months later
Soap McTavish
It was two o'clock in the morning. I was on the terrace of my room with a cigarette in my hand. It was lit up but my gaze was too lost in the night to take a drag. For my luck or misfortune, the sound of two people fighting not far away brought me back from my little astral trip. Ghost and ______ , my best friend and sister, had this tendency of fighting every now and then at the least fortunate hours. No matter how accustomed I was to those sudden screams at that hour, I put on my headphones and turned up the volume as much as I could. That blow back to reality made me bring the cigarette to my lips and inhale some of the smoke, leave it in my lungs for a while and expel it slowly to notice the effect as quickly as possible.
"...Well, I look like a fucking walking corpse, girl
Say the words, "R.I.P." 'cause
My tolerance is going up
And I'm getting numb to the feeling, yeah
And I've been abusing drugs
I'm getting numb to the feeling, yeah..."The music became quite specific at that time of the morning but, the truth is, from time to time, understanding your feelings through music was somewhat therapeutic.
The voices were getting louder and more annoying each second, so much so that I finished my cigarette and went down to the kitchen to say a couple of things to those bastards. Before entering, I decided to listen to the conversation through the door.—Are you fucking kidding me?! — she screamed — after all this bullshit you have the NERVE to blame me?
—What bullshit? Covering your mistakes?! — the lieutenant responded with the same tone.
Seriously? They were still arguing over something that had happened over a month ago. They've been especially angry at each other since I came back from my mission and, honestly, were getting on my nerves.
—My only mistake was thinking you actually changed— she said almost shouting. She didn't even notice I was in the same room as them— you're still the same asshole I met ten years ago.
—Oh, so I'm the asshole for saving your life?— he let out an ironic chuckle— you know, maybe I should've let you die that night.
—You did not just say that.
—Fuck yea I did.
I turned to look at my sister, who still didn't know I was there, to try to figure out what they were talking about. Her whole body was tense, hands tightened into fists and her gaze was full of hate and contempt. Some seconds after, in that extremely uncomfortable silence, she opened her mouth to argue back.
—Then kill me.
None of us expected that. I decided it was time for me to join the conversation. I then stood between Ghost's shocked face and Bubble's seriousness.
—I think you two have talked enough for today, let's just call it a night.
—No, McTavish, let her talk— Ghost replied.
That was the first time he called me by my surname, I've always been "Soap" to him. He was really angry, that's for sure.
—And what? Let you two kill each other? Not on my watch— I argued back.
—If the brat wants me to kill her I will— he said just before throwing all the weapons he had on him to the ground— what do you say, princess? 1vs1?
—You're fucking on, Lieutenant— she answered as she copied his actions.
—Guys, stop, you're behaving like little kids.
—The only little one here is your cunt of a sister.
—Ghost, I'm not letting you talk to her like that— I now said with a more serious tone.
—Suck it, Lieutenant, even your best friend disagrees with you.
—Both of you, shut up! — I shouted.
Even I was surprised with my own tone. It wasn't too loud of a scream but it most definitely was firm and even a bit intimidating. Both of them looked at me with a mixture of annoyment, anger and surprise. I wasn't going to have any of their childish attitudes any more. Fuck, it was two thirty AM and they, surprisingly, had the energy to argue and even dare each other to a fight?! I was done with them, both.
—If you guys wanna fight like two-year-old babies, fine. See if I care! — I sighed — I'm so done with your stupid fights. You hate each other, ok, but that doesn't give you a fucking reason to act like this.
Silence. All there was in that room was silence. I sighed once more before walking out of the room.
—If you're gonna keep this nonsense up, at least be quiet and let the rest of us sleep. You're not the only ones un this shitty place.
—It'd be less shitty if your dumbass bestfriend wasn't here.
I raised my hands up as a sign of defeat and headed back upstairs.
With another cigarret lit up and Lil Peep playing out loud, I spent uncountable minutes just hearing the two persons I loved the most argue.«You're a cunt»
«I hate you»
«You don't deserve to be alive»
«You can't do shit»—Why the fuck do you even hate me, Simon? I haven't done a single thing to you— I could hear my sister scream.
—I don't know, maybe because the only thing that we have in common is that our parents didn't want to know shit about us!? — he let out.
Silence. That was all there was.
It was almost like they died.
