"She's... in remission."
The doctor blinks, absolutely dumbfounded. It must come as a massive shock, considering that scarcely a few days ago, Fushiguro was a late-stage cancer patient, ready to be admitted to the hospital. Perhaps he thinks there's something wrong with his equipment. Or maybe he thinks he messed up the blood samples somehow.
"Fushiguro, I wasn't able to find any trace of cancer cells in your body," the doctor mumbles with a look of disbelief. "It's actually the opposite. This last round of tests indicate that your liver is healthier than ever. Practically perfect."
You do your best to hide the grin spreading across your lips. Well, that's certainly something. Not only did you cure her cancer-even if the approach was a bit unconventional-but you regenerated her liver so flawlessly that she's now healthy as a horse. She's actually healthier after cancer than she was before. Which sounds absurd, and yet, it's the truth.
To be honest, you weren't sure if it would work. You feared that you would botch the job somehow. It was a risky gamble, but Fushiguro was dying, and it didn't seem like you had any options left. That being said, it definitely wasn't easy. Your plan hinged on your ability to use reverse cursed technique with the utmost speed and precision. If you'd been just a split second late, or failed to heal the right part of her body, she would have died right then and there.
But it worked. Fushiguro is still alive. Megumi will actually have a mother this time. And Toji won't have to say goodbye to the woman he loves.
You're so glad you never gave up on her.
"Just so that we're clear, you're in complete remission," the doctor explains. "There are no longer any signs or symptoms of cancer, but the cancer could still very well be inside your body. We're just no longer able to discern it. It is possible for cancer to reappear, along with similar symptoms that you've already experienced. We cannot confidently say that you've been cured. Even after years of remission, we never know what might happen. And since your cancer disappeared so abruptly-miraculously, I'd even say-it's entirely possible that it could come back. I just need you to be aware of this."
"I understand," Fushiguro nods, but despite what she just heard, she's smiling. The doctor must think it's rather strange. This whole situation is strange to begin with. He clearly can't wrap his head around it.
But who is he to question a miracle? And without a doubt, a miracle has occurred.
Provided you have Satoru's help, you'll break down and reconstruct Fushiguro's body as many times as it takes. She knows this too. She knows you're the one who saved her. She even woke up a few times screaming in the middle of the treatment, and although she wasn't exactly lucid because of the drugs you gave her, for a few brief moments, her hazy eyes met yours, and they seemed to fill with realization.
She isn't afraid anymore, and you aren't either. Your abilities are beyond what you could ever have imagined. You set out to save as many people as you possibly can, and it feels like you actually have a good chance of making that happen.
Right now, you're just really, really happy.
Spirits high, you walk out of the room, along with Fushiguro and Toji. Satoru is waiting in the hallway, next to baby Megumi in a stroller. Satoru occasionally pinches Megumi's nose and squishes his pudgy little cheeks while chuckling inwardly. Needless to say, Megumi doesn't look particularly impressed. But then again, that's nothing new.
"Mama!" Megumi suddenly exclaims, bouncing in place excitedly. "Mama, dada!"
He turns towards the three of you and starts clapping his hands, giggling all the while. Fushiguro smiles warmly before picking him up in her arms, and Toji moves closer so that he can press a kiss to his son's forehead. The three of them look so perfect together. It should always have been like this. They should never have been separated, but alas, the world is cruel.
