The sudden fragrance and warmth that came with his approach made Mu You freeze in place, not daring to move.
Why get so close?
Yue Chu leaned in, whispering softly, "Since Dr. Jiang is focused on unlocking the virus's potential, why don't we take a different approach?"
Mu You snapped out of his daze, furrowing his brows slightly. But their goal was to use the virus to promote human evolution. If they maintained stability, wouldn't that be useless?
However, when he met Yue Chu's gentle and wise (foggy) eyes, he felt the stars spin, making him dizzy. By the time he regained consciousness, he obediently walked back into the laboratory.
His gaze sharpened as he tightly gripped the data pad in his hand, a deep and fierce expression appearing on his youthful face, contradicting his appearance.
Damn it, how did he get deceived again!
"Professor Yue."
Just as Yue Chu stepped out of the laboratory, ready to wander around, he was stopped by someone calling his name. Turning back, he saw Lan Yi, fully armed, standing behind him.
Lan Yi had a tall and slender figure, not particularly muscular, yet radiating strength. His navy blue combat suit accentuated his slender waist and long legs, complemented by black military boots, enhancing his remarkable demeanor.
The originally stern expression melted into a gentle smile upon seeing Yue Chu, exuding a romantic affection akin to the spring river adorned with peach blossoms.
He gestured for his team members to go on patrol first.
Yue Chu nodded lightly, smiling casually. "Won't this delay your work?"
Lan Yi's gaze was profound as he stared at him, the laughter in his peach blossom eyes reminiscent of sunlight filtering through leaves.
He shook his head, explaining, "No, my main task is to protect Dr. Jiang. Since Dr. Jiang entered the laboratory, I've been patrolling with the team."
Yue Chu nodded in relief and invited him to walk together.
"How long have you been protecting Dr. Jiang?" Yue Chu inquired.
Lan Yi's gaze drifted over his delicate profile, his brown eyes, so similar to Lan Yao's, deep and mysterious.
"For over three years," Lan Yi replied.
Yue Chu was slightly surprised. He hadn't realized it had been that long. He had thought their acquaintance began around the time Jiang Quan started researching the Mingzhu virus. It seemed their connection went further back than he had thought.
Seeing Yue Chu's expression, Lan Yi continued without reservation, "Actually, I've known Jiang Quan since we were kids. Probably since his uncle adopted him from the orphanage and brought him home. We used to play together occasionally."
"But he liked reading, and I liked training. Our interests diverged, and as we grew older, we drifted into our circles, with limited interaction."
Yue Chu's mind stirred slightly. Despite being childhood friends for so many years, if Lan Yi hadn't sacrificed himself in the end, perhaps their relationship would have remained unchanged.
But...
He discreetly glanced at Lan Yi. According to Xiong's introduction, Lan Yi had been silently in love with Jiang Quan, choosing to protect him quietly for various reasons.
Yue Chu clicked his tongue softly. This was not an easy thing to do. It seemed that Lan Yi truly loved Jiang Quan deeply.
Noticing Yue Chu's gaze, Lan Yi straightened his back and adjusted his profile to the most flattering angle, his smile radiant like the sun.
While men may not focus entirely on looks, attractiveness is certainly one way to captivate others.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted ahead. Piercing screams accompanied by gunshots shattered the tranquility of the research institute. The seeds of disaster hidden in the darkness were trying to break through their tough shells and grow towards the light.
Lan Yi narrowed his eyes, his smile disappearing instantly. He drew a wooden club from his waist and shielded Yue Chu behind him, like a black panther discovering an enemy, every inch of his taut muscles ready to spring into action.
His once tender peach blossom eyes were now sharp as a blade, his bloodstained figure emerging from the midst of danger, revealing a side that was far from harmless and funny as he appeared on the surface..
In a deep voice, Lan Yi said, "Professor Yue, you should hide for now. I'll go deal with this."
Yue Chu agreed but didn't follow Lan Yi's request to hide. Instead, he leisurely followed along. He wanted to see if Pandora's Box had already been opened.
The sound of wooden clubs banging continuously echoed as well-trained team members continuously attacked the escaped experimental subjects from the laboratory. However, those things were too fast, and they couldn't seem to land a hit.
Crimson blood flowed along the corridor, filling the air with a nauseating stench. Researchers in white coats scattered in panic, fleeing for their lives. Those who were even slightly slower were caught by the frenzied experimental subjects, their necks bitten through.
The sound of sharp teeth tearing flesh made one's scalp tingle. It wasn't until the experimental subjects stopped, having obtained their food, that people could see what was clinging to the walls.
Though vaguely humanoid, their evolved limbs were much stronger than those of humans. Bulging muscles, tinged with red, protruded from their bodies, and sharp claws dug deeply into the metal walls, leaving gaping holes.
Their facial features were barely discernible, with a seam splitting the face down the center. Instead of brains, mouths filled with sharp teeth and tongues covered in spikes were revealed.
Meanwhile, the black eyeballs hanging on either side swiveled around, seemingly searching for their next prey.
Yue Chu observed the appearance of the experimental subjects carefully. This was probably the prototype of a zombie. His gaze swept over several researchers who had lost flesh but had managed to escape, his face showing a moment of deep contemplation.
