I had heard something about shots being fired, so I was sure that you two had..."

As Mello's words faded away, Matt neared him and ruffled his hair, letting out a laugh. "Nah, we wouldn't die that easily. You can't get rid of us that easily, Mel."

"Why would I want to be rid of you guys?" Mello grumbled as Matt settled into the seat next to him.

"We also found another thing," you said, holding out the phone for your boyfriends to look at. "It's the woman's phone. If you look at her call history, it looks like she forgot to clear it. And her last call?"

"Huh, Light Yagami..." Matt murmured, glancing over at the cocky grin that spread across Mello's face.

"That bastard may have made a detailed plan, but she screwed up a big part of it," Mello proclaimed, letting out a chuckle. "Of course, Near couldn't find out something like this. I'm going to need heavy compensation since my life was on the line."

"Can you just send the news over to him so we can finally relax?" Matt asked, his brow creased. "I really don't want to worry about getting my head blown off."

"Whatever you want," you replied, pulling out your phone and calling up the SPK. As soon as you had managed to deliver the news to Near, you pocketed the phone and neared the two men. "I don't think Near will be bothering us for a while."

"Huh, that's something I never thought I would hear," Mello replied, letting out a groan when Matt pulled him into a side hug. "What are you doing?"

"I'm just relieved that you both are alive. Thanks to (Y/n), I'm still walking around." Matt winked at you, a smile pulling at his lips. "C'mere, (Y/n). Don't act like you didn't just save our lives."

Once you had neared them, you were immediately pulled into the hug by your red-headed boyfriend. A few moments passed before Matt finally proclaimed, "Hey, remember my car?"

"Matt, just shut up and let us enjoy a moment," Mello jokingly responded, rolling his eyes as Matt let out a hearty laugh.

"Aww, just admit that you love us!"

"I mean, I don't hate you two..." he replied as he placed his chin on the top of your head. "(Y/n), I really owe a lot to you, you know? Whatever you want... Just say it, and I'll do it."

"I just want us to be safe and happy together," you replied, watching as Mello's lips turned in a small smile.

"I think I might be able to do that."

"What about making my wishes come true? I'm still waiting on my new car-"
