As the ground hit (m/n)'s feet, an overwhelming feeling of dread overcame him. He turned back to the bus only to see the door close and the engine start up, cutting off anything (m/n) was going to say. A sigh let his lips as the bus got further and further away, leaving (m/n) standing in the dirt of his new town. That's it.... No way of going back now especially with the broken bus here- (m/n) thought before turning his head. He was surprised to see someone standing in front of him that it snapped him quickly out of his thoughts. "Oh- Uh, h-hi?" (m/n) stuttered out as he attempted to swallow his beating heart, the lingering metallic taste in his mouth.
"Hello! You must be (m/n) correct?" The ginger-haired lady said as she extended her hand to (m/n), taking his into a firm handshake. (m/n) could feel each individual callous that littered her palm and fingers, signifying just how much of a dedicated worker she was. If (m/n) was honest, she intimidated him. "I'm Robin, the local carpenter of this little town. Mayor Lewis sent me to get ya and show you to your new home while he's tidying up for your arrival."
"Ah- Nice to meet you, Robin..." (m/n) said with a small, nervous smile as he shook Robin's hand. Wow she's strong.. She could easily break my hand if she wanted to right now... (m/n) secretly thought as he felt Robin's grip tighten around his hand before letting go of him.
"Now if you'll follow me, your farm's riiiiight over here," Robin said as she pointed to a path to her left. There was a small, wooden sign that's writing was too obscure to read but (m/n) guessed that at least one way it was pointing was talking about his new farm. As Robin started walking, (m/n) quickly followed, his feet slightly tangling themselves under the different ground. He let out a small curse under his breath as that happened, heat rising to his cheeks from embarrassment.
"So uhm, how's the townsfolk?" (m/n) asked as he walked besides Robin, his suitcases hitting his knees with every step making him hold them out a little more.
"They're all pretty nice! Oh you should come to my house sometime for dinner so you can meet my family! Sebby could use another friend.." Robin said with a sigh, leaving (m/n) to wonder who 'Sebby' was. "Oh and my daughter Maru and husband Demetrius would love to meet you as well! They're a bit sciency so they might ask you questions about the farm and soil levels. Just laugh and offer to bring some of it to them if they want to know. I barely know what they're talking about half the time haha!"
(m/n) laughed along, scared that if he didn't he'd be put on a stump and split in two. "Well I would love to meet them all.. Your daughter and husband seem like quite the pair! Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree huh?" (m/n) joked with a smile, hopefully keeping up the friendly atmosphere.
"That is very true! Sometimes I think they developed their own language... Oh well, as long as they have fun though right?" Robin replied with a grin. The grass was getting thicker by the step, vines from trees almost covering their path, and the roots buried deep into the ground seemingly uprooted to wrap around (m/n)'s feet, trying to keep him from entering the farm. A feeling of unease bloomed in (m/n)'s gut. What are you doing? This isn't us. We're not farmers. We belong in front of a computer, wasting away our life to make money that will barely cover the cost to live- "Oop- Watch your step, honey, there's some sneaky roots that are peeking out through the ground," Robin warned, snapping (m/n) out his thoughts. "Oh and don't worry! We're just about there."
(m/n) nodded at Robin's words, mumbling a small 'okay' before picking the pace up, wanting to lay in a bed already...
The path started to make way, the sun finally shining through the leaves while the two ventured further. (m/n) was already worried about how the farm looked if this was how the walkway was. But, sadly, that thought didn't stay a thought for long as the farm came into view.
If you could even call it a farm.
All the farmland had been overtaken by weeds and grass, trees were everywhere along with stray boulders that (m/n) had no clue how they got there. (m/n) stood there in shock, a wooden bin to the right of him that seemed to have freshly cut vines laying on the ground around it.
"Well, here we are, (m/n)! Your grandpa's farm..." Robin trailed off, taking in all the work that needed to be done. "It might.. Need a bit of work but underneath all these roots and weeds is some good soil. I still remember how rich the vegetables from this farm were when I was younger.. Your grandfather nurtured a good tomato! Gets my mouth salivating every time I think of them." Robin gave a small chuckle at the thought before walking over to the porch of what could only be described as a very run down cabin.
It seemed that the weather from all this time wore the poor wood down. Robin seemed to notice as well as she whispered under her breath, 'That's... Not good..'.Though before (m/n) could comment on the state of the house, asking if it was even safe to stay in there, a man came stumbling out of the cabin, holding onto his brown, worn out cap.
"Geez- I've never seen so much rot in a house-" He grumbled, dusting himself off before his eyes locked with (m/n)'s. His face, wrinkled with responsibility, gained a grin. "Ah, you must be (m/n)! I'm Lewis, mayor of Pelican Town." The man now known as Mayor Lewis stepped off the porch and took (m/n)'s hand into a handshake. What was with everyone grabbing (m/n)'s hand today? With a firm shake, Lewis let go to adjust his cap again. "Everyone's been asking about you! The town's all excited to have another farmer since your grandfather, bless his heart.."
That's right, (m/n) remembered in the note that grandpa had mentioned telling Lewis that he said hi... (m/n) wondered if they were friends back in the day.
(m/n) nervously smiled, the thought of everyone expecting an actual farmer created a pit in his stomach. Imagine how disappointed everyone will be when they're faced with you.(m/n) had to push down the thought.
"It's nice to meet you, Mayor Lewis! Grandpa mentioned you a couple times in the past, glad he had someone as reliable as you as a friend," (m/n) replied, lying straight through his teeth. Grandpa never mentioned Lewis, only that one time in his letter. And hell, (m/n) didn't even know if Lewis was a reliable guy!
"Oh that old charmer.. Always putting me in high regards!" Lewis said with an old laughter that reeked of a complex. "I'm surprised he never took you here more often.. Randomly he'd just show up with a small child! Stirred up the town gossip real nice i tell ya."
"I've been here before..?" (m/n) openly asked, surprised at this new revelation. He never remembered visiting this place. He was embarrassed.... All the commotion you brought to his peaceful life here caused him great stress.. It's your fault he got worse.. "He sure did! When he would show up with you, it was like he got a new pep in his step. He would walk you around town and along the river, but the place you liked the most was Marnie's Ranch.... Actually, I could've swore I've seen you playing with Shane when he would visit as a kiddo..." Lewis trailed out, his brows furrowing together as he tried to remember all those years back.
That was... nice to hear. Grandpa seemed to love taking (m/n) here.. (m/n) wished he could remember it....
"Ahem... So, back to the elephant in the room.... You can't stay in this house, (m/n)." Robin bluntly stated, motioning to the rot that was once a cabin. "I fear that the roof will cave in as you sleep, the windows don't seem.... Safe either." That was fair. The windows looked as if a small breeze would shatter them. But if (m/n) couldn't sleep there.... Then where?
