As the hours passed, the tension in the room started to ease. At first, the Haitani brothers kept their distance, watching me carefully. But eventually, they started talking... casual things, like Ran teasing Rindou about his music taste or Rindou complaining about Ran’s endless smirking.
They asked me questions too. Ran leaned back in his chair, spinning his cane. "So, how’d someone like you end up tied to Toman?"
At first, I avoided their questions, keeping my answers short. But as time went on, it felt harder to stay cold. They didn’t act as ruthless as I’d expected. Rindou even handed me a bottle of water after a while. "Here, you probably need this"
I took it hesitantly. "Thanks"
"Don’t mention it" He said with a shrug, relaxing against the couch.
Their banter was strange..lighthearted, almost like they weren’t holding me hostage at all. At one point, Ran looked at me with a sly grin. "You know, you’re not bad company. You might even grow on us"
"Great. Like a stray cat?" I shot back.
"Nah," Rindou said, smirking. "More like a friend" That's crazy holy sh!t
It was bizarre. Somehow, despite everything, we were talking, joking even. As much as I felt overjoyed to be talking with the Haitani brothers, for people who have unhesitantly beat up Mitsuya... I don't know what to feel about it.
"Going back," Ran began, spinning his cane as he leaned back lazily, "you really walked into our streets looking for Mitsuya? Gotta say, that’s bold. Or maybe just stupid"
I glared at him. "I didn’t exactly plan to run into you two. It was accidental, okay? I heard your men were messing with my friends..."
Rindou chuckled from his spot on the couch. "Yeah, well, life’s full of surprises. Still, I gotta admit, you’re not like most of the people we deal with. No crying, no screaming, just sitting there"
"What do you want me to do? Beg?" I replied, earning a laugh from the older brother.
"Nah, not you. You’re too proud for that. I can see why Toman might keep someone like you around"
I froze, their words suddenly hitting a nerve. "And what’s that supposed to mean?"
Rindou smirked, tilting his head. "Relax little bird. We’re just saying you’ve got a strong mind. It’s kinda refreshing"
The casual banter felt unreal, considering everything I’d heard about the Haitani brothers. They were supposed to be ruthless, brutal, they’d beaten Mitsuya half to death not long ago. And yet here they were, almost... friendly? It didn’t make sense.
I couldn’t help myself. "You’re surprisingly calm for guys who have no problem beating someone unconscious. What’s the deal? You’re not exactly acting like the monsters people say you are"
Ran paused, then leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees. "Oh, we can be monsters," he said, his voice low but still playful. "Beating people wasn’t for fun, it was business. And believe me, if you gave us a reason, we wouldn’t hesitate"
"But you?" Rindou added, shrugging. "You haven’t given us a reason. Yet"
There was an honesty to their words that sent a chill down my spine. They weren’t being kind, they just didn’t see me as a threat. Still, something in their demeanor felt genuine, like they weren’t putting on a show anymore.
I crossed my arms, trying to keep my voice steady. "So what now? You’re just going to sit here and chat with me until Toman shows up?"
Ran smirked, leaning back in his chair. "Maybe. Or maybe we’re just enjoying the company"
