"This is quite the situation, Mello!" Matt called from his place on the couch, video game controller in hand.
"I really want them to be my partner. The thing is I don't know how to do so..." Mello took a bite of his chocolate, which always seemed to relieve his stress.
Ever since his parents had died, he had grown more anxious and the only way to soothe him was chocolate; it had now become a habit, even as a young adult.
"Dude, all the girls were in love with you back at Wammy's..."
"I didn't pay attention to them. I didn't want to bother them. I want to bother (Y/n)!"
"Why don't you tell them that?" Matt flashed a grin at him, who scoffed and shook his head.
"That is not going to sit well with them, knowing their attitude and need to always start a fight."
"Are you sure that you're not talking about yourself?"
Mello ignored him as he strode over to flop onto an armchair, letting out a deep sigh.
"You know, Matt, we may be book smart and street smart, but we do not know how to please a girl..."
"I'm a gamer, so I'm obviously good with my-"
"You know exactly what I mean, Matt..." He took another bite of his chocolate bar before his blue eyes lit up with an idea. "How about I invite them to a nice dinner here, possibly?"
"Right. We could order pizza!" Matt exclaimed as Mello turned to stare at him. "We could all watch a good movie together!"
"I'm not having you be the third wheel, dumbass..."
"I know that, dumbass! I have the right to be sarcastic all I want!"
"I gotta have that printed on a T-shirt..."
"Damn right! Seriously, though, what do you think you're doing?"
"I could get take-out and set up a nice dinner here. You will be in your room, or even better, out of the house for tonight--"
"You just want me out so I don't hear you two tonight," Matt interrupted as Mello rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Anyway, I will ask them sometime, and it will go right, hopefully..." Mello got up from his seat and moved to go to his room, rifling through his closet for a jacket to put on.
"Good luck, Romeo!"
"Hopefully, it won't end as badly as that," Mello responded, striding out of his room as he shrugged on a leather jacket.
"You have always been known for dramatics!"
"Not to that point..." Mello's fingers reached over for his keys, which were haphazardly tossed on the coffee table.
"Mello, you probably won't even live past twenty-five!"
"That is true, but it only makes this even more important before my time is up. Wish me luck!" He opened the door and disappeared out of it.
As soon as seven rolled around, he was back with Chinese takeout, and Matt had helped him with the setup of the table.
"How do you know it works?" asked Mello, arching his brow skeptically at the red-haired boy.
"Trust me, dude. This is good stuff!" Matt answered, shoving the scented candles on the table. "Here's lavender, which is proven to calm you down. I'm sure you'll need that. For some reason, cinnamon will be good for a romantic sense..." He pulled his goggles over his eyes and strode over to the door. "Of course, you could choose to not trust me and the whole thing flops, but whatever! Good luck! Try not to be loud so the neighbors don't call the cops. Wouldn't want them barging in while you're doing the do!" The gamer closed the door after himself, leaving behind a nervous Mello.
His phone buzzed from his pocket with a text from you that you were on the way to the destination. With a sigh, he lit the candles and resigned himself to double-checking and munching on a bar.
Twenty or so minutes passed before your knocks echoed in the room and Mello took a moment to take a glance at his reflection. Satisfied with what he saw, he opened the door and was immediately greeted by a hug. With a smile, you rambled on about how you had just come from your mother's birthday party.
"It was a lovely party, but I am even more glad to be here with you!" you exclaimed, glancing at the decorated table. "Oh, it looks wonderful!"
Your (y/c) eyes lit up as you took a seat at the table and grabbed a fork, eyes landing on the noodles. You immediately started to ladle mountains of noodles high on your plate, causing Mello's eyebrows to shoot up in disbelief.
"Oh, um, sorry!" you apologized, blood rushing to your cheeks as you grabbed a few rice balls. Taking a small bite out of the rice ball, you averted your eyes away from the shocked boy.
"I just didn't expect you to be adamant about noodles! Don't worry," Mello tried as he took a small serving of the rice and thought longingly of his chocolate stash. However, he was going to map up and do it without any type of comfort food.
"Oh, my dad used to always fix noodles in a similar fashion. It brings back happy childhood memories!" You twisted your fork in the noodles as you two kept up a conversation in between bites and sips.
"Listen, I need to talk to you about something..." Mello tried as you fixed your gaze on him. He immediately regretted it, but he still decided to continue anyways. "I think you already know that our relationship is closer than most."
"Mello, where are you going with this?" you asked, quirking up your eyebrow.
"I want to be more than friends, (Y/n). Will you be my partner? It's okay if you don't want to. I understand-" He was silenced as you rushed into his arms.
"Do you really mean it?" you questioned, burying your head into his chest as he wrapped his arms around your waist.
"Of course I do. I don't like leading people on..." Mello chuckled softly, turning a soft pink as you leaned up to kiss his temple. He hoped there would be more of the temple kisses exchanged between them in the years to come, but now was good enough. "Do you want to take this to the couch? I can put on a movie that Matt recommended."
"What's it called?"
"Ready Player One, I think..."
"Sounds interesting. I'll man the popcorn!" You moved into the kitchen and opened the pantry, rooting around for the popcorn.
Mello took a moment to take a deep breath before putting on the movie, ears picking up the popping of the corn. It was calming to listen to it, but soon you had taken it out and the comfort ended. You padded into the living room, two bowls of buttered popcorn in hand.
"Mello, I found that chocolate stash of yours!" you giggled as Mello turned to glare at you.
"Do not eat anything, and do not tell Matt. He always steals something just to see my reaction."
"Well, I used my liberty to take some!" you responded as Mello growled. "Shut it. I melted some on top of your popcorn." You tipped his bowl forward to prove it before handing it to him.
"Thank God!" Mello exclaimed as he hit play on the movie. "I've been needing this for a while..."
You curled up into Mello, popping the treat into the movie and relishing the buttery goodness. Mello wrapped his arms around you. He may have thought the popping of the kernels was relaxing, but this was even more so. A small smile curled his lips and he settled a blanket over the two of you. You two stayed in for the rest of the night, wrapped in each other's arms and watching movies.
