Trying to move quickly, and avoid the wrath of its flailing arm, I quickly jabbed my sword at the weak spot and the machine collapsed, gears and metal parts flying everywhere, squash head smashing on the ground.
"Sorry I had to destroy your machine, Varian. It was a really good idea." I said, helping Varian off the ground.
"N-no that's okay, I'm just glad it didn't take my head off." Varian sighed, shaking his head.
"Wanna feed the ducks like we planned to?" I asked.
"Yes!" Varian exclaimed, "I'll go get the animal feed!"
Varian and I went down to the pond again, weaving through the corn field like we had before. The ducks were down at the pond, and very pleased at the free food. The two of us enjoyed ourselves by the edge of the pond, when the ducks eventually flew off.
After a minute of silence I felt Varian sigh beside me.
"Are you okay?" I asked, leaning towards him.
"Yeah." Varian mumbled.
I stared at him for a moment, "Varian, I've known you long enough to tell when you're upset." I rested a hand on his shoulder.
He was quiet for a second before he spoke, "Sometimes... I feel like everything I do is wrong."
"Aw, Varian, I know your sparring dummy went a little crazy earlier but it's okay now." I replied.
"But it's not just that. It's like every experiment or invention goes wrong. What's the point in trying if everything turns out to be a failure." Varian placed his head in his hands.
"Every great mind faces many failures." I explained, "My blacksmith friend in the city tells me stories about Coronas greatest engineer, Demanitus. Each one of his successes came with ten failures before it, but despite that he still managed to do amazing things. He reminds me a lot of you." I smiled.
"Really?" Varian asked.
"Yep." I replied, "And you've got tons more ideas to try, they might just have to come with a few explosions or flying arms."
Varian laughed and looked back towards me, "You're a good friend, Sabrine."
"I try." I shrugged.
I then stood up and lifted a stone from the ground, "I bet I can skip this rock further than you." I challenged, tossing the stone.
"No way!" Varian protested, picking up a different stone and tossing it after mine.
The two of us dissolved into a fit of laughter, taking turns throwing stones, till Varian reached for another stone and winced.
"Ow!" He exclaimed, pulling his hand up to reveal a scratch which had begun to bleed, "Oh no." His eyes widened.
I immediately sat Varian down, knowing that blood makes him lightheaded, and got a few medicinal tools out from my bag.
"Jeez that thing was sharp." I shook my head, cleaning up Varians cut.
"Ohhh no..." Varian covered his eyes and turned away.
"It's not that bad, I promise." I said, putting some ointment on the cut and wrapping his hand with a bandage.
"There. All done." I noted, watching Varian finally uncover his eyes.
"Whew. You have a real medicinal talent, Sabrine. Sure you don't have any magic powers?" Varian asked, playfully.
"Nope, just a firm knowledge of herbs. And even if I did you wouldn't believe me." I laughed, elbowing Varians arm.
