Chapter 8: Fight in Space

Shadow and Sonic were still throwing punches and kicks at each other when Shadow got the upper hand and teleported behind him once Sonic was vulnerable and kicked him with intense force knocking Sonic into some old structures as he laid there taking a breath. Dust covered the air as Shadow hovered staring down at him with disappointment.

"Why are you alone? Where are your friends?" He asked in a mocking manner gesturing to him as Sonic gritted his teeth. Shadow huffed in response "They tried to stop you, didn't they? But you came anyway. Your anger was too much." He scowled at him "What kind of hero abandons his friends to pursue revenge? Abandons his family!"

Sonic stood up feeling defensive "Don't you dare talk about my family." Shadow's glare hardened "And here I thought you cared for them. Especially the one.." he turned tilting his head "What's his name? Tom?" That was Sonic's last draw as he let out an angry howl launching forward giving him his most powerful punch straight in the jaw knocking Shadow far into space.

Shadow fell all the way onto the moon getting knocked down a few times landing on his back as he groaned, looking at his hand to see his power was gone. He gasped as Sonic flew in pining him to the ground by gripping his chest as he makes a fist. He could see the anger and frustration in his eyes.

Shadow called him out as he held onto him "Go ahead. Finish it!" Sonic felt himself straining harshly as he kept his fist up, shaking his head slightly. Shadow wanted this. He knew what he was in for from the very beginning and so did Y/n. They both wanted to see this to the end and Shadow was practically BEGGING for it to finally end.

"What are you waiting for? Do it!" He grunted seeming impatient as he pointed to his chest "I'm right here!" That right there made Sonic's facial expression change into that of regret and sadness. "This is not who I am.." he said while staring at his hands. He let him go as he walked over him seeing his power die down leaving Shadow confused.

He said up looking at Sonic "What are you doing? You won. Take your revenge." Sonic sighed while shaking his head as he muttered "There are no winners with revenge." Shadow widened his eyes after hearing this as he looked down for a few moments and then up at the stars as he hears their voices, both Maria's and Y/n's.

"Wow.."

"Look at all those stars.."

"They're like diamonds."

"Maybe..that's how life is. While the light shines its brightest and slowly fades...it'll always remember from where it came."

"The last time I sat beneath stars like this.." he lowered his head as his eyes closed for a moment feeling sadness in his broken heart "I was with Y/n...and her." His eyebrows furrowed with frustration "Me and Y/n felt this pain for so long." He looked backed up holding a sorrowful gaze "It's all we know."

Sonic spoke softly "When I lost Longclaw..I felt the same way." Shadow turned his head slightly as he whispered "Did your pain eventually go away?" Sonic shook his head in remorse "No. But in time I learned there's something even more powerful than pain. The love we felt for each other."

He turned to Shadow giving him a sad smile "Like the love you and Y/n share." Shadow's face turned to that of surprise and shock as Sonic chuckled "I see the way you two look at each other. With a love that powerful and that strong, it'll always make you want to do anything for them. Regardless if they're there or not."

Shadow stared down contemplating what he said as he looks back to all those memories he had with you. All the times ya'll shared playing, dancing, and gazing up at the stars. He always thought it was just a really strong bond that formed between you two because of Maria, but in actuality...he now knows it became something more.

He felt his cheeks become warm as he now realizes his feelings for you. They weren't just out of sympathy when Maria introduced her to him , or the fact that they were the only two hedgehogs at the time. He had grown to know you, to become your friend, but unlike with Maria he always felt something more coming from inside of him whenever you were near.

He also had a realization as he shut his eyes in regretfulness. He couldn't believe he wanted to kill himself, but you were no better. You also craved it just as much as he did. But now he had a reason to live, to keep on going, to fight for this world, to make Maria proud. And the reason was you.

It had always been you.

"That's what you need to hold on to, Shadow. Maria might be gone, but your love will always remain with you two." Sonic smiled as Shadow notices a light shine on him as they both looked up to see the sun slowly coming out behind the earth.  Shadow stared in amazement as he whispered "The light shines even though the star is gone."

They soon hear the cannon rumbling in the distance bringing them back to reality. Shadow shook his head "This whole mess is our fault. We've been so blinded by rage, I thought..we had no choice." He then turned to see Sonic lending him his hand as he spoke calmly "You always have a choice."

Once he helped him up Sonic grinned "But making the right one is never easy. One more thing I learned is that when you really screw something up, you can't fix it on your own." Shadow formed a small smirk as the two locked hands making their super forms appear once more as they prepared themselves for one heck of a fight.

Sonic, being the charismatic guy he is, said his line "Gotta go fast." Shadow turned to him looking surprised "Don't tell me you got a catchphrase." Sonic beamed nodding his head proudly "That's right, new hedgehog. And everyone loves it." They took off from the moon into the air as they began heading towards the eclipse cannon.

Shadow took a deep breath as he had a new mission in his heart.

"Y/n...I'm coming!"
