The Past

Being raised by a single parent was strange, given that it was her aunt, Blair tied her best to be smart kid. She was polite, she also was independent. Blair was six when she would go off on her own to pick herbs by herself, and today was no different, her aunt had a patient and older women and her husband who brought her, and Blair wanted to be useful so she offered to pick the herbs. She was about to pick one when the older man stopped her.

"That one's poisonous." The older man said kneeling next to her.

"Oh, I guess I still don't know my plants well." Blair said.

"Well, what plants are you looking for?" The man asked. Blair handed him a book that had drawings of the plants.

"Oh, I see, some plants look like same but if you look closely at the edges you can tell the difference." The man informed.

"You sure know a lot, are you a doctor? And if your a doctor why are you at my aunts?" Blair asked.

"No, my mother was, she taught me everything I know."

"Was?"

"She passed when I was a boy, but I still remember everything she taught me"

"Oh, I'm sorry, I know what it's like to lose a mother." Blair said.

"Yeah,?"

"Yeah my aunt told me my mama died giving me life, I'm named after her you know." Blair said. The man gave her a sad look. "Well, I'm sorry to hear that," Ben and Blair walked back to the home. They walked back in.

"Thank you Benjamin." Vanessa thanked as Blair gave her the plants which she took to the table.

"Best be careful with that one, she almost grabbed the wrong plant."

"I told you to be cautious, next time I'll go with you." Vanessa said. "Blair what do we say?'

"Thank you Benjamin." Blair said.

"Go play." Blair disappeared into the home, and Vanessa thanked Benjamin again. "It's not a problem, she's a good kid."

"She is, I've tried my best I moved to this village to be a healer not a mother, but then her mother died, it's difficult managing raising her and doing my job. . .I don't even know why I'm telling you an of this." Vanessa sighed.

"Even parents get stressed, if you ever need help our house is jut across the way." Benjamin spoke.

"Do you and your wife have children?"

"We had a daughter she was around your girls age when fever took her."

"I'm sorry."

"It was many years ago. But once she gets older it'll be more difficult to do everything yourself." Benjamin said.

"Thank you, I appreciate it." Vanessa thanked and Benjamin and his wife went home.
