Shana's new job was demanding, but she was thriving. She loved the challenges, the creativity, the sense of purpose. But she also knew that it was important to maintain a healthy balance.
Her pottery classes had been a source of relaxation and creativity, but she’d been finding it difficult to make time for them with her new schedule. She missed the feel of the cool clay, the rhythm of the potter’s wheel, the sense of accomplishment that came with creating something with her own hands.
She decided to look for a new hobby, something that would fit into her busy schedule, something that would help her stay physically and mentally fit.
She started by taking a yoga class, enjoying the feeling of stretching and strengthening her body, the mindfulness and the sense of calm that it brought. But she found that she craved something more physical, something more challenging.
So, she decided to join a gym.
She found a gym near her apartment, a bright and modern facility with a friendly atmosphere and a wide range of classes. She started by attending a few group fitness classes, enjoying the energy and the motivation of working out with others. She tried spinning, Zumba, and kickboxing, finding that each class offered a unique challenge and a different type of reward.
She also began lifting weights, enjoying the feeling of strength and empowerment that came with building muscle. She started to see changes in her body, feeling stronger, more toned, more confident.
She was surprised by how much she enjoyed working out. It wasn’t just about physical fitness, it was about mental clarity, stress relief, and a sense of accomplishment. It was a way to challenge herself, to push her limits, to feel alive.
Shana was in the middle of her workout, pumped up and focused, when she felt a presence beside her. She glanced over and saw a guy, tall and muscular, wearing a tight tank top and gym shorts.
He had a confident, almost cocky swagger, and he was eyeing her with a look that made her skin crawl.
“You know, you look really good for someone who’s been working out for, like, ever,” he said, his voice a little too loud and a little too cocky.
Shana frowned, not impressed. She didn’t appreciate the unsolicited comment, especially from someone she didn’t know. “Thanks,” she said, keeping her voice neutral, “but I’m not here to make friends.”
“Well, you’re making a friend now,” he said, his grin widening. “I’m Shawn. What’s your name?”
“That’s not going to happen,” Shana said, turning back to her workout. “And I’m not interested in talking.”
“Come on, don’t be like that,” Shawn said, his tone a little more insistent. “It’s just a friendly gesture. I’m new here, and I’m looking for a workout buddy. You seem pretty fit, you know, for a girl.”
Shana couldn’t believe her ears. She turned back to face him, her eyes narrowed. “Seriously? You’re going to comment on my fitness level and then call me ‘fit for a girl?’ Do you ever stop to think before you speak?”
Shawn’s smile faltered. He seemed surprised by her reaction. “Whoa, easy there, tiger. I was just trying to be friendly.”
“Well, you’re failing miserably,” Shana said, turning back to her workout. “And I’m not interested in being your workout buddy. So, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to finish my workout in peace.”
Shawn looked at her for a moment, his expression a mixture of confusion and irritation. He muttered something under his breath, but he finally backed away, leaving Shana alone.
She finished her workout, her frustration building with each passing minute. She didn’t understand why some guys felt the need to make inappropriate comments to women, especially when they were trying to focus on their workouts.
She decided to avoid the area where she’d encountered Shawn, hoping that she wouldn’t run into him again. She knew that she was probably overreacting, but she just found him incredibly annoying.
