Picking up another stone I tossed it between my hands before skipping it across the lake, futilely trying to get it to the opposite shore. 'Why can't he just see that I'm not his helpless little girl anymore?' I skipped another stone. 'I mean, I've fought aliens, enhanced animals, various villains, even Sinestro for crying out loud!' Another stone. "And he thinks I'm not old enough to date? Or mature enough to know the difference between infatuation and love? I've got the freaking proof on my finger!"
"Proof of what?"
The sudden voice right behind me shocked me and I spun around, "whoa geez!" It took me a second to catch my breath, but once I did I sighed and silently prayed that lightning would strike either me or the person in front of me. "Hello Peter."
"Hey Sweet-cheeks."
"Don't call me that," I glared at him. "What are you doing here?"
"This is part of my run route," he explained. Looking him up and down I finally noticed the running clothes and shoes. "More important question is: what are you doing here?"
I just stared at him, not believing the sincerity in his voice. "And why would you care? Last time I saw you, you were trying to kiss me."
He tried to hide it behind a laugh but I caught his wince, "yeah, sorry about that. Kat gave me quite the talking to when I woke up. But I really gotta thank you." That surprised me. Enough that I couldn't say anything before he continued. "If you hadn't done that I wouldn't have gotten the message. I actually ran into a girl at school that genuinely likes me. We started dating three months ago, after I confessed to her."
".... Well congratulations Peter. I'm happy for you."
"Thanks. And I hear you're going out with that Grayson kid right?"
I nodded and smiled at the thought of my boyfriend. "Yeah, he gave me his answer that night actually."
"Good to know that right after you put my future children in jeopardy you got yourself a boyfriend."
I rolled my eyes and shook my head, "it just kinda happened like that."
"I know. I'm just teasing you. Well, see you around."
"Bye Peter." I waved as he ran off and smiled to myself. 'He looks happier now. Must be because of that girl he's dating.' I went back to skipping stones, this time with less ferocity.

I stepped through the door five minutes before midnight to see the living room light still on. 'Dad must have left it on again.' I plopped my keys in the dish and went to turn it off but saw Hal sitting on the couch with Carol right beside him; the both of them very much awake.
"Hey kiddo."
"Hi Carol. Hey Dad."
"Hey."
"Something the matter?"
"No. I just want to say I'm sorry. For what I said about you dating Dick. It's just hard watching you grow up. I know it's not an excuse, but to me some part of you will always be that little girl who wouldn't stop trying to climb my leg."
I let a small smile show at that and sat down beside him. "Dad, a part of me will always be that little girl. But at the same time I am growing up. I won't be your little kid daughter much longer but I'll always need you in my life, no matter what." I was barely keeping myself from crying at this point and I could tell Dad was too, so when he hugged me we devolved into a laughing/crying/hugging mess.
Several minutes later, once we had finally calmed down, Carol got us some water and we popped in a movie. They let me pick and I was feeling nostalgic so I picked Spy Kids. The CGI was kinda outdated but the storyline was good and we had a nice time; even though I fell asleep with only half an hour left.
