Chapter 37: I want to be both your younger brother and stepmother. (14)
The Royal Palace was destined to be restless this night.
The vast hall was brightly lit, the blood-red carpet seeming to be soaked in blood, glaringly red. Two crimson birds atop the candlesticks spread their wings, holding up the candles. Though the light was warm yellow, it emitted a chilling aura. In the corners, gray-white statues with hollow eyes gazed ahead lifelessly, the swords in their hands reflecting a piercing cold light.
Yue Chu stood to the side, his gaze sweeping over the three figures kneeling in the center of the hall, and then he slightly lowered his eyes, diminishing his presence.
The only thing that surprised him in this scene was that he had been summoned as well. Apart from the imposing figure of Rafa, all ten elders of the vampire clan were present. He was the only one who shouldn't be here.
After all, this was a matter concerning the dignity of the vampire clan.
Rafa sat on the throne, the smooth armrests beneath his hands devoid of any warmth. He thought he would be furious, but at this moment, looking at Xinuo kneeling on the ground without any sign of yielding, his heart was surprisingly calm, so calm it was unbelievable.
Perhaps amidst this ongoing conflict, he had already prepared himself mentally, anticipating the worst outcome.
Rafa's dignified brows seemed covered in thick frost, emitting a chilling aura that made people shy away, unable to meet his gaze. His pupils were filled with indifference, unwilling to spare even a trace of extra emotion for Xinuo. The once intense emotions had dissipated in disappointments, turning into the current indifferent demeanor.
"Xinuo, do you know your crimes?" Rafa's voice was cold, devoid of any warmth.
Xinuo sneered, the veins on his forehead bulging with anger. What crimes? He had no crimes!
"I am guilty of nothing, but if Father insists on convicting me, then so be it!" Xinuo's voice was sharp with defiance.
Rafa remained expressionless, not provoked by Xinuo's words. Setting aside the bottomless indulgence, he pointed out Xinuo's issues.
"One, you are a prince of the vampire clan. Associating with humans is a major crime of treason. Two, for the sake of a human, you have skipped classes, neglected your studies, and abandoned your trials, failing in your duty as a prince. Three, you have turned against your kind, those who have served you since childhood."
"Do you still think you deserve to inherit the throne?"
Xinuo gritted his teeth, emitting a low growl, his eyes flashing with uncontrollable anger like a lion provoked.
"Deserve it or not, what does it matter? In your eyes, I'm just a toy, devoid of my thoughts, preferences, and will. All you need is a puppet molded into the likeness you desire, fitted into the prince's shell!"
Rafa furrowed his brow. "That is your duty."
Xinuo chuckled mockingly. "But I don't want this kind of duty at all."
Faced with Rafa's questioning, the resentment in his heart burst forth like a flood breaking through a dam, unstoppable. He roared with anger, drowning out all reason.
Xinuo raised his head defiantly, his resolve palpable. "Whoever wants to be this prince can go ahead, I don't care!"
His words plunged the hall into a deathly silence. The elders lowered their heads, trembling, wishing they were anywhere else, unable to bear the wrath of the king.
