You're leaning back on a folding chair, your eyes closed as the sun warm your face. Then you hear a click beside you and open your eyes to see Mason taking a photo of Reles cutting Cole's hair. The guys get all hyped up and throws off their shirts and pose on some boxes. You roll your eyes with a chuckle. Mason laughs and takes more photos.
Chapman is sitting beside you, writing in his notebook. You had discussed some parts of the mission, then just ended up sitting together in a comfortable silence, listening to your comrades around you. Mills walks over to you and Chap.
"What you writing there, Chap?"
"Letter to my boy."
"Dear Billy. I know I said I would be home by your birthday, but I lied straight to your face. I'm a terrible dad. I hope this letter makes up for it." Mills playfully says.
Chapman looks over to you. You try to hold back your chuckle.
"It's too short." Chap says and you all laugh.
You have a competition with Reles on who could do the most pull-ups. You're about to win when Mills and Slivko comes over and sits on your backs. You fall down immediately, glaring at Slivko laughing beside you after falling off your back when you hit the deck. Reles managed to take one last push up with Mills on top of him, therefore winning your little competition.
Mason has still been around or close by when you stand up. The second Slivko is about to make some comment, you decide to tackle him. It's just friendly sibling sparring. You hear a click when you have Slivko in a chokehold. You look up at Mason, who's smiling and laughing. You finally let go of Slivko when he taps out. He doesn't care if he lost and just laughs with the boys at himself for not being able to hold his own against his sister. You walk over to Mason.
"Hey, I don't think I've properly introduced myself yet. I'm Yn." You give her your hand and she shakes it.
"Mason Weaver. Anti-war photographer. I know you though."
You look at her, confused.
"Don't worry, you didn't meet me. I was just spying on my fiancés best friend flirting with a girl, playing pool." She winks with a smirk.
You hear 'oooh's' and whistling from the guys around you.
"What did you say now?" Slivko asks from behind you.
You turn and everyone is looking at you and Mason, waiting for her to elaborate. She chuckles to herself, then mouths 'sorry' to you. You sigh, knowing you won't hear hear the end of this.
"Now, who's the lucky one to not get punched in the face for looking twice at Yn?" Mills asks her, knowing you won't answer.
Mason just shrugs, and turn to walk away to take more pictures, but not before looking at all the guys then smoothly shifting her gaze up, leading their eyes to follow hers up to the platform. James is standing there, looking out on the horizon. The guys goes burst out in excitement as they start teasing, laughing and cheering. They weren't expecting the person to actually be here when they asked so they are really enjoying this. Some of their comments and questions make you chuckle, but you don't give them anything, not wanting to put more wood on the fire.
After some time, and the guys are a little more calm and the topic changed for them, Slivko comes to sit beside you."Hey, so.. I can probably not win a fight against that guy, but I'll take a beating to atleast try to defend your honour, you know that right?"
You laugh. "I know. Thanks."
"So.. Conrad, huh?"
"What? You know him or something?"
"No, I just met him as he was introduced to us when he first got onboard. You hadn't arrived yet, I think. What I mean is, you like this guy?"
You shake your head with a soft chuckle. "I don't know. I don't know him."
Turning to look up at James, you find him already looking in your general direction. At first you don't assume he's looking at you, but then you can faintly see him smile as you had turned to look his way.
...
Packard brought you and Chapman up to the meeting with the captain, Nieves and Randa.
"This storm looks a lot nastier in person. Maybe we should consider postponing the mission."
"How far away is this island?" Packard asks the captain.
"Fifty miles, maybe more."
"Take us closer." Randa says.
"You wanna launch, you do it from here."
Randa turns to Packard. "Can you punch through that, Colonel? Our opening is now."
"Through this hole right here?" He points to the map.
"Yeah, it's a rare low-pressure pocket."
"I appreciate your passion, Randa." Nieves tells him. "But as field supervisor of the controlling agency, I say we abort. That's it, we're gonna abort."
"Wise call. I'm sure the Landsat inspector will be inspired by your courage."
"No, he'll be inspired by my common sense. This is only a map survey."
"To one of the last uncharted areas on the face of the Earth. And you wanna call it on account of rain? Stay on the boat if you want to. It could be years before we get another chance at this." Randa tells him and turn to Packard. "I'm told your unit is capable of handling inclement weather, Colonel. Why don't we leave it to Colonel Packard to break the tie?"
You look out at the raging storm, glancing at Chapman and Packard you share a smile and shrug. Packard looks thoughtful as he gazes at the storm, calculating and considering.
