MAISIE COULDN'T SLEEP
She had always had trouble dozing off, but following the events of the second titan war, sleep seemed more impossible to obtain than usual. It felt as though she was fighting an internal battle to try and force herself to sleep. Whether her own mind forced her to stay awake in fear or she was cursed by the god known as Hypnos, she didn't know. All Maisie knew was she was wide awake in cabin 16 at promptly 3:45 am.
Knowing there was no use to continue her effort, She slowly crawled out of her bed and grabbed her shoes, careful to not wake up her half brother, Donovan Boyd, who's messy raven hair could be seen poking out from under his covers. The nemesis cabin has always been empty. She only has one half sibling, and she likes it that way. They don't interact much, but when Maisie had night terrors when she was younger, she would always find a snickers bar (her favorite treat) placed on top of her nightstand the next morning.
Donovan was freshly 18, and planned to leave after this summer to pursue a career in fashion since his fashion sense rivaled that of the whole Aphrodite cabin. Meaning Maisie was left the wonderful burden of head counselor. Maisie was fearful, but she would never show it. She couldn't blame him for wanting to leave; she yearned for the same as him.
There wasn't much keeping her at camp half-blood. She had only made two acquaintances out of some newcomers to camp.
Coralline Watts, better known as Cora, is a very artistic and talented member of the Demeter cabin. She had arrived at camp half-blood almost a month after the war had officially ended, leaving her with a not so warm welcome. Unbothered by this, she seemed to search for the person who wanted to be left alone the most, and lucky for her, that happened to be Maisie. Now the cherry-cola haired girl never seems to leave her alone, attached to her like a stray dog. But, Maisie had to admit, it was nice to see somebody try and care for her.
Then there was Parker Murphy. Man was he annoying. He showed up to camp a few weeks ago and Maisie immediately knew he was up to no good. His sly grin and mischievous looking hazel eyes spelt nothing but trouble for Maisie Elliot, and it came as no surprise to her when he was claimed by his godly parent Hermes. Unbeknownst to Maisie, Cora had gone out of her way to befriend the new boy, continuing to drag him along with her as she attempted to befriend the moody teenager of cabin 16. Maisie attempted to evade their persistence, but in the end she was no match for the pestering of Parker Murphy.
As she silently opened the door of cabin 16, she was greeted with a swift cold breeze. Closing the door behind her, she trudged down the pathways towards the woods. Straying clear from the cleaning harpies, Maisie expertly made her way down to the tree line and darted in. Walking in the woods gave her a sense of tranquility. She felt like she could leave all her problems behind her the second she stepped foot in the lavish woods that surround the place she wished she thought of as home. That word left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Most campers would stear clear of the woods, worried of the danger and monsters that lurk within. Only somebody out of their mind would choose to go in alone at an ungodly hour of the night. Good thing Maisie was never in her right mind.
She reached a clearing where trees seemed to loom forward to form a circle. Maisie had stolen a few training dummies and targets with the help of a certain Hermes thief, and set them on one side of the circle. The targets had too many holes and were beginning to rip at the seams, while the dummies had large forearm length cuts all over their bodies with one even being decapitated.
Maisie came out here a lot to clear her head. It was a good way to rid the anger that seemed to always boil inside of her. Somedays she wondered if she had been claimed by the wrong parent. Ares had always seemed like a better fit for her, but she hadn't always been this angry.
Pressing the small button on the side of her silver brass knuckles she always wore, they began to dissolve and form a large double sided battle axe, made from celestial bronze with a handle of pure steel. When fully upright, it was about 6 inches taller than her 5ft 6in body. Some campers saw it as weird because she carried a 6ft long battle axe, but in her defense, it looked super cool.
She spent the rest of the early hours of the morning continuing to slice and stab at the dummies. After deciding she had enough, she headed back to take a quick shower and change her clothes before heading down to breakfast, but something felt different about today. Something was going to change. Things have gotten weird ever since Percy Jackson suddenly disappeared into thin air, and the whole camp seems on edge. All Maisie knew is she wanted no part in it at all.
