"And... where are your documents?" Onceler said, folding his arms. The two brothers behind Onceler grinned at each other while staring directly at me, as if they were making fun of me while I was in the middle of a bad situation.
"Um..." I flinched.
"I apologize, Mr. Onceler. I don't have them at the moment, but..." I was about to say something, but the twins kept distracting me with their laughter as I glared at them.
"I assure y-" I was cut off while Brett imitated every movement I made in front of Chett.
"That-" I was interrupted again.
Onceler looked at them angrily. "Brett, Chett, can't you see I'm in the middle of something important here?" Onceler spoke, making the brothers clear their throats, trying to stop their laughter, and turned his head back to me. "Continue. Don't waste my time," he said, tapping his feet on the floor.
I tried to keep my head cool and act mature.
"Right, okay..." My heart pounded nervously as I repeated myself, trying not to get clouded by my thoughts because of Onceler's looks.
"I don't have them at the moment, but I can assure you that I work hard and that I am capable of handling responsibilities you seek in an employee," I said as my hands were shaking.
Onceler raised his eyebrow in disbelief. "Really? And you expect me to believe that, after the disaster you've caused? Standing there with the broom in your hand. You think I'm going to believe you're here for a job?"
"Y-Yes, I'm a hard worker. I'm dedicated to this job and I'm really good at cleaning. I can clean this mess in no time," I gestured towards the shattered vases and debris and looked at him with sincerity.
"Prove it," he said with a stern voice, resting his other hand on his hip.
"Yes! I won't disappoint you, I promised," I said confidently and tied my hair as I'm getting prepared.
Onceler surveyed the room filled with chaos. "Very well, but if you don't impress me, you're out the door," he said, pointing at the door.
I nodded and immediately set to work, my movements quick and efficient. With a newfound resolve, I rolled up my sleeves, organized the scattered mess, and picked up the broken pieces. I swept the broken glass into a dustpan, my heart pounding with every movement, nervous if I might mess up. The sound of the shattered glass on the floor caused me to cringe, but I continued, focusing on the task at hand, determined to prove myself. As I worked, I could feel the tension between me and Onceler; his gaze never leaving me, watching every movement I make while we stole each other's glances, making my heart flutter, but I kept my head down; the silence was too strong.
Onceler watched me as he stepped closer, checking the dust in his hands on the desk. His face turned serious. "Well, then let's keep this professional."
I was caught off guard by his rejection but quickly straightened up, masking my disappointment.
"You've got potential" he said, trying to hide his amusement but keeping a straight face yet intimidating.
"But don't let it go to your head. This isn't a playground."My eyes lit up with hope; a smile crept on my face. "Really?!"
"I have a feeling we'll be seeing each other more often. I expect you to be prepared are you ready for the challenge?"
