Billy

The door slammed shut behind me, cutting off the roar of the storm outside. My hair was soaked, rain dripping down my face and neck, but I barely noticed. My pulse was pounding, my muscles tight with frustration. That voice...that shadow in the woods—it was all I could think about.

“Stu,” I barked, my tone sharp enough to snap him out of whatever thoughtless grin he was wearing. I motioned toward the kitchen, throwing a glance at Yn wrapped in the blanket on the couch. “Come here. Now.”

Stu’s face shifted, a flicker of concern breaking through his usual carefree expression. He followed me into the kitchen, his sneakers squeaking against the floor.

“What’s up, man?” he asked, his voice low but tinged with unease.

I leaned against the counter, gripping the edge so tightly my knuckles went white. The anger was bubbling up, threatening to boil over, but I forced it down. I couldn’t afford to lose it, not now. Not in front of Yn.

“He was out there,” I hissed, my voice barely above a whisper.

Stu blinked. “Who?”

“The guy who chased her,” I snapped. “The coward. He was in the woods, watching us. Watching her.”

Stu’s grin faltered completely, replaced by a seriousness that was rare for him. “What did he say?”

I hesitated, glancing toward the living room to make sure Yn wasn’t paying attention. She was still curled up on the couch, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, her wide eyes fixed on the TV but not really seeing it. She looked so small, so fragile.

I turned back to Stu, lowering my voice even more. “He said he knows what we did.”

Stu stiffened, his eyes darting toward the living room as if the words might echo loud enough for Yn to hear. “What do you mean, what we did?”

“What the hell do you think I mean?” I growled. “Casey. Steve. Maureen Prescott. He brought up Sidney’s mom, Stu. He knows too much.”

Stu ran a hand through his damp hair, his nervous energy spilling over. “Okay, okay. But, like, how? No one knows, man. We were careful.”

“Apparently not careful enough,” I muttered, pushing off the counter and pacing the length of the kitchen. My gaze flicked back to Yn, and my stomach twisted. She didn’t deserve to be pulled into this mess. Not her.

Stu cleared his throat, pulling me back to the present. “So, what do we do? If he knows, we gotta handle it. Fast.”

I stopped pacing, turning to face him. “We push Sidney aside for now.”

Stu blinked, taken aback. “What?”

“You heard me,” I said firmly. “We’ll deal with Sidney later. Right now, we need to find out who this guy is and shut him up before he screws everything up. If he’s trying to pin this on us, we can’t afford any mistakes.”

Stu hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. “Man, we’ve been planning this for months. Sidney deserves what’s coming to her. Her mom tore your family apart. You’ve been waiting for this—”

“I know!” I snapped, slamming my fist against the counter. “I know what we planned. But Yn...”

Stu’s eyes followed mine as I glanced at the living room again. Yn had shifted, pulling the blanket tighter around her shoulders. Her face was pale, her eyes rimmed with exhaustion and fear. My stomach churned.

“She’s scared out of her mind,” I muttered, my voice softer now. “I can’t let this guy mess with her. She’s all I have left, Stu. She’s the only one who gives a damn about me. If something happens to her...”
