Chapter 35: I want to be both your younger brother and stepmother. (12)
Yue Chu stood outside Rafa's chamber, holding a bunch of freshly picked moonlight flowers in his hands. The tender silver petals bloomed gracefully, adorned with glistening dewdrops.
Rafa's palace was situated at the heart of the royal city, yet despite being the seat of the vampire king, there were no guards as one might expect. Not even a single soul was in sight. Hence, it was no surprise that Yue Chu could easily infiltrate it on his first attempt.
The massive black doors were imposing, adorned with carvings of snakes and roses. Sinister serpents emerged from the rose bushes as if poised to strike at any moment. However, their tails were entwined tightly by thorny stems, intertwining in intricate patterns, evoking an ancient sense of mystery. There wasn't even a lamp at the entrance, and were it not for the keen vision of a vampire, Yue Chu would likely have trouble finding his way.
After hesitating for a moment outside, Yue Chu composed himself and approached, gently knocking on the door. "Your Majesty, may I come in?"
Silence greeted him from within. Just as Yue Chu was about to lower the flowers and turn away, the door slowly creaked open.
Yue Chu smiled softly, lifting the hem of his robe as he stepped over the tall threshold and entered. The floor was smooth black stone, and his crisp footsteps echoed loudly in the quietness. The hem of his trailing robe brushed against the ground, and the keen vampire hearing could catch the faint rustle.
The hall was spacious but pitch-black, with only the path Yue Chu treaded lighting up gradually with dim lamps, illuminating his way. It didn't resemble a comfortable chamber; rather, it felt like a tomb, burying the vampire king within.
Rafa sat high on his throne, silently watching the child approach. The faint silver light from the moonlight flowers illuminated Yue Chu's delicate face, his smile shining like a beacon of warmth in the boundless darkness.
Yue Chu bowed respectfully, then, without waiting for permission, ascended the steps to Rafa's side, holding up the flowers. "Your Majesty, I noticed these moonlight flowers blooming exceptionally beautiful tonight and thought to pick a bouquet to gift to you. Would Your Majesty like them?"
His eyes, clear as the moon, were filled with anticipation. Freed from the restraint of daylight, the night seemed to have relaxed his guard, and his words carried an unmistakable intimacy.
Rafa had never been approached so intimately before. Even when Xinuo was young, he would never speak to him in such a coquettish tone. Despite being the closest father and son, Xinuo still feared him; it was an ingrained fear in his blood.
Rafa averted his gaze, nodding almost imperceptibly, evidently finding it somewhat difficult to resist.
Yue Chu immediately beamed with a smile, turning to descend the steps and picking up the crystal glass bottle from the table. He placed the bouquet of moonlight flowers inside, gently arranging the blossoms to showcase their beauty. Stepping back to admire his handiwork, he glanced sideways at Rafa.
Yue Chu: "How does Your Majesty find it?"
That seeking approval gesture made it impossible for Rafa to refuse. He cleared his throat, murmuring a hesitant "Hmm" after a moment.
Compared to his earnest lectures to Xinuo, Rafa's speech was notably sparse at this moment. However, Yue Chu didn't mind; as long as the king was willing to respond, it was sufficient.
