Yn

By the time school let out, I was ready to escape the endless whispers and stolen glances. Being Billy’s sister came with its own set of complications. People looked at me differently today, like I might somehow know more than I was letting on just because Parker’s organs were left in our mailbox.

Outside, the parking lot buzzed with conversation. Groups of students huddled together, their voices low but urgent. I couldn’t avoid the curious stares that followed me as I walked to my car.

“Hey, Yn!” a voice called out.

I turned, already bracing myself. Randy jogged toward me, his expression somewhere between concern and curiosity.

“Hey,” he said, stopping just short of my car. “You okay?”

I frowned, unsure how to answer. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

Randy gestured vaguely, his hand cutting through the air. “I mean, you know…everything that’s been going on. First Casey and Steve, now Parker. And, uh, the mailbox thing.”

I sighed, crossing my arms. “What about it, Randy?”

He hesitated, glancing around before leaning in slightly. “Look, I know you and Billy don’t exactly see eye to eye on everything, but…you don’t think he’s acting weird, do you?”

I blinked, caught off guard. “Weird? Billy?”

Randy shrugged, his gaze darting toward the group of students hanging by the steps. “I don’t know. It’s just…when crazy stuff happens in this town, it’s always good to keep an eye on the people closest to you.”

His words sent a chill down my spine, but I forced a laugh. “Randy, you watch too many movies.”

“Movies reflect real life, Yn,” he shot back, his tone sharper than usual. “Sometimes more than people want to admit.”

I didn’t respond, and he gave me a look I couldn’t quite read before stepping back. “Just…be careful, okay?”

With that, he walked away, leaving me standing by my car, my thoughts spinning.

Billy

From across the lot, I watched Randy walk away from Yn, his movements hurried like he was afraid of something. My jaw clenched.

“What’s got you so serious?” Stu’s voice broke through my focus, his usual smirk in place.

“Randy,” I muttered, keeping my eyes on Yn as she climbed into her car. “He’s poking around too much. Talking to Yn now.”

Stu’s grin faltered, his hands twitching at his sides. “You think he’s onto something?”

I shook my head, my lips pressing into a thin line. “Not yet. But if he keeps running his mouth…”

Stu’s grin returned, though it was strained. “Don’t worry. We’ll handle him. Randy’s just playing detective, like he always does. He’ll trip himself up eventually.”

“Yeah,” I muttered, but the tension in my chest didn’t ease. Yn was getting too close to the edge, asking questions and hearing things she wasn’t supposed to. And Randy? He was digging his own grave.

When I got home, the house was quiet, almost too quiet. Billy’s car was already in the driveway, but there was no sign of him inside. I dropped my bag by the stairs, my mind replaying the events of the day.

The whispers at school, Randy’s warning, Billy’s unnerving calm. It was all adding up to something, but I didn’t know what.

“Yn,” Billy’s voice called out, making me jump.
