Chapter 14: The TA's Secret

"Um, what just happened?" Liam asked, confused. Unlike many of his previous questions for clarification, this one actually echoed Teddy's thoughts.

"Uh, sorry about that," Don said. "You see, Principal Announcer assigned me to be a TA for your Professor because he felt that a friendlier presence needed to be there to mitigate his... well, you've had Professor Four for two days already. You already probably know they're not the friendliest."

"Understatement of the year," Teddy heard Ellie mutter from in front of her, which she could only agree with. However, Don seemed to either not hear this, or simply chose to ignore it."

"Anyways, your teacher and I were never on the best terms," the teacher's assistant continued. "He was angry that the principal assigned a TA to him in the first place and only resented me more once he realized that I would stand up for his students when he was too harsh with punishments. Like what happened just now. I tried to tell the principal this wasn't working out but..." During that last sentence, Don seemed to be growing increasingly frustrated, before sighing and calming down. "I think today was the last straw for your professor."

Wow, this school is very dysfunctional, Teddy thought. If it wasn't for the friends I have here, I would regret going to this school. ...Well, okay, to be honest, I still kind of do. Not enough to actually switch schools, though.

Teddy was soon taken out of her thoughts about the school by Lila suddenly asking, "What was the Professor talking about when he said you had a secret?"

"Nobody cares," Felicity commented from the front, glaring daggers at the other girl, who merely glared back with equal venom.

"I don't know. That secret does sound kind of interesting," Stefan mused.

Felicity gaped at him. "Stefan!" she scolded.

"What?"

"You're supposed to disagree with Lila!"

"Oh, right," Stefan said, before joining Felicity in glaring at Lila. "I mean, yeah, nobody cares." The girl merely rolled her eyes at him.

"Whatever," she said, before turning back to Don. "So what is your secret?"

...As if he's just going to tell you if you ask him, Teddy thought sarcastically.

Indeed, Don was unsurprisingly unwilling to share his secret. "Nothing!" he said hastily, before changing the subject as he took out a clipboard and a pen. "Anyway, let's do attendance! Liam Blitz?"

"Uh here?" Liam answered, putting a hand up. "But I'd like you to clarify-"

Unfortunately, Don interrupted him by calling the next name. "Bella Campana?"

"Here!" Bella responded as she put up a hand. "But it's rude to interrupt, you know-"

"Sawyer Carpenter?"

"Here!" Sawyer said as she raised her hand. She didn't say anything else though, probably realizing that she would be interrupted if she did.

You're not doing a good job of making yourself seem less suspicious, Teddy thought to herself as Don continued taking attendance speedily. If anything, you're probably making everyone even more curious about your secret. At the very least, you're making me more curious. Despite this, she mainly focused on typing what she wanted to say into her AAC app. She decided on going for a simple message without trying to pry more into Don's secret, since it was clearly going nowhere.
