Near-death experiences will do that to you, y'know?

'You okay, Miles?' He asked, a hint of worry in his voice.
I hesitated for a moment.

I took a deep breath...

In, out.

And decided not to disclose the evening's events.

'I'm...fine, Ganke. Just tired from all the painting.' I said, looking at the door.

I could hear Ganke raising an eyebrow, but luckily, he chose not to say anything.

Thank you, Ganke.

I took a shower and let the water splash onto my body. As I cleaned up, I thought about the day's events. Who would've thought that a day that started out great would end in the most horrifying way I could have imagined?

In the morning, I talked about the Prowler.

In the evening, I met the Prowler.

I could not imagine the week going any worse than it already had. It was only Monday, and I was already behind on homework and had almost gotten myself killed by a villain.

Just peachy.

As I let my mind wander, my thoughts moved over to how I had even gotten away from him.

What was that weird zap of electricity, and why did it only come then?

Why did I turn invisible?

I'm pretty sure this isn't puberty.

I got out of the shower and dried off.  I don't have the energy for this - I'm going to bed.

Timeskip

*Beep beep beep*

I rolled over and glanced at my alarm clock for 5 straight seconds before slamming my hand down on it to make it shut up. It was 7:15 already, and I hadn't gotten a wink of sleep last night because, for some damn reason, I was tossing and turning with my eyes wide open. I think it showed how pissed I was.

The curtains were closed, but I could see the morning light shining through them, gently nudging me awake.

I wasn't in the mood for gentle - I wanted to sleep.

I was so done with the day already that  I shut up my alarm clock forever by smashing it into a million little pieces.

Ganke, who was coming out of the bathroom, looked at me in shock.

That's new.

(Blah, blah, blah)

I tugged at the ends of my trousers anxiously, hoping that no one noticed how short they were.

I gotta get new pants, man.

These were brand new, and it was the second day of school.

How did I outgrow these so fast?

I thought I was tall before, but now I was at least 6"0, towering over everybody else. And I kept getting weird looks from people.

Why are they looking at me? Is there something I did wrong?

Why am I thinking so loud?

What's wrong with me-

I didn't notice the tingle running down my spine until I bumped right into someone.

Gwen.

'Oh!' She said, turning around.

'Hey, Miles,' She smiled at me.

'Uh, hey,' I replied.

There was an awkward pause before I continued talking.

'U-uh, sorry about bumping into you,' I twiddled my thumbs nervously and stared at the ground.

I peeked upward and saw that Gwen's skirt was a hell of a lot shorter than before. Did she grow, too?

She clearly was very embarrassed about it, because she was tugging on her skirt a lot in order to pull it down.

.

.

.

I never noticed how nice her legs were

Snap out of it, Miles! You've known her since middle school! Stop being a creep.

I averted my gaze and looked back up at her face, which held a worried expression.

'Are you...okay? You seem out of it today,' Gwen asked.

'I'm...fine!' I said, looking away completely. It felt so wrong to look at Gwen right now, especially because of how she was dressed.

'Are you sure? You're acting really weird,' she said suspiciously, leaning over to look at me.

'Everything is fine!' I shouted, completely flustered.

Maybe a little too loudly because everyone in the hall stopped and stared at us. You know, the HUGE, WIDE, HUMOUNGOUS hallway filled with students.

Gwen looked taken aback and slightly hurt as she stepped away from me.

Way to go, Morales. You just yelled at your best friend.

I couldn't believe it. I had just yelled at Gwen.

The worst part is,  I wasn't even mad or anything - I was just...well...I don't even know what I was.

That didn't change the hurt look in her eyes as she slowly stepped away from me.

'O..kay, then. I'll...see you around, I guess.'

And I watched her longingly as she walked away with her head hanging low.

As she got lost in the crowd, my eyes stayed open for her and only her.

But she had disappeared.

Damn it.
