Newt's POV
I wasn't wrong when I had said I was in for some tough farm work and a lot of time watching the plants grow. When I had first arrived, there was an entire section of planting to be done that Zart had me do as he collected seeds from the crops he had set out to dry a few days ago. After I had spent way over an hour on farming the ground and planting, Zart had me water the plants. Then, once I thought I had finished, Zart told me to watch the plants like some kind of damn babysitter. As second in command, it's my job to help out with everything, but today just felt off, even though I've done gardening before.
As I continued to watch the tomatoes I had just planted, my eyes began to wander away from them and to the rest of the Glade. Many of the Gladers were still busy with work and I just watched them since there was nothing better to do than watching the Tomatoes. As I continued to watch, I suddenly spotted Alby and the Greenie walking across the grassy Glade. I had been wondering where Alby had been the whole time I was gardening and had even been keeping an eye out for him specifically.
I had had enough with Zart's tomatoes and walked across the field to where Alby and the Greenie were walking. Alby turnedaround as he heard me approach.
"There you are Alby," I said, a smile on my face.
Alby smiled back at me then looked back at the Greenie, "Green Bean, meet Newt." he said, as I took the Greenie's hand and shook it. "He's in charge when I'm not around."
I chuckled, "Well it's a good thing you're always around then." I said, then turned my attention back to the newbie, "That was some epic dash you had earlier. You had me thinking for a sec that you had the chops to be a Runner until you face planted. It was great."
Alby chuckled at the boy's failed attempt of escaping, then the Greenie asked a question, "What's a Runner?"
Alby suddenly stopped chuckling and softly spoke to me so that the Greenie couldn't hear, "Do me a favor and go find Chuck."
I nodded, glad I could finally get away from Zart's tomatoes, "Yeah," I said, then walked off to go and find Chuck.
Y/N's POV
Chuck and I spent hours cleaning up the Glade. When we were finally finished, I felt a huge sense of relief as we started packing up all of our cleaning supplies.
As we packed, I suddenly heard someone approach us from behind. When I turned around, I saw it was Newt, "Hey, Newt!" I called.
He smiled as he reached us, "How have you two been?"
Chuck grinned, "Great!"
I nodded, "Yeah, we're just finishing up."
"I'm so excited for the bonfire gathering tonight," commented Chuck, switching the topic.
"Oh, I completely forgot about that... must have been a little too caught up today." I said.
Newt nodded, smiling, "Yeah, we were all a bit more busy than usual today."
"By the way, did Minho come back yet?" I asked, knowing it was late, "I think I missed him and the others come back."
"They already came back and gave Alby the report," said Newt, who suddenly remembered something. "Speaking of Alby, he wants to see you, Chuck. Probably needs a hand with that new Greenie."
Chuck lit up, "Really?" he asked, getting excited.
Newt nodded, "Yeah-"
"Where is Alby, by the way." said Chuck, slightly cutting off Newt.
I chuckled then Newt replied, "Last I saw of him was near the farms."
"Alright, thanks Newt!" exclaimed Chuck, as he began to jog off in the direction of the farms. Then, before he got out of ear shot he added one last thing, "See you two tonight!"
Newt and I watched him as he ran and once Chuck had gotten a considerable distance away, Newt and I exchanged a knowing glance. "Chuck is always so reliable, isn't he?" I remarked with a smile.
Newt chuckled in agreement, "He certainly is." He said, then changed the subject, "I should probably head off now before Zart notices that I left."
I nodded in understanding yet laughed at the same time, "Guessing he's making you watch the plants now."
Newt sighed, "You know it."
All I did was smile, "Well have fun doing that, Newt and I'll see you tonight."
Newt began to walk off in the direction of the farms just like Chuck had done, "See you later." he called.
* * *
Some time had passed and I was already neck high in chores again. As I tackled them, my mind started to drift and I found myself thinking about the Greenie. It had suddenly dawned on me that I had only ever seen him from afar, never actually meeting him in person. I made a mental note to remember this for the next time our paths crossed.
As I continued doing my chores, I spotted Minho and Ben arriving from their trip into the Maze. I watched them and spotted Chuck and the Greenie right next to them. Curiosity got me and I just kept watching Chuck and Green Bean. As I kept watching, the Greenie started getting very close to the Maze entrance. Chuck continued to block him from going any nearer as the boy kept pressing.
He's getting too close for my comfort, I thought to myself. As I began to walk over to them, the Greenie was suddenly tackled by Gally.
I suddenly broke off into a sprint to get to the scene happening between the two boys. Other Gladers spotted what was happening too and we all started running towards them. The Greenie started getting ramped up and looked like he was ready to fight Gally. Reasonable since Gally had just tackled him to the ground.
"Calm down, Greenie," said Gally, as the two of them stood face to face.
The Greenie turned away from Gally and to the rest of us who had just begun to arrive at the situation. "What the hell is wrong with you guys?" the Greenie questioned, his voice practically a yell.
"Calm down, Green Bean," I said, putting my hands in front of me like I was trying to tame a wild beast.
The Greenie looked at me curiously, surprised that there was even a girl in the Glade, then I heard Newt's voice next to me. "Just calm down, alright?" he said, trying to smooth out the scene.
"Why won't you just tell me what's out there?" he asked, still upset as he pointed towards the Maze.
Alby began to approach the Greenie carefully, "We're just trying to protect you, man."
He shook his head, "No, why can't you just tell me what's out there?" He said, "Just let me leave."
"We can't-" began Alby, but he was abruptly cut off by the Greenie.
"Why?" he said, his voice still rising, "What's out there-"
The Greenie was suddenly cut off by a loud growl coming from within the Maze, causing all of us to go silent. Then, there was a gust of wind that blew into our faces, along with more growls of the Grievers ringing in our ears.
I looked at the Greenie's face and it was practically pale as he looked into the Maze as the door began to close. We all watched them close in silence as more sounds from the Maze were present. Then, the door thankfully closed, cutting off the terrible growls of the Grievers.
"The hell..." said the Greenie under his breath.
Gally walked from behind him, "Next time, Greenie." he said, his voice grim, "I'm going to let you leave."
After saying that, Gally walked away and everyone else began to slowly disperse. Alby walked up to the Greenie before leaving, "Welcome to the Glade." He said, then walked off with everyone else.
