Guards POV.

"Damn this blizzard!!", I yell "Why did we have to build a stupid fort here, in these stupid mountains!"

I shake as I sit on this guard post, wondering every day as to why did we need to build a fort up here in these mountains. I know we need to watch and guard our borders, but who in their right mind would want to move an army through these mountains but that is what our stupid commanders and generals want and so here we are. The small and insignificant foot soldier freezing up just so that we can guard here.

"Stop complaining Heron," a voice says behind me, "how don't you ever get tired of complaining?"

"How can I not complain Marcus, it is a stupid location and plus, it is the only thing you are able to do here to pass the time." I say with some annoyance.

"Well others don't complain as much as you do, they do other stuff to pass the time, you should maybe join them.", Marcus says as he comes up beside me, ready to take my shift.

"Ha, join those drunkards," I let out a snicker, "all they do is drink and gamble and fight. Thanks but NO, I would rather freeze to death than listen to their stories and vulgar speeches."

I never plan to join them, they aren't a pleasant bunch to be around, all they do is drink until they pass out or until a fight breaks out. Once drunk all they talk is how they want to have fun with women and most of them talk behind our healers back as to how much they would get in bed with her. I mean, she is damn beautiful, a elf, her name is Euriele, blonde hair, green eyes and a soothing voice. She might be the only decent being in here apart from Marcus, she is sweet and caring and I feel sorry for her. Such talent wasted on taking care of these drunks and being hit on by almost everybody. I still wonder why was she sent here, she could have been sent somewhere else, why this place of all.

"It seems that the blizzard is calming down, " Marcus speaks knocking me out of my thoughts, "it seems luck is on my side. Hahahaha... You really are unlucky."

"Damn you, you always get shit like this, how come I never get to guard when the weather is semi nice." I sigh in frustration, "Still, since I don't plan on going into the barracks anytime soon I might just as well stay with you."

"Suit yourself, I appreciate it though, having some company help pass the time." he says as he looks out into the horizon, "One thing is for sure, I will never get tired of this view, If I were a painter I would paint every damn day."

I say: "You told that you wanted to become one, but what happened, why didn't you. Didn't have enough coin?"

He lets out a sigh, "No, coin wasn't the problem. It was my mother, she was sick and we needed every coin that we could get. So I had to work and never really had the time to focus on the thing and time flew quick I joined the army and that is where all hope for painting ended."

"Damn, sorry man, didn't mean to make you sad," I say while putting a hand on his shoulder, "How is she?"

"Actually, really good, own a shop and writes me letter quite often and sends me some food from time to time. Her sister is helping her out," he turns to face me "speaking of sister, how is your little angel"

"Really good!" I say with a smile "She enrolled into the Braveheart academy to become a mage and sends me letter saying she made some new friends."

I look out into the mountains, just thinking about her makes me smile. I am lucky to have a sister like her, but also sad that I can't visit her. She was always skilled with magic, especially with fire, and we always knew that she would be a mage. But to enroll into the Braveheart academy means she is really talented, more so than we thought. Only the best enroll there and the most promising, it is like a noble title to enroll there, and it doesn't care if you are of noble, royal or simple commoner blood, if you are talented you can join. As I keep looking out I spot a figure walking towards us.
