After they had stood in the room last night, indecisively looking back and forth between the mattress and the bed, Yoongi had taken the mattress for the time being because 'he was the guest after all' and Jimin had grumpily crawled into bed, Yoongi had crawled into bed with Jimin at night after all. Who were they kidding? Nobody would come in and make a fuss. After all, Jimin was an adult.
Well, as far as his mum was concerned, he would always be her son and so she burst into the room the next morning with a cheerful smile.
Yoongi, who had woken up to the click of the door opening, blinked confusedly at Mrs Park through sleepy eyes and then gently shook Jimin awake.
"Breakfast is ready. Come downstairs, you can get ready after you've eaten. We still want to pick out the tree in the light."
Her tone didn't allow for any argument, but it was cheerful nonetheless. She eyed them both with a warm smile and then disappeared from the room without another comment.
Jimin, who had been wide awake with shock as soon as he had heard his mother's voice, sat upright in bed and looked at Yoongi in panic, who was now slowly, still sleepily, struggling out of the duvet.
He leant down to Jimin and gave him a quick kiss on the lips.
"Don't look like that. She didn't catch us doing something forbidden. Besides, she didn't seem to mind."
He stretched extensively and yawned.
"You have no idea. My mum is at least as scary when she's excited about something. Especially when she senses something she can grill you about."
With a resigned sigh, Jimin also swung his legs out of bed.
"We can change after breakfast. There'll only be trouble if we keep her waiting."
Yoongi, who was about to pull his sleep shirt over his head, let go of the hem and nodded understandingly.
Together, they shuffled into the dining room, where the table was already set with all kinds of delicacies. It smelled deliciously of warm bread, mixed with the scent of scented Christmas candles perched on an Advent wreath in the centre of the table.
Just as they dropped into their chairs, Jimin's little brother Jihyun came shuffling in and greeted them with a sleepy 'Morning'. Jimin's father looked up from his newspaper and nodded to them all before putting it away as Jimin's mum came out of the kitchen with the warm bread rolls.
"What's up for today?"
Jimin asked as he took a roll from the basket.
"After breakfast, we'll get ready and then go tree shopping. Experience has shown that it always takes a while..."
Mrs Park gave Jimin and Jihyun a meaningful look.
"So we'll probably eat a hot dog and drink a mulled wine in the courtyard. It depends. When do you have to go back?"
"Unfortunately, we have to go back tonight, as Yoongi is currently working in social services and has to leave tomorrow morning."
"Ah yes, that's right. How do you like it there, Yoongi?"
~
"This is quite a big courtyard. Do you cut the trees here yourself?"
Yoongi looked around with interest. They had parked in a snow-covered sandy car park in the middle of a low forest. In front of them was a small wooden hut with a scale attached to a beam at the front, on which the prices for the corresponding tree height were marked.
