I sat up on my hammock, unable to sleep when I know that they're in the Maze and will most likely never come back, especially since the last time I saw them continues to play in my head. Alby was unconscious, Minho was exhausted, Thomas was an idiot for running in there like that, and Y/N... I just can't believe it.
"Hey, Newt," I heard Gally call from behind me.
I turned around to see Gally walk under the canopy as he made his way towards me through the rest of the Gladers who were sitting around their hammocks like me. We're all trying to find a way to digest what had happened earlier.
I said nothing as I watched him approach me, his footsteps muffled by the dirt filled ground. Gally's expression was a mix of frustration and concern, which I haven't seen in a while. He stopped a few feet away, crossing his arms over his chest.
"You okay?" he asked, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
I shrugged, my gaze turning towards the dark figure of the Maze looming in the distance. Looking at it only made me think of her for some reason. "How can I be okay?" I said flatly, my muscles aching.
Gally shrugged, "Fair," he said, "None of us are okay, especially since we just lost four of our Gladers without warning."
"There's still a chance," I insisted, although Gally gave me a long, doubtful look.
"Still a chance?" he echoed, his voice filled with disbelief. "You really think they're going to make it? Or that we somehow find their remains?"
"I'm not naive, Gally," I told him, my brows frowned, "That's why I'm preparing myself for the worst but that doesn't mean they're gone just yet."
Gally sighed, running his hand through his hair, "Really Newt?" he said, "What's happened to you?"
I nodded, "I could say the same about you," I replied, memories flooding my mind. I thought of the old Gally—the one who used to laugh all the time, who had inspired us to fight against the odds. The Gally who had earned all of us his trust and friendship. After George's death, Gally had locked himself away from all of us, as if he were a switch.
Gally fell silent, staring at me as if he could read the thoughts swirling in my mind. Then after a few seconds of silence, he spoke, "Good luck," he said as he turned around and walked out, weaving between hammocks and Gladers, most who were already able to sleep.
I sighed once Gally was out of sight and laid down on my hammock, which swung back and forth as I did so. And again, I wasn't able to fall asleep, their faces burned into my mind no matter how hard I tried.
I groaned quietly in frustration, wanting to fall asleep but could only think that it was my fault that Y/N and Thomas decided to run into the Maze like that. Even though I tried to stop them, I just wasn't fast enough to stop both of them. And Alby and Minho are out there with them.
I couldn't lay in my hammock anymore with so many thoughts in my mind, so I got myself off of it and walked out towards the center of the Glade.
It was a nice, quiet night, and the only thing I could hear was the grass swaying back and forth in the wind. The moon hung low, casting a soft glow across the landscape around me, giving off a comfortable feeling. I walked around in silence for a while until I suddenly spotted Chuck sitting in the dark on a log next to the bonfire we had recently had. I walked over to him.
He turned his head around as he heard me approach, "Hey," he said softly, as I sat down next to him.
"Couldn't sleep either?" I asked him, and he nodded in reply, looking up at the sky that was filled with more stars than I could even count.
"Too much is on my mind," he said, then looked back over at me, the ghost of a forced grin on his face, "You too?"
I nodded, "Yeah," I simply replied.
Chuck also nodded, "Yeah." he said, the words almost drifting through the silence like an echo.
After that, we both just sat in silence and looked up into the sky, the world around us was hushed, save for the gentle rustling of leaves as a soft breeze blew again. It was one of those rare nights where time seemed to stand still, even with all of the chaos going on around us.
As we were finally calmed, we both suddenly heard the sound of Grievers in the Maze, their sounds an everlasting reminder. I sighed, the pain of knowing they're all out there returning to me. Chuck felt it too.
"They're going to make it," Chuck said firmly, but I could hear all of the doubt behind his words.
I nodded, although also doubting the chances of them all surviving, which seemed to grow within every second that passed. "I hope so, I really hope so Chuck."
